With accomplishment you've earned a tryster.
As a token of immense appreciation expressed,
A squid angel leaves this lens heartily blessed.
On a rendering that is sparkling in its own right,
    Propagating an appealing thought well and quite;

and appreciate it more than mere words can express.
May your gracious blessings come back to you tenfold
for your kindness gives joy that warms even the cold!

Any suggestions as to where to begin/introductory material with/for this exciting Art media/form?

  • MSchindel Jan 29, 2012 @ 6:03 pm | delete
Thanks so much for the lovely compliment! I'm delighted to have been able to introduce you to metal clay. One caveat - fine silver metal clay (by far the easiest to work with) is VERY expensive, and the base metal clays (which are much cheaper) have special firing requirements and are much more finicky about the conditions in which they will sinter. With that disclaimer, I recommend you take a look at my lens at http://www.squidoo.com/preciousmetalclay, which includes books, DVDs, etc. I recommend (I've indicated which ones are best for "metal clay newbies") and my lens on the original formula of BRONZclay at http://www.squidoo.com/bronzclay, which will give you an idea of what's involved in firing base metal clays (although there are newer formulas that don't take as long to fire). I hope this is helpful!

I never thought of doing this, but I love the idea and it seems like it would be pretty easy! I have a ton of stampers from scrapbooking. I really want to try this.
  • MSchindel Jan 28, 2012 @ 10:41 am | delete
Thanks for your comment! You're lucky to have a large collection of rubber stamps already. (Make sure to clean them thoroughly before you use them to texture metal clay.) Sounds like you're a natural for this material! :)

This is a wonderful and very informative lens! I tried working with some metal clay - bronze - but had a little trouble getting the hang of it. Maybe it's time to give it another shot...
  • MSchindel Jan 27, 2012 @ 4:32 pm | delete
Thanks for the lovely compliment! Base metal clays (including bronze clay) have more complex firing requirements than fine silver clay, and they're also far less tolerant about the conditions in which they will sinter properly. You might want to take a look at my lens about Original BRONZclay at www.squidoo.com/bronzclay for some tips. :)

  • jimmyworldstar Jan 25, 2012 @ 1:14 pm | delete
These are awesome designs, you get a great texture from using metal objects because it's less likely to shift in the clay or break off like plastic.
  • MSchindel Jan 25, 2012 @ 4:14 pm | delete
Thanks for the compliment! I agree, metal objects make great textures. But with metal clay you don't need to use a lot of pressure to get a great impression, so plastic (or fabric or natural) textures work great, too. Have fun with your designs! :)

  • KarenTBTEN Jan 23, 2012 @ 8:48 pm | delete
That does look tempting. I think metal clay could be handy for a lot besides jewelry -- like miniatures.
  • MSchindel Jan 23, 2012 @ 9:07 pm | delete
Hi Karen, thank you so much for blessing this lens! You're absolutely right that making jewelry is not the only use for metal clay (although it is the most prevalent because the material is too expensive to use for most craft purposes). It definitely can be used to make miniature silverware, pitchers, furniture knobs, tiny combs/brushes/mirrors for a dressing table, etc.

Another option for non-jewelry applications is to use base metal clays (copper, bronze, steel, etc.), which are much less expensive than precious metal clays but have much more demanding and temperamental firing requirements. Fine silver clay is extremely forgiving and fairly easy to fire and sinter successfully. The new sterling silver clay is fired similarly to base metal clays, although it tends to be a bit less finicky about sintering conditions. Hope this information is helpful, and thanks again for your kind feedback and your blessing!

  • Mandy Aug 23, 2011 @ 4:07 pm | delete
Hi, this information was so helpful! I just have a question... In the image associated with the "make your own one of a kind textures" section, what kind of medium is used to create the flower on the green block and also the designs on the light green (olive,it appears) block? It's a little hard to tell what goes with what in the picture and with the descriptions below it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!
  • MSchindel Aug 23, 2011 @ 6:14 pm | delete
Hi Mandy! I'm delighted you found this information helpful. Both the green textures you are asking about are slabs of Premo polymer clay that have been cured (baked) according to the manufacturer's directions and carved with Dockyard brand micro carving tools (v-gouges and u-gouges).

Fantastic! How do you take an image, such as a childs drawing, and etch it onto a PMC piece?
  • MSchindel Jun 15, 2011 @ 9:20 pm | delete
Hi Rebecca! Thanks very much for your feedback. My suggestion would be to scan the artwork into a digital file and use image editing software to convert it to pure black and white (no gray) and simplify the lines, if necessary, to remove any very fine lines. Then you can invert it using the same software (so the areas that are black become white and vice versa) and print it onto overhead transparency film so you can use it to create a photopolymer plate. There are links in this lens to several tutorials on making photopolymer plates (PPPs) from black and white artwork. I hope this helps!
