Ottawa's "Place of Worship"

Metropolitan Bible Church

On a late Summer day (September 13th, 1931) in a very tiny room above a shoe store (Higgerty's on Bank Street in Ottawa, Canada), a meeting was organized.

This church was started by a group of about 80 people (from an evangelical church nearby). That was the early beginnings of the Metropolitan Bible Church!

By 1936, they needed a bigger location. After meeting with "cold-blooded" bankers they were told that they would get financing on one condition: That it would be built in the pattern of a movie theater with sloping seats. Why? Because, at that time during the Depression, they needed a back up plan for the building in case the church couldn't pay the mortgage. The idea was to convert it into a movie theater in case of foreclosure. --Yikes!

In a time of declining attendance in a lot of Churches, here is an exception. The place was recently bursting at the seams. Overcrowded with limited parking. Look at this photo of the church at the old location!
Photobucket
Every Sunday over 2000 people squeezed in. The church held three services every Sunday, and its small parking lot could no longer accommodate the hundreds of people who came from as far as Orleans to hear Pastor Rick Reed preach. "People are coming back to church again, because I think they sense an emptiness in their lives," says Godfrey Thorogood, the youth pastor at the church.

Fortunately a NEW church has been built!

Says Gavin Taylor, "The Metropolitan Bible Church, like other evangelical denominations, owes much of its success to an enthusiastic, uplifting style of worship that appeals to people who didn't necessarily grow up in the church. The church band has a drum kit, electric guitars and a synthesizer. The pastor delivers his sermons with the aid of a Power Point presentation. 'He talks about things that people can use in their day-to-day lives,' Thorogood says. To stem the tide of declining memberships, churches have become increasingly creative in serving new and neglected populations. Virtually every church is trying to bolster membership by reaching out to teenagers and young adults."

This church is open and welcomes everyone, any age, any background. If you have a baby with you, no problem, there is a special room for you. If you have children aged 2 to 5, there is also a place to take them to be taken care of while you participate in the service without interruption.

Please come in and join us. The new location is truly beautiful. You have to see it in person to appreciate such an awesome place to get such quality spiritual nourishment!

Please come on in and join us on Sunday. Thank you!

Becoming a Christian is the most important decision you'll ever make. Yet it can happen in a moment. The Bible says:

1. Each of us has disobeyed God's laws. We need to be forgiven for our sins and the rebellion that produced them (Romans 3:23).
2. Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins. He offers us forgiveness based on His sacrifice. No one can earn forgiveness through works since man's outwardly "good" works have no merit in God's sight (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 3:10-12).
3. Those who follow Jesus and accept His sacrifice on their behalf are "born again" into the family of God. Our sins are forgiven and we enter into a new relationship with God and receive eternal life (John 1:12).
4. The ultimate test of our salvation is a pattern of obedience to Jesus and His teachings (1 John 2:3-5).

"Heaven's gate is very narrow and minute,
It cannot be perceived by foolish men
Blinded by vain illusions of the world
Even the clear-sighted who discern the way,
And seek to enter, find the portal barred,
And hard to be unlocked. Its massive bolts
Are pride and passion, avarice and lust."

If you would prefer the Chronological version of the Bible...

The "One Year Chronological Bible" is a wonderful way to gain a comprehensive overview of the what, where and when of the Bible through a planned guide of daily readings. The Bible is finally put into its historical order (as understood by conservative, evangelical scholars), allowing readers to fit the kings, kingdoms, people, and work of God into an understandable format for any reader. The daily reading plan allows one to go through the entire Bible in a year by following an easily a managable format. This is a great resource for students, teachers, or anyone wanting to have a better understanding of the Bible - both Old and New Testaments - and its times

By John (South Dakota, USA)

I have always struggled to read through the Bible in a year. I would start out in January ok, but by March, it was pretty much done for the year. I would then start the next year all over again, always with the same results. That was before I got a Bible that actually told me what to read every day to be on schedule. And then I found out that in addition to that, there is this chronological Bible with the events more or less in the order they happened! I'm hooked now on daily Bible reading and think that if it was easy for others to do, they'd be hooked on it too!

