Messenger bags have become an urban fashion icon for men over the past few years. Once used by bike messengers, the messenger bag is now the coolest way to carry your gear. Whether you are commuting to work, hitting the gym, or even taking a trip, the men's messenger bag is a great choice. In this article I'll tell you when and why a messenger bag is the right choice, and go through a few of my favorite brands.

I like messenger bags because they are usually very simple and have one large pocket, rather than many little ones. The single large pocket makes it easier to fit big items and arrange them how you want them. It also makes it easier to find things, because there is really only one place to look. The single strap of a messenger bag makes it super convenient to flip around off your back and access they bag. This is the major drawback of the standard backpack and why I always turn to the messenger bag as long as I am not hauling a ton of gear over a long distance.

One obvious reason is that these bags are stylish and can actually be an accessory for guys that is functional and looks sharp at the same time. Many trendy brands have emerged over the passed few years that offer hip messenger bags for men. They come in many different sizes and can be used for nearly everything. I have a Chrome Citizen Messenger bag and I have used it for almost everything. It can hold my laptop, gym cloths, sneakers, and a couple books with no issues. They are a great as an overnight bag. I've even brought nothing more than my Chrome Bag on a 2 week trip to Nicaragua. They are great because they are tough and they look cool. They come with their signature seat-belt buckle on the front that makes them really easy to take off and put back on. They also come with extra stabilizing straps that are perfect if you are on a long bike ride.

Canvas Messenger Bags

Canvas is pretty much the standard material for messenger bags. It can also be made to look formal enough for work. Canvas is also pretty tough and durable, but if you get a light color, it will get dirty really quickly. Stick with darker colors if you are the type who messes things up quickly (like me). Jack Spade and Brooklyn Industries both make great messenger bags for men. They are cool and casual enough to run around with on the weekend to a coffee shop, and nice enough to bring to work.

Going with leather is a great choice if you want something that is a little more formal. Leather is usually pricier, but with that price tag comes durability. Leather bags can last a very, very long time. Like leather jackets, leather bags for men age well and often look better with a few scratches here and there. In fact, you might be able to score a vintage leather messenger bag on ebay.
