Metallica Videos and Album Information

Metallica has become one of the most influential heavy metal bands, and is credited as one of the "big four" of thrash metal, along with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. The band has sold more than 90 million records worldwide, including 57 million in the United States, which makes Metallica the most commercially successful thrash metal band.

The writers of The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll felt Metallica gave heavy metal "a much-needed charge". Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Greg Prato of All Music Guide said Metallica, "expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions", calling the band "easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth."

"Enter Sandman" Video

Featured as the opening track and lead single from their enormous 1991 album Metallica

The song was produced by Bob Rock, and the music was written by Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and James Hetfield. Vocalist and guitarist Hetfield wrote the lyrics, which deal with nightmares.

The single achieved gold certification for more than 500,000 copies shipped in the United States, spurring sales of over 15 million copies for Metallica and propelling Metallica to worldwide popularity. Acclaimed by critics, the song is featured in all of Metallica's live albums and DVDs released after 1991 and has been played live at award ceremonies and benefit concerts. During some live performances, after James Hetfield sings "Exit light" he'll ask the crowd to sometimes either "Sing it" or "What is it?" which the crowd will answer in unison "Enter night". This is probably the song that most crowds can get into as is "Master of Puppets" where similar moments will occur where James will not sing part of the lyrics and let the crowd sing them.

Kill Em All

Amazon Price: $13.05 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

While not as timeless as Ride the Lightning or Master Puppets, Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is still a fine piece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre.

Metallica: and Justice for All Spotlight

...And Justice For All

Amazon Price: $11.97 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting.

Dude, Awesome lens. I have loved these guys since first hearing Master of Puppets back in ?'86? '85? Not sure, doesn't matter but they have been awesome ever since. The frat boy following got a bit old,. but they never changed. Favorite tune, Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). Cliff Burton had to be one of the best bassists of all time. I can still remember listening to KNAC when they announced the bus crash. Still brings tears to me eyes. I'll smoke one for you tonight Cliff. Thanks for the awesome Lens.

Ah Thomas -- isn't it absolutely amazing when one considers the longevity of some groups such as Metallica. What an awesome name too! To think they formed in 1981 -- do you realize JUST how long ago that really is and to think I'm reading a great tribute lens such as yours. It is something to say the least. Rock on ...