I am now convinced more than anything else that a vigorous spiritual life absolutely requires regular reading and pondering God's Holy Word. I've always struggled with this up to now. Thanks to the daily Chronological Bible, I now look forward each afternoon when I get home from work to see what God will teach me through His word. And because it is in chronological order, the reading is more like a connected story rather than just 66 independent books strung together. Plus, you never really know what you will be reading next, depending on the sequence of events that took place all those years ago. It is a fresh look at a very familiar book, and a new adventure! And the NIV translation is accurate, relevant, and modern, which makes the reading more interesting and meaningful.

I now commit to taking the 15 minutes each day to read through that day's Word with sincerity and diligence. I'm all but convinced that my life is changing due to this commitment, and for the better! God now takes on new meaning in my life, and I have new, fresh relevance as I struggle to live every day. I feel that His Holy Spirit will speak often to me in the Word, and at least 15 minutes each day will be spent reading God's love letter to me so that I can put my priorities in the right sequence.

In the past month or so that I have discovered this, I have had new excitement about a 2000+ year old book, and now look forward to seeing what God will tell me in each day's 15 minutes alone with His Holy Word. All I need is my calendar and my Chronological Daily Bible.

For Christians out there, I'm sure that if you include daily Bible reading and prayer as an ingredient in your daily life, that you will have many rewards for that! I suggest this almost sinfully easy way for you to do daily Bible reading with the assurance that it will bless you in ways you never thought possible! It certainly has for me!

The Shack

Finally! A guy-meets-God Novel that has literary integrity and spiritual daring. "The Shack" cuts through the cliches of both religion and bad writing to reveal something compelling and beautiful about life's integral dance with the Divine. This story reads like a prayer--like the best kind of prayer, filled with sweat and wonder and transparency and surprise. When I read it, I felt like I was fellowshipping with God. If you read one work of fiction this year, let this be it. --Mike Morrell, zoecarnate.com

Same Kind Of Different As Me

Product Description
Meet Denver, a man raised under plantation-style slavery in Louisiana in the 1960s; a man who escaped, hopping a train to wander, homeless, for eighteen years on the streets of Dallas, Texas. No longer a slave, Denver's life was still hopeless-until God moved. First came a godly woman who prayed, listened, and obeyed. And then came her husband, Ron, an international arts dealer at home in a world of Armani-suited millionaires. And then they all came together.

But slavery takes many forms. Deborah discovers that she has cancer. In the face of possible death, she charges her husband to rescue Denver. Who will be saved, and who will be lost? What is the future for these unlikely three? What is God doing?

Same Kind of Different As Me is the emotional tale of their story: a telling of pain and laughter, doubt and tears, dug out between the bondages of this earth and the free possibility of heaven. No reader or listener will ever forget it.

The Love Dare

This book goes along with the movie, Fireproof, which has a Christian marriage theme. The book contains 40 days of Biblical topics and dares for each day. There is a topic, and a reading for each day which includes scripture, a dare, a place to check off when you complete the dare, and some questions about each dare.

An example--one day is about unconditional love, and the questions for that day ask if this is different than you have acted in the past and how the current results are different.

There are lines to write answers in the book. For a couple to do this, you probably each want to get your own book. If you are the only one in your marriage who would buy or do this, you can still do it and get a lot out of it.

I highly recommend this. It is a terrific way to make baby steps toward a better marriage by doing very simple, measurable actions.

Prepare for Rain: The Story of a Church That Believed God for the Impossible

Somehow, throughout the course of years, the Christian church has gotten a bit off track from its true purpose. Michael Catt addresses this issue in his book and shows, through the example of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, how God can work miracles through a people committed to fulfilling the Great Commission.
