Metallica vs. Megadeth
Ranked #920 in Music, #27,216 overall
Who is the Better Band? Megadeth or Metallica?
The feud has raged on and off between both bands for decades, whether either band would like to admit it or not. What makes these bands so great?
They're both exceptional, if not the best, thrash bands in existence. Metallica has a huge worldwide following, huge hits, radio airplay and great songs. Some would argue that their best songs are in their early catalog, and they've made a large departure from what made them famous -- thrash metal.
Megadeth also has a huge following, however, obviously not as large as Metallica's fanbase. Megadeth bandmates have come and gone, however the sound of Megadeth has mostly stayed the same (except for a brief experimentation on Cryptic Writings and Risk). While some say that Megadeth songs are more listenable and stand the test of time, a vast of majority people favor Metallica.

One more thing: the new Dave Mustaine autobiography has been released (I'm in the process of reading it). If you'd like to learn more about the book, read my page on the book here:

For me both bands are awesome. But when I listen to Metallica, I always get bored after a while and need a break of them while Megadeth is always on my Ipod and I am listening a lot to them. I play the guitar for nearly 19 years now and have to say there are quite challenging things in both bands, but the solos of Kirk don`t appear so challenging to me as megadeth do. I mean I have never learned them all, no need for, I am not in the band :). The rythm guitar parts in both bands are outstanding, but you really have to concentrate more to play the rythm parts of megadeth, because they have a more complex structure. And Dave is singing to them, yeah his singing thats my only point of critique for Megadeth, I agree that his singing isn`t that amazing, they would sound a lot better when a guy like James (who isn`t the greatest singer himself, but I like his voice more) would sing. Actually I am glad, that Dave has been kicked out of the band, cause Megadeth never would have been founded and his skills wouldn`t have been appreciated so much, I guess.
Some of the posts here are saying, that half of the songs of Kill Em All just have been co written by Mustaine. I don`t think so, I mean James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are always announced as the main writers in all Metallica songs, but when you look at songs like Call of Ktulu or Orion (one of the most genius songs I know for sure) you can be sure they just did a little part there. And there are a lot of characteristics to hear of Megadeth in Metallicas early songs like Call Of Ktulu or stuff from Kill Em All. Jump In The Fire is a very Mustaineish sounding song, and its on my top 10 list of Metallicas songs for sure, Metallica also for sure became an issue in the metal scene because of Daves riffs and they have never thanked him for it, at least not in public. They for sure all know that without him, the band wouldn`t have had such a great album like Kill Em All and the most outstanding musician of all of the two bands Cliff Burton maybe even wouldn`t have joined them. I mean if you are listening to the songs of Kill Em All which are mostly made by James in his early life, you will mention that those are great songs but not as outstanding as the songs Dave "Co - Wrote". I think it is a pity that Dave wasn`t invited to join the Hall Of Fame, he played such an important role in the early days and the developing of Metallica. But I don`t really know what has happened behind the media, maybe they wanted him to join and he rejected, because he just wants to get there with his own band. What I don`t like from both bands is that they are trying to go back to the roots I mean people are changing and music has something to do with feelings both bands don`t have this young issues anymore to make this fresh sounding style of playing anymore, they developed as humans, as musicians as, personalities you can`t hide that and you should stand for it. Okay St. Anger was really shit, but I think nearly everybody of us has seen the movie, so you can see why. But I think Risk is really underated it has a very good songstructure and doesn`t appear to me like an album just made because we are working on one right now, its more like that the band wanted to go further with their music and exhibit it, the album appears to me more musically opened. Load and Reload are very good albums for me as well, maybe not thrash metal anymore but I really like the songs on them and I think it shows their development as well. My last words are I really appreciate that you guys of both bands have been out there or are out there and have let me enjoyed life even more. How would have my world been without you? Thank You!!!!!!

