Mexican Female Dress

Mexican Costumes For Women

Wondering what to wear on Cinco de Mayo? These Mexican female dress costumes range from traditional to flamboyant to sexy. Find one just right for that first week in May and one for the last week in October -- Mexican outfits make great costumes for the annual Halloween party.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day; it is a commemoration of Mexico's surprising victory over the French on May 5, 1862 -- a victory which bolstered morale and instilled a sense of pride and patriotism in the people of the country.

After several wars over the course of 14 years, Mexico was struggling financially and unable to repay foreign debts. French forces occupied the country to demand repayment. In the state of Pueblo, 4,000 ill-equipped Mexican troops managed to defeat the 8,000 French troops and expel them from the country.

Except in Pueblo, Cinco de Mayo is barely even celebrated in Mexico. It is a much larger event in the United States, where it is a celebration of Mexican culture, with music, dance, and mariachi performances. Make sure you're ready for the next celebration. Get your Mexican dress costume now -- it can do double duty for both Halloween and Cinco de Mayo.

Traditional Mexican Outfits

Mexico's independence from Spain was official September 27, 1821, but the country celebrates the day the movement began -- September 16 -- eleven years earlier. The War of Independence began with El Grito de la Independencia (Cry of Independence) by Miguel Hidalgo.

Hidalgo was part of a group planning to revolt against the Spanish government. Early on September 16, 1810, Hidalgo had the church bells rung and gathered his group to rouse them to action.

Today's celebration begins with bell ringing and a cry of patriotism by the president of Mexico on the evening of September 15. The next day is Mexico's most important holiday, celebrated with parades, concerts, and special programs.

A traditional Mexican outfit is just the thing to get you in the mood for Mexico's Independence Day, or for any event requiring a costume. Slip on a Mexican dress costume and join the cry of patriotism:

Mexicans!
Long live the heroes that gave us the Fatherland!
Long live Hidalgo!
Long live Morelos!
Long live Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez!
Long live Allende!
Long live Aldama and Matamoros!
Long live National Independence!
Long Live Mexico! Long Live Mexico! LONG LIVE MEXICO!!!!

Flamenco Attire

Flamenco dance costume

Mexican Female Flamenco Dress

Flamenco attire is not Mexican female dress at all, but comes from the Andalusian area of Spain. It is worn for performances of the flamenco dance. Thought to have originated in the 18th century, this style of dance clearly had roots in the dance of Gypsies. It is characterized by soulful expression of intense emotion and stamping feet.

This flamenco dress shares the ruffled and colorful style of Mexican attire. Strut your sultry self in the sexy off-the-shoulder dress richly trimmed with volumes of contrasting layered ruffles. Flower accents and matching headpiece are included.

Flamenco Costume Accessories

Complete your flamenco costume with essential accessories. A frilly fan is a must for expressing the soul of the dance. Enhance the sultry look by accentuating the long lines of your neck with an alluring choker. Not all styles of flamenco use castanets and tambourines, but you may like to use them to support the rhythm of your movements.

Carmen Miranda Mexican Female Dress

Although bright and colorful, the Carmen Miranda costume is not Mexican female dress, either. Carmen Miranda was a singer and actress who was born in Portugal and grew up in Brazil. She was known for her fruit hats, platform sandals, and flamboyant image that was a mixture of Brazilian, Portugese, Argentinian, and Mexican.

Miranda, "The Brazilian Bombshell," was a hit in Hollywood, becoming the town's highest-paid entertainer by the year 1946. Between 1940 and 1953, she made 14 films, starring with the likes of Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Betty Grable, Don Ameche, and many other Hollywood greats.

Be the star of the party in this Carmen Miranda costume. You'll be larger than life wearing the multi-colored dress with huge ruffles. Included with the costume are a sash, a glittery fruit hat, and cherry earrings and pin.

You can be sure Carmen had more than one dress, so don't limit yourself to just this one choice. Check out more Carmen Miranda dresses and pick your favorite. And you can never have too many fruit-covered hats!
