Mexican Dress Costume

Traditional Mexican Outfits

If you have a penchant for all things south of the border like I do, you'll have a blast dressing up in a Mexican dress costume. I love it all -- the food, the drink, the climate, the language, the music, the decor, the clothing.... So when it comes to costumes for Halloween, Cinco de Mayo, or any time at all, I want to dress Mexican! I went looking to see what kind of Mexican costumes I could find, and these are my favorites. There are many more, though, so if you don't see something you like here, you're sure to find the Mexican dress costume you want online.

There is quite a wide variety of Mexican costumes for men, women, and children. I think it would be a fun idea to dress the entire family in a Mexican theme. A mariachi costume for Dad, a flamenco costume for Mom, a taco costume for Brother (a taco costume?!). And don't miss the adorable chili pepper costume for Baby.

Admittedly, the flamenco and Carmen Miranda costumes aren't really Mexican, but they have common backgrounds, and the style fits in so well. Everyone will think they are Mexican. Don't forget to buy the accessories for your costume as well. Things like a black wig, a moustache, and the proper sombrero are essential for the perfect Mexican dress costume. Viva Mexico!

Mariachi Costumes

Mexican Mariachi CostumeThere are various styles of music and performers in Mexico, but to be considered mariachi, the style must reflect the state of Jalisco, where the genre originated. Mariachi costumes are modeled after the charro (traditional horseman) outfit. They are typically silver-studded and include a broad-brimmed hat.

Mariachi is the most recognizable music of Mexico, conjuring up images of strolling street musicians playing loud, up-tempo music. Today most mariachis are professionals, paid to entertain at events or serenade a woman with romantic melodies. Though mariachis use primarily stringed instruments, they will often also use brass and woodwinds. All band members can sing, and a feature of the performance is the "grito mexicano," a shout during instrumental passages.

Mariachi adds an exotic, romantic, and happy mood to any event. A mariachi costume is fun Mexican dress for men at Halloween, for Cinco de Mayo, or for any Mexican-themed festivity. This one includes the jacket and pants decorated with silver conchos, along with a red tie and sash. Viva Mexico!

Matadors Costumes

Matador Mexican CostumeA matador's costume is highly decorative and flashy. The outfit is referred to as the suit of lights, or "traje de luces." The matador can be distinguished from the others who take part in a bullfight by the decorations on his costume; the embroidery on a matador's costume is gold, while the others' decorations are done in silver.

The others in a bullfight -- the picador and the banderillero -- prepare the bull for the matador, who is the "master." The activity requires high levels of agility and coordination, but a bullfight is considered an art rather than a sport. In fact, the most important aspect of a bullfight is not whether the bull is killed, but the courage and style exhibited by the matador.

Matadors have long been idolized, much like famous actors or singers. The danger involved in their art confers an alluring mystique. Capture that essence for yourself with this classic matador's costume. The outfit, trimmed with red and gold, includes the pants, jacket with attached cape, vest, and hat. Ole!

Zorro Outfit

Zorro Mexican CostumeBlack is a common color for secret identity hero-wear, and a Zorro outfit is no different. Dressed all in black, Zorro's most identifying accoutrements were a cape, a gaucho hat, and a mask covering the eyes and top of the head.

A fictional character created in 1919, Zorro was a champion of the underdog. In regular life, he was a well-to-do nobleman named Don Diego de la Vega. Donning his secret identity, he became an unbeatable swordsman and marksman who fought those who would take advantage of the helpless.

Zorro was too suave to resort to brute force, instead relying on his cunning and physical prowess to outwit his opponents. You, too, can be dashing and mysterious in a Zorro outfit for Halloween. This one includes the shirt, pants with boot tops, cape, belt, and mask. You'll have all the ladies swooning.

Flamenco Attire

Mexican Flamenco CostumeFlamenco attire is typically an off-the-shoulder dress that fits closely through the body, with a flared skirt that is slit to allow movement. An abundance of ruffles tantalizes with every move of the dancer. Often a lace headdress is a part of the costume.

Spanish, rather than Mexican, in origin, flamenco dress nonetheless has the sultry, alluring Latin style common to both heritages. It is worn for the flamenco dance, an intense and expressive dance influenced by gypsies.

You'll turn every head in the room when you show up in this flamenco dress costume. The panne gown clings to your body, and the satin and lace ruffles flow with your every move. Also included with the costume are the headpiece with lace veil and fishnet stockings.

Mexican Traditional Clothing

Traditional Mexican CostumeIf you prefer a quieter, more traditional look, there are Mexican costumes for you. Serapes and sombreros are instantly identified with Mexico, but they are worn more by men. The traditional Mexican costume for women would include a rebozo and some huarache sandals.

A rebozo is a multi-purpose article of clothing. Mexican women wear them as scarves or shawls so they will always be close at hand when needed. The flat, rectangular piece of cloth can be twisted and knotted to carry almost anything. In fact, a primary use for the rebozo is as a sling to carry babies and young children. The cloth is so much a part of Mexican tradition that it has become folklore, and is worn in performances of folk dances.

Portray a part of the real Mexico in this Mexican traditional outfit. The costume includes a white peasant blouse and a colorful sash and rebozo. One size fits adult sizes 8-12.

Traditional Mexican Shoes

Huarache sandals are a native shoe made of handwoven leather straps. Originally made with leather soles, some are now made with rubber soles, utilizing old tire rubber. Either way, huaraches are comfortable and a perfect finishing touch for your Mexican traditional costume.

Maybe you need a bull costume to go with that bull fighter. Also a Day of the Dead costume but maybe that needs to be a whole separate page.
  • MysticTurtle Oct 12, 2011 @ 5:17 pm | delete
Yes, I was going to put in a costume for Day of the Dead, but also thought it should be its own page. It may not happen this year. But I guess I'll have to go back and find that bull costume that I'd decided not to include. Since you mentioned it....
