Treatment Methods Of Mesothelioma

Treatment methods of mesothelioma diverge due to a number of factors, such as the location of the cancer cell, the stage of the disease, and a patient's personal choices. In general, traditional mesothelioma treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy Mesothelioma Treatment

Brachytherapy Treatment

Traditional mesothelioma treatments are the standard treatments for malignant mesothelioma, which is a cancerous disease affecting the mesothelial cells in mesothelioma diverge .

Standard treatment options include surgery (the aim of which is to remove the cancerous mesothelioma cells), radiation therapy (to eliminate the mesothelioma cells), immune augmentative therapy (which aims to restore the body's natural immune system to a level in which it can be effective in helping to fight the effects of mesothelioma cancer), and chemotherapy (which aims to kill cancer cells throughout the body). Sometimes, these treatments are combined.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells while radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Although mesothelioma treatment methods have been proven to prolong patients' lives, they cannot cure the disease. Ongoing clinical trials are dedicated to overcoming this debilitating illness. Current experimental treatments include the following:Drug Therapy.

The third standard malignant mesothelioma treatment is Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy uses drugs which target cancer cells and stop them from dividing, thus preventing their growth. In systemic chemotherapy, the drug can be taken by mouth or injected, but either way the goal is to have it reach cancer cells by means of the body's own blood circulation system. In regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly onto the target area. And finally, combination chemotherapy involves the use of two or more anticancer drugs which can be administered either orally or through injection. Malignant mesothelioma is a difficult disease for anyone to bear. However, educating oneself as to the options available is an important step for making the process more manageable.

Brachytherapy is considerably new in comparison to external radiation, and some patients feel more inclined to opt for treatment options that are time tested, although brachytherapy has had few complications since its inception. Brachytherapy has had about the same number of complications as external radiation, mainly a risk of infection or a risk of a required secondary placement. This is no more complicated than the ill effects of external radiation treatments. External radiation treatments require the patient to go to a cancer center or hospital for their mesothelioma treatments. Brachytherapy treatments do not require chronic radiation treatments, although they do require regular monitoring.

Using special drugs and light to destroy malignant cells during surgical procedures is how an innovative tactic for fighting mesothelioma called intra-operative photodynamic therapy. The drug increases cancer cells' light sensitivity and is administered intravenously several days before surgery. While surgically removing of the tumor, light-pulse radiation is done, destroying the now-vulnerable cancer cells. This mesothelioma treatment is being researched extensively for further improvement.

Chemotherapy mesothelioma treatment is the use of anticancer drugs to kill mesothelioma cancer cells throughout the body. Most drugs used to treat mesothelioma are given by injection into a vein (intravenous, or IV). Doctors studying malignant mesothelioma research are studying the effectiveness of putting chemotherapy directly into the chest or abdomen (intracavitary chemotherapy). To relieve symptoms and control pain, the doctor may use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the chest or abdomen. The procedure for removing fluid from the chest is called thoracentesis. Removal of fluid from the abdomen is called paracentesis. Drugs may be given through a tube in the chest to prevent more fluid from accumulating. Radiation therapy and surgery may also be helpful in relieving symptoms.

Even though chemotherapy can cause unpleasant side effects, some people still manage to lead normal lives. Sometimes chemotherapy can actually make you feel better by alleviating the effects of the cancer. Unfortunately, the drugs can affect normal cells as well as malignant mesothelioma tissue. This can cause many unpleasant side effects. Not all chemotherapy drugs cause the same side effects, however, and some people may have very few. Cancer treatments produce different reactions in different people. Reactions also vary from treatment to treatment. It should be remembered that nearly all side effects are only temporary and will disappear once treatment has stopped.

Body parts that may be affected by chemotherapy in malignant mesothelioma treatment are those whose normal cells rapidly divide and grow. These areas are the mouth, digestive system, skin, hair, and bone marrow. The physician / surgeon will decide on which type of mesothelioma treatment to choose from. This will depend on what type of mesothelioma it is, the patients age and health, and most importantly at what stage the cancer has been diagnosed.

