It's all in the History

You can tell a lot from a town by it's history.  What history does is give the town its character, its flavor and its identity.  I have talked about Mesquite before in modern terms.  Now, I'm going to give you insight into the heart of this city.  I think  you'll be surprised and pleased, that there is such a city in Nevada.  One that doesn't have all the crime and challenges of the other big city (and you know which one I'm talking about).  So, come with me now, and lets go back into the history of Mesquite, and when we're done, I bet you will have fallen in Love all over again!

Founding!

Older than you think!

It took three attempts to get Mesquite as a settlement that would stick. However, the original habitation credit goes to the Mormons had it. Thats right, Mesquite Nevada was originally founded by Mormon pioneers. While they were the major influences, there was also a Spanish trail that ran through the town. Mesquite had trouble staying afloat because of the Virgin River and its tendency to flood. Don't worry about that now, flooding ocured in the 1880's. Others came and went and in 1894 a permanent group of 6 families came were able to make a go of it. It was this group of families that were able to solve the flooding problem, by building an irrigation canal.

This quaint little town specialized in growing raisins and agricultural items like eggs and milk and Dairies. With these, the community was able to ground itself and take solid root. With the development and commonality of the car, Mesquite grew even more brining in campground and motels.

The biggest boost to the city came in the 1970's when I-15 was completed. It continues to grow as people find this delicious hide-a-way and I suspect will continue to grow.

Whats true and whats false!

about the surrounding areas!

There are two really big myths are well are myths that I'll tell you about. The first is the rumor about workers being buried in Hoover Dam. It was built in the 1930 and rumor has it that workers fell into the construction work and were then covered with concrete. NOT TRUE. While there were many that died (96 to be exact), none of them were burried in concrete. Why, because the concrete was poured in small section, consequently if someone feel, slipped or in some other way landed in the concrete, they were able to get up just like workeres do today.

Second Major Myth is to way nevda actually became a state. Most think and teach that it was to help the civil war by getting the gold and silver that were in them there hills. This is not accurate. The truth is that it was a federal territory and part of the union. President Lincoln appointed one James Nye as Governor. Where the myth gets its roots is from the federal government bought a great about of the Gold and Silver that Nevada had. When this occured, Nevada was created as a territory on March 2, 1861 by Congress. The full purpose was so that so that it's finances would help the Union and NOT the Confederates. Ironically, Congress didn't approve the assistance (Enaling Acting) until March 21, 1864 which was to late for most any help, since the war was all but over.
