Baja or Bust

Here is a brief account of an epic voyage my family and I took a few years ago. We loaded up our Jeep Grand Cherokee full of stuff, put our two kids in the car and drove from our hometown in Alberta all the way to La Paz in Baja California. Along the way we stopped in places like San Francisco, Anaheim, and San Diego. It was certainly the best quality time we have ever spent as a family.

Specific Details

Overall, we put 12000km on the odometer. We took our time driving as our one daughter was only 8 months old and our other daughter was three at the time. We tried limiting our drives to 6 hours a day and finding a hotel with a swimming pool was key to getting the wiggles out of the kids. The breakdown of the US portion of our trip looked like this:
Portland 2 nights
San Francisco 5 nights
Anaheim 7 nights
San Diego 7 nights

This was a wonderful experience for our three year old especially. What do you call a highlight? Showing her the Red Woods? Taking a Cable Car? Meeting Cinderella at Disney Land? Hunting for sea shells on Coronado Island? It was all fantastic and the adventure had not really begun,

Driving the Baja Highway

The Baja HighwayWe entered Mexico via Tiajuana and drove south as fast as we could. The Boarder area is not all that great and we had been told that things improved farther south. We stopped in Ensenada for a lovely pizza lunch and continued to San Quintin for the night. Our next day was a tough one, the desert here was pretty lonely and hot. It got a bit worse after a car sickness episode in the back seat. The Baja is not a very straight road and even my stomach was feeling a bit off and I was behind the wheel. Our second night was spent in San Ignacio a cute little oasis town in the middle of the Peninsula. Finally on the third day we arrived at La Paz where we found our accomodations and spent the next three weeks in paradise. Apart from a few side trips we spent most of our time in La Paz which is truly a wonderful city.

What I will always remember

The Malecon, Downtown La PazAs I reflect about this trip I will always remember :
time we spent together
the warmth of the people of La Paz
the challenge of speaking Spanish
the beauty of the Baja
fishing in the Sea of Cortez
the look in my daughter's eyes when she walked into Disneyland for the first time
swimming with Sea Lions
the variety of road kill on the Baja highway
the wonderful weather
walking on the Malecon on Saturday nights

Your family adventure turned out much better than the one my husband and I did with our two young kids back in 1988. Despite the perils of that trip, I love Mexico dearly. Thanks for an enjoyable lens.
