Mexican Auto Insurance

Driving in Mexico

Mexican auto insurance puts in the hands of anyone driving in Mexico unquestionable proof that he or she can assume financial responsibility for any accident involving that driver's motor vehicle. Mexican insurance for automobiles fills a need that does not exist within the U.S. A driver in the United States must not expect to assume responsibility for any damages, even if those damages were the fault of another driver.

The specifics of Mexico car insurance differ from the specifics of car insurance sold by U.S. insurance companies. At the scene of an accident in the United States, the authorities do not have a right to declare all involved drivers as "guilty" of causing that accident. In Mexico, however, the authorities do have that right. If one is driving in Mexico, one is considered guilty, until he or she can be proved innocent

Because the driver of any car involved in a car accident that takes place within Mexico can be held responsible for that accident, that same driver can be asked to pay for all the resulting damages. Mexico auto insurance shows authorities that the driver has the ability to cover those damages. Mexican insurance gives a U.S. resident driving in Mexico valuable peace of mind.

The hand of the Mexican law has demonstrated the ability to be very harsh. Look what would happen in the event that you decided to drive into Mexico, but your original plans did not call for a trip that would take you more than 20 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Suppose you therefore did not purchase Mexican auto insurance. If you were to deviate from your original plan, and if you were to drive closer to Mexico City, then you would put yourself and any passengers at risk.

If you were to be involved in an accident, and if you could not show the ability to cover the damages resulting from that accident, then you would face two possible outcomes, neither of which would look very promising. You might have to spend some time in a Mexican jail cell.

You would obviously need legal assistance. Had you purchased some affordable car insurance, your policy might well have included a clause concerning access to legal assistance. Many policies include such a provision.

Someone purchasing Mexico insurance might want to inquire about the availability of legal counsel following an accident.