I'm a bassist, so the band I choose HAS to have an epic bass player, and that bass player is DAVE ELLEFSON of MEGADETH. While Metallica has been through several bass players, none of them really tickled my interest the way Dave jr has. I consider him one of the best bassists in the world, right up there with Steve Harris of Maiden. Also, I'm gonna just put more emphasis on what most people on the Megadeth side have already said: Megadeth has the faster, heavier, more brutal and technically flawless music. You can listen to it over and over and it will never get boring. I started out as a huge Metallica fan, but came to see the truth. I'm not against Metallica... until Megadeth is under attack. Then I will defend to the death.

Metallica's best album was Kill Them All, that goes without saying. If it had not been for Dave Mustaine's contribution in the early days of Metallica, they would never have grown into the band that switched to a more pop version of metal later. Dave Mustaine made both Metallica and Megadeth rise from their infancies into both great bands. Since Megadeth is Dave Mustaine, I have to go with Megadeth as the greater band.
Plus Lars Ulrich is an a&& for his attacks on Napster and other early forms of music sharing. Particularly since most people would never had heard of Metallica if they had not been recording them off the college heavy metal radio on audio cassette's and sharing with their friends. Ironic, isnt it!

Megadeath is the one in the book. Their destiny is to become legendary throughout heavy metal history. They are like one of the founders of metal music. On a personal note symphony of destruction is a special song I shared with my father when he was in this world. I rock out with when was little. He was a metal head and that song remains to be one of the most coolest songs ever made. I love the gutairs solos by Dave. My mother had a crush on him because he's a red head. There songs are still great and can't be replace thank god. If the band reads this. Thank You.

Mister Vanilla Milkshake says:
I've seen plenty of Megadeth's live shows, and truth be told, I barely saw any mistakes. The guitar was perfection, the solos were amazing and blew me away, the drums. Well, the snare drum could've used some work, but other than that, it was absolutely amazing. That, and their songs are just the same. They blend the perfect mix of riffs and solos on the guitar to make it sound so smooth. The drums give it a nice beat and sometimes, an amazing background riff. And the bass, oh my, was wonderful. The fact that they could actually use their bassist in such a way, that I have seen not many other bands do(Peace Sells... but who's buying riff. And I think it was Lucreatia that was bass dominated.) I was simply blown away by their blends. And the lyrics, don't get me stated on the lyrics. While most bands whine about personal problems, Megadeth went out of the way and talked about the world's problems, America mostly. Lastly, for the most part, Megadeth has stayed true to the thrash metal genre. They have only done two albums which weren't as thrashy as their others. (Cryptic Writings and Risk.) Megadeth all the way.
Metallica on the other hand, they are also good live. But, they cannot compare to Megadeth. The solos are good as well, but many of the songs... aren't as I hoped to be. I was a big fan when they released their first four albums, then came the Napster thing... anywho, Metallica lost their prime and their glory when they sold out. St. Anger was horrid, but the Black Album was decent.
In all: Megadeth. Megadeth, Megadeth, Megadeth!

THE EARLY METALLICA ALBUMS ARE THE BEST AND CLASSIC, YET AS FAR AS THE WHOLE CATALOG GOES - MEGADETH HAS BEEN MORE CONSISTANT WITH FAR GREATER TUNES. I ONLY CONSIDER THE FIRST FOUR ALBUMS OF METALLICA AS AWESOME, WHILE MEGADETH HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN. ALSO REMEMBER, ALMOST HALF OF KILL 'EM ALL WAS WRITTEN BY MUSTAINE AND SOME OF LIGHTNING AS WELL. LOVE THEM BOTH, WISH METALLICA WOULD COME BACK TO WHAT MADE THEM GREAT; YET MY CHOICE FOR BEST (NOT MOST POPULAR) IS MEGADETH. LOVE SPEED METAL AND NO-ONE WRITES IT AS GREAT AS MUSTAINE...LANCE

Megadeth outpaces Metallica by a country mile! And while I agree with the columnist when he suggests that Metallica's earlier material is superior to their later, more radio friendly, stuff I have always considered "Ride the Lightninng" to be their crowning acheivement. However, upon reflection, I favor "Ride the Lightning" because it sounds so much like Megadeth. Hetfield even tries his damndest to sound like Mustaine (if you doubt me just give "Trapped Under Ice" another listen)! Megadeth is more agressive, faster, louder, and more consistant than Metallica. Carpal Tunnel syndrome or not, Dave Mustaine is a guitar god!

How about a list of songs that are identical/similar by both groups. I have found many connections between Peace Sells but Who's buying (Album) by Megadeth and Ride the Lightning (album). But there are many songs that are similar; cannot remember the song but there is a Megadeth duplicate/identical song to Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". It's not just that Dave from Megadeth was with Metallica at the time either.

They both rock, honestly. I used to be more of a Metallica fan until I heard of megadeth. If your between both, heres how you pick-
When Dave was in Metallica, he and James saw a girl who was punched in the nose by a punk. Dave and James approached the bastard, and James took off, leaving Dave to fight this huge bouncer by himself. Also, James kicked Dave's dog for scratching the paint on Ron's car. As if that was a good reason to kick a dog. Also when Dave left, they took his songs and not only put there names on the writer's credits, but they put Dave's name at the end. When they toured together years later, they invited Dave to their dressing room, and tempted him to take Heroine when they knew he was trying to clean up his act. They both have amazing songs and albums, but Dave has had more passion, which is why he kicks so much ass on guitar. I vote Megadeth.

I don't mean to upset anyone here. I love both these bands. I don't know where I'd be without them. Right now I'm picking Megadeth because I'm having a pretty intense obsession with their stuff right now. Megadeth just has this appeal to them, this rugged, rockstar-like way they come off, largely due to Dave Mustaine. I love the guy. I know he's had a lot of issues with drugs and violence, but he's gotten through it, played through it. His riffs, his solos...he's a guitar god. As far as his vocals, he knows he can't sing, so I think he uses that sarcastic tone to help him. Sometimes the way he sings just makes me laugh. Listen to Peace Sells or Sweating Bullets ......you'll know what I mean. The rest of the band, well, there's been all sorts if guys in with him, but I love Chris Poland and Marty Friedman on guitar, Dave Ellefson is terrific on bass, and Nick Menza was a beast, especially on Rust in Peace. Megadeth isn't as fragmented as people think they are.
Metallica is great too. Lars is basically my favorite person ever, and the guys have been together forever. Not to mention Metallica gave birth to Megadeth by firing Dave... So really, I'm split 50-50. I lean towards Megadeth, because I love them right now. Only time will tell....

Singer was bad, to the point where he sounded like a whining little kid at times. drummer and bassist were fine but the snare they used sounded so ugly. How can we possibly compare, Megadeth and Metallica. Based on fan data base Metallica is far superior. Look at rhythm guitarists Dave Mustaine could possibly manage to play MOP,Orion,Fuel,Battery etc, but he could no where possibly manage to create such beautiful riffs. Mustaine's riff's may be complicated but they are no where appealing to the ear. Lead guitarist wise Kirk Hammet's solo's are far better crafted and skilled than Chris Broderick's compositions.Drums wise i must admit that Megadeths drummer is superior. Coming to the Vocals Mustaine sounds like a women on crack where as James can variate his voice so well. During the 80's Megadeth lived in the shadows of Metallica. 90's Megadeth's albums were fairly better but compositions like Fuel, UF,UF2 are very unrated compared to their actual standards.Albums like Ride the lightning,MOP,Kill em All can not be compared to any other metal albums because they are probably the best ever made. Over all METALLICA KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!

Let's see. Metallica is obviously well known, and for good reasons. Their first four albums, 'Kill 'em All', 'Ride The Lightning', 'Master of Puppets' and '...And Justice For All' remain honored in my book of metal. But so do Megadeth's 'Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?' and 'Rust in Peace'.
The songs - the songs are what it all comes down to. I would put it this way: Metallica's best is better than Megadeth's best, but Megadeth has more good songs. With this I mean, 'Creeping Death' is better than 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due' but that Megadeth's later works are substantially better than Metallica's. Although Metallica did redeem themselves with 'Death Magnetic' - so did Megadeth with 'Endgame', which turned out to be even better. But in the end, only the best songs of their catalogues remain in our memories. I'll give this one to Metallica.
The songs have... not much differences. They're both thrash metal at heart. They're all fast and furious... but Megadeth is faster. This especially shows in solos. I'd say Marty Friedman doing his thing on 'Tornado of Souls' is something I don't think I'll hear from anyone else. Metallica has a lot of good solos aswell, like 'Fade to Black' and 'One', but sometimes the quick rush of adrenaline can only be found from Megadeth. On solos behalf - Megadeth gets the point.
Live shows... this is a tough one. Metallica performed stunningly back in the day... when I was just a little kid and didn't even listen to any music. I truly wish I could have been there... the pure perfection and the screeching sounds of true metal piercing through your ears, it kicks your ass, kicks your face, exploding feeling nears... oh, I got a little carried away... but when it comes to Megadeth, their shows in the 80's and 90's we're pretty much ruined by Dave's complete inability to sing while playing the guitar. In the 2000's, he's been doing spectacularly. Better than Metallica, in my opinion, mostly because James has sort of lost the legendary rasp that made his voice 'the metal voice'. But nothing compares to the feeling when I saw Metallica rocking out to 'Creeping Death' in Seattle '89... from YouTube. I just completely forgot the world around me. Metallica did better live.
CDs... unarguably Metallica did some really bad records in the 90s. 'Metallica', 'Load', 'Reload', all missed what made Metallica Metallica: the aggression. They TRIED with 'St. Anger' - but with the wrong producer who could only produce poppy garbage, it truly didn't work out, especially with the absence of one of their most talented minds that made the old albums what they we're - Cliff Burton. 'Death Magnetic' was a return to the roots of sorts, but it was somewhat flat and boring when compared to their early masterpieces. But, like with Megadeth, their first four albums will never be forgotten. They are milestones in the development of thrash metal and all the heavier subgenres of heavy metal that spawned in their wake. But so are Megadeth's first four. Especially 'Rust in Peace' was the highpoint of Megadeth, and still remains it. But what's often left out in the dark is the fact that, in the 90's, Megadeth's albums weren't much better than Metallica's in any way. 'Countdown to Extinction' was, literally, the beginning to the countdown of their extinction. Just like Metallica's self-titled. No album after it has managed to capture what made Megadeth the rockers we all wanted to be. 'Endgame' came close, but it had way too many filler songs.
I'll give the CDs score to Metallica - their 90's albums were garbage, but they weren't on the radio for nothing. They were better, and 'Master of Puppets' remains as the most iconic and inspiring metal album ever created.
And... the total package. Well, well. These bands are something you truly will have a hard time comparing. But it didn't turn out 3-1 for Metallica just for the sake of them being Metallica, no. They we're always the grand scheme of things, and there's something in their songs that truly makes them stand out. Mustaine, while a great songwriter and guitar player, could have never, ever come up with stuff like 'One', 'Hit The Lights', 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium' and others. I even think that his contributions to Metallica were better than most what he did for Megadeth. After all - why is Metallica so much bigger than Megadeth today? Yeah, sure, 'a million flies can't be wrong', but always Megadeth has been in the shadow of Metallica. There's a reason somewhere, all of us may not agree on reasons other people present, but I'll just say that Metallica captured the spirit of metal better than Megadeth did.

