Welcome to Mexican Fancy Dress
Greetings... I am continuing my journey through the wonderful world of fancy dress by paying a visit, in this lens, to the colourful land of Mexico. On my journey I hope to unearth a little about the traditional clothes and customs of this Central American country, as well as a little of their culture. We'll also show you how you can recreate the Mexican look yourself through the cunning use of some costumes. You can of course either make these yourself (if you are a creative sort) or buy some items in. The great thing about Mexican costumes is that all you need do is combine some pretty cheap items, such as a ponch and a sombrero. Anyway, more of that to come!
How To Look 'Authentically' Mexican for less than $10!
Ok, so maybe this little guide won't make you look Mexican in a contemporary way. If you want some information about modern Mexican fashions click here. What we will show you is how to recreate the traditional mexican costume look. This consists of a poncho, which is often stripey and multicoloured, and a sombrero. There are two ways you can go about gathering your costume. If you have a very colourful, and relatively big piece of coloured fabric you can actually fashion this into a 'DIY' poncho. To achieve this you simply need to cut out an area in the centre of the fabric to put your head through- voila! The next piece in the puzzle is the sombrero. This rather large style of hat was traditionally worn in Mexico and give the very wide brim you can see the degree of protection from the midday sun it afforded the wearer! These are somewhat harder to make, so I would generally recommend that you buy one either online or from a local costume store. These are actually quite cheap and you can actually acquire a sombrero for less than $10. If you are looking for complete Mexican Costumes (if you dont want to go to the trouble of assembling your own) these can also be purchased online.
Finally, if you are of the male persuasion, you will no doubt want to add a fake Mexican style moustache. These macho bits of fur look super-macho and will make you feel like shaking your maracas and downing a tequila shot ot two! Again these can be purchased very cheaply online or at your local store. So you see, all you need is ten bucks or so and some colourful fabric, and you will look authentically Mexcian!