Early detection of pleural mesothelioma can improve a patient's prognosis considerably, and such patients have more extensive treatment options. If the disease is diagnosed early enough, surgery to remove localized tumors, followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells, can be an effective treatment. Curative surgery candidates must be in a good general state of health, and their cancer must not have spread beyond localized sections of the lungs.

Pleural mesothelioma patients who are not diagnosed early enough for curative treatment have fewer treatment options, and these are mostly limited to palliative treatments. These types of treatments are designed to relive pain and discomfort to improve a patient's quality of life, rather than to improve their prognosis. Palliative treatments include removal of built-up fluid from the pleural spaces, and surgical removal of tumors, to relieve pressure on the lungs.

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, further tests will be conducted to find out if the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body, and to what extent. The stage of the cancer must be known for suitable treatment to be started.Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are standard for all types of malignant mesothelioma. Treatment is often focused on reducing symptoms (palliative therapy) and giving the patient more time, rather than getting rid of the cancer and going into remission (curative therapy). This is because mortality is high despite treatment; it is often not caught until at an advanced stage; the cancerous cells are often very spread out; and because patients are often too weak for extensive treatment.

Malignant mesothelioma is a terminal form of cancer that arises primarily in the lining of the lungs and the abdomen; it is caused by the inhalation of asbestos. Generally speaking, mesothelioma takes at least fifteen years for symptoms to manifest themselves after a person's initial contact with asbestos. Even if a person is only exposed to asbestos for a short period of time, it is possible for them to develop mesothelioma in later life. Because asbestos fibers are microscopic, exposure can occur without an individual being aware of it.

Using drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be given to patients who are not surgical candidates. Chemotherapy alone cannot cure mesothelioma but can prolong life. Chemotherapy may be taken by pill, or it may be put into the body by a needle in the vein or muscle. Chemotherapy is called a systemic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells throughout the body.Mesothelioma is a particularly destructive cancer, for decades pass between exposure to the asbestos and appearance of cancerous symptoms. Further complicating mesothelioma treatment is the malignant nature of the cancer, for once symptoms surface, current therapeutic treatments are usually no longer effective and post-diagnosis survival rates typically range from four months to a year.

Mesothelioma treatment is either designed to treat the immediate area of the primary mesothelioma growth or the whole body. Whole body treatments are called systemic treatments. Localised treatments include surgery and radiotherapy. Systemic treatments act on cancer cells no matter where they may be in the body and include chemotherapy.

Other clinical trials are also ongoing and patients who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply for the trials. New tests and treatments are constantly being researched and developed. As with all cases of mesothelioma, time is of the essence. If you or a loved one has this disease then seek immediate medical help and seek immediate legal help from an asbestos lawyer as well. It's important to contact a personal injury lawyer who specializes in mesothelioma lawsuits as many times insurance will not cover the overwhelming medical costs. In order for the surviving family to not have to face potential bankruptcy or other financial hardship, seeking out an asbestos lawyer now may save much anguish later.

A clinical trial is one of the final stages of a long and careful disease research stage. Studies are done with cancers patients to find out whether promising approaches to cancers for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are trustworthy.

New Wikipedia

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart,Ashrafian H, Athanasiou T, Yap J, DeSouza AC. Two-chamber intracardiac mesothelioma. Asian Cardiovasc Thorac Ann. 2005 Jun;13(2):184-6. the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis.

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking, but smoking greatly increases risk of other asbestos-induced cancer. Compensation via asbestos funds or lawsuits is an important issue in mesothelioma (see asbestos and the law).

The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. The diagnosis may be suspected with chest X-ray and CT scan, and is confirmed with a biopsy (tissue sample) and microscopic examination. A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to take biopsies. It allows the introduction of substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (called pleurodesis), which prevents more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, the disease carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.

This is really a bad cancer. The thing is there was plenty of warning. They new about the dangers and continued to work with asbestos because it was such a good product. I have a blog on this subject. I'm not selling anything . Just quality information. Check it out:
