Metal Tags

Have you ever wondered what metal tags are really for, when they originated and what are its uses right now? If so, you've come to the right place. Here's some basic information about military dog tags and so on.

Metal Tags have been used ever since the American Civil war. But of course, the ones available now are made from a different material and are sturdier than the ones used a long time ago. The basic use of military tags is for identification in case of emergencies, or worse, capture by the enemy. The military tags of long ago had the basic information of a soldier, which includes the name of the owner, blood type, rank and sometimes (if the soldier preferred) the religion. But different times called for different styles so in the past, other things like date of birth and date of appointment were also included. Another thing that was also included in the tags was the finger print.

Here are some more information and trivia about these military tags:

-Did you know that another term for these tags are? military dog tags.Dog tags were a nickname used a long time ago, probably during the First World War. It was called such because of its similarity to dog tags in a sense that it was also around the neck and it had information in case the dog or in this case, the person was found by another group of people.

-Today, rectangular metal tags are the ones most commonly used. Ever wondered why it is shaped like that? Well, one reason for that is because a rectangular shape is easier to make than the other old styles, some of which were circular or shaped like a coin.

-Speaking of shapes, did you know that the first tags were oval in shape? This tag was perforated at one end and it wasn't accompanied by another tag. Important details like name, rank and other details were etched here too. On the other side of the tag, there you can see a mark from the right index finger of the owner.

But what really is the importance of these tags? Wouldn't it be bad if the enemy captured these soldiers and were given important information like the rank? What if a high ranking officer was captured during the heat of the battle and in turn the enemy profited from capturing this man and "asked" the officer for vital information?

Of course the answers to those questions above vary from one person's point of view to another. But the answer to the first one is precisely for this: identification. Whether it is for identifying a wounded soldier's name and informing the family of that person or for the doctor to be able to transfuse blood immediately without having to ask the person (who could even be unconscious) in need of immediate care, then surely those are good enough reasons. And if a person is captured by the enemy then the tags would still serve its purpose. At least the family of that person wouldn't be in the dark and know about that person's whereabouts.

These days, military tags come in different shapes and sizes. round metal tags are very common too. But, at present, these tags aren't for military purposes only. These tags are now used as pet tags (the name dog tag now seems ironic), luggage or bag tags, medical tags (especially for kids with allergies or elderly people) and sometimes people use this as an accessory worn around the neck as well.

If you would like to have one, you can just have these for a small fee. The similarity with the old school tags is there except for the technology used to make these tags. Also, instead of the information being stamped, nowadays, metal tag embossing is more popular since this makes the details on the tags easier to read and it certainly won't fade or something like that.

So, in reality, military tags have come a long way, but still, these are very popular since even ordinary people who go around with their everyday lives can use these. These are very important especially for dogs, kids with allergies or the elderly who might need to take some medications. Both young and old can benefit from these tags nowadays and not just soldiers.