Now I'm just gonna say my oppinion, rather then just trash Megadeth and bow to Metallica.
I'm just not intrested in Megadeth, thats it. I cannot deny their acomplishments or their fans. I just happen to lean more toward Metallica because thats what I choose to listen to, and Megadeth is what Megadeth fans listen to. But what I can't stand is when people don't bother to get their facts right and just throw out random crap without thinking. THE REASON why Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica is not because he was "too radical" or "too awesome", he was kicked out of the band because he got drunk too often and had a violent behaviour when drunk. And Mustaine was not around for the first 3 albums(as said by DANE!!), he was only around for a bit of Kill 'em All or only Kill 'em all. I didn't bother to look that up fully. The only songs I heard from Megadeth are "Crush 'em" (loved that song btw) and this song that was disguised with the name of a Metallica song. I don't really like Mustaines voca;s because thats just me. I think James Hetfield is a better vocalist, but thats just MY oppinion. I'm not gonna go into the whole "whos a better guitarist" thing because I've really only heard 1 Mustaine solo. And thats me. I lean more into Metallica because I just like their stuff better. Live with it, end of story.

Metallica has always been better than Megadeth......Megadeth's good....but Metallica is better.....Metallica always has experiented with their sound....and yes at times that was a stupid thing to do....but when you compare Metallica's best work which are on their first five albums and the new released DM....all the albums sound different.....in Kill em all they had fast riffs...fast solo's...which some you might think have been written by Dave Mustaine.....but they weren't...only some of the riffs were by Dave....all the solo's were by Kirk Hammett.....and then in RTL...they had blistering riffs super fast solo's...a more mature work than kill em all...MOP has been their best work...they became more heavier....AJA....was light but retained the speed.....the Black Album was slow and damn heavy...well the new album has got the speed...heaviness....awesome solo's.....i think Metallica degraded in the 90's all bcoz of bob rock....he made them like this...bt now with a new producer they ayre back again......whereas Megadeth has always got the same sound....the typical thrash thing...fast solo's...good riffs....but in all Metallica wins......

I definitely say that Metallica is way better of a band. They have vast methods of playing and i am not sure if anybody could actually play Kirk's solos. Metallica was really influenced by Kirk joining and i honestly think that they were pushed in a better direction with him joining.

Without a doubt Megadeth's most popular thrash album. If you were to ask most people which disc was their favorite, most would respond with "Rust in Peace" as the answer. With songs like "Holy Wars," "Polaris," "Tornado of Souls," and "Hangar 18," this CD is short, to the point, and pure metal. The band recently played Rust in Peace in its entirity during a string of American Carnage tour dates with Slayer.

One of the best metal CDs of all time, "Master of Puppets" is Metallica at their peak, and thrash metal best. From the title track, to the "Sanitarium," the unforgettable instrumental "Orion," and the live favorite "Battery," it's a must-own for any metal enthusiast. The last CD to feature late bassist Cliff Burton, you'll hear some amazing basswork throughout the CD, bust probably the most noteworthy on the song "Orion."

Endgame

Death Magnetic

The latest Metallica release, this CD is a return to their roots and, a combination of sounds. You can hear bits and pieces of "Lightning," "Puppets," huge pieces of "Justice," and still lots of Load/Reload, along with some leftover St. Anger in spots. It's a Metallica smoothie of the last 30 years blended into one album. Highlights are the opener "That was Just your Life," the classic thrash style "All Nightmare Long," and the sludgy, And-Justice-For-All-Like "My Apocalypse."

The Best Album

Metallica's Skull Flame Logo
The Worst: Metallica's St. Anger
Is this the same band that brought us Master of Puppets, really?
You have to hit rock bottom before you go back up again, right? Well, you can't get much worse than this disc from Metallica. The song lyrics and riffs are so simplistic and not what Metallica fans are used to that this CD is a throwaway. The largest complaint about this album is the production, which has a low quality garage feel, which is done purposely, but fails to sound good. Their next release, "Death Magnetic," already sounds much more produced, lyrically complex, and actually contains (gasp!) a guitar solo!
Their Worst: Risk
Contains "Crush 'Em". Need We Say More??
Risk is largely regarded as the worst disc in the Megadeth collection. Why? The songs were completely catered for radio airplay. This seemed to backfire, as the album failed miserably! There are a few tracks worth saving, but mostly this CD was panned by everyone. In fact, it made Megadeth realize that they needed to get back to basics, and that they did. Their next CD, "The World Needs a Hero," wasn't the greatest, but was a partial return to the heaviness they do so well.

- I don't know if I'm the only one that does this but i go through phases of liking one band then the other so I can't vote who I like better. If it were down to live shows I think Metallica are better but that's just down to them having more money behind them. I've never been to a Megadeth gig and not liked it. - Megadeth its kinda like iron maiden in some albums, originally the "same"
Metallica is very versatil i think thats how some bands/genres got generated 2day.
aside from metallica's "crappy work" i think we all have mistakes and because metallica was like the FIRST band i think its allright. i love both and i cant say which is better cause im 13 and i found metallca and megadeth recently by myself (1 year ago). I just listen to metallica more in the daily basis so i would have to go with metallica \m/

"Dave is now completely over it and doesn't care anymore. On Metallica's earliest stuff, Dave wrote all of the solos and many songs. This influenced Kirk when he had to learn them. You can also hear Dave's influence on James even up until Master of Puppets. All I can say is that Mustaine and whatever guitarist he has with him at the time (particularly Friedman and Broderick) are more skilled technically than anyone in Metallica. Who is "better" is all opinion, but this is fact. James writes some complex stuff, but Kirk is just a joke with his solos. Besides just the complexity, I believe that Dave has better songwriting abilities. Megadeth has the speed on them as well. Metallica are posers now anyway and they planned on selling out from the beginning. When Dave was kicked out (for his drinking, not his playing), they chose a melodic guitarist instead of a shredder. Now that isn't metal at all, is it?"
-Zacherson
"I quess I really can't favor either band.
TRUE: Dave is more melodic than James and lars in writing style MOST of the time, but credit is due Metallica foe doing and excellent job on Puppets.
TRUE: the black album DID put metallica over the topn in recognition, and sales but DAVE and megadeth in all incarnations have not been slouches either. While most complain that Cyrptic /Risk were not the strongest albums, they do prove that Dave has what it takes to bring substance and style to the meatl genre.
I think what really makes this a moot discussion is that if it wasn't FOR Dave contributing to ealry Metallica albums, there wouldn't be a Metallica. Though Dave wasn't the most stable at the time was he?
Both bands have made one major bungle, Megadeth Lost David, and Metallica lost Jason over minor matters.
Both bands are exceptional in their own rights and have had their losses as well.
So which really IS the better band: Musically... It's Megadeth. Metallica shouldn't be frowned upon for Load/Reload, the "fans" should for not satnding by a band they thought was " the best".
Both bands do what they do, do what they love and we're lucky enough to have them in an age of posers and fakers."
-Jeremy
The funny thing about this rivalry has always been the different ways Megadeth supporters have tried to slice the facts. There are seemingly endless ways to "show" that Megadeth is a better band, whether it be album vs. album, decade vs. decade. However, Metallica just has that intangible, yet undeniable, quality that makes them truly great. As for me (and most die-hard metal fans who aren't pissed at Dave), I prefer listening to Megadeth. Their songs are just so insanely diverse and filled with complexities that always keep me coming back for another listen. Something about listening to "Take No Prisoners" just makes me feel empowered. And who can't relate to songs like "Trust" and "Tornado of Souls"? As far as a head-to-head comparison, I'd have to say that Megadeth has the undisputed edge in two important categories: technicality (if you dispute that, you're pretty thickheaded) and current status. In recent years, Megadeth has been a stronger presence live and in the studio. If you were to rank the last two albums from each band, it would have to be: 1) Endgame 2) United Abominations 3) Death Magnetic 4) St. Anger. As far as the 80s and 90s go, that's just personal preference. Now, all that being said, I'm a true MegaFan, and I have to vote for Megadeth on this one. Metallica, you still kick ass, just not as hard."
