Oh maaan, this is another thing I have to give up, and the Mexican Restaurant near me makes such deliscious and tender sopapillas! Maybe I can try this recipe as a gluten free one.

I love sopapillas! My favorite so far were at a restaurant (can't remember the name) in Galveston, Texas. So warm and yummy!

Just my humble opinion. Sopapillas are not part of the vast Mexican cuisine, even they are very common in Mexican-like restaurants, but in the USA. It may be as a result of the mix of people from everywhere who decided their origin just guessing. More likely, they are original from New Mexico, and that could be the reason of the misunderstanding.

Sopapillas were one of my favorite desserts when I was a kid. There used to be a restaurant here in Tucson that made the best!

I can't wait to try these! I've only come across baking powder type recipes before, not a yeast version. A favorite part of visiting my grandparents, in Albuquerque, was having sopapillas at the Mexican restaurants there! Yum!

Sopapillas are yummy, probably one of my favorite mexican recipes. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?
  • CCGAL Sep 12, 2010 @ 9:12 pm | delete
Sopapillas made with yeast ... that's new to me. I'm going to have to try it. The recipe I'm most familiar with is more like a thick tortilla that's deep fried. Making it with yeast and egg would yield an interesting, more donut like texture and flavor I suspect. Sounds yummy!
  • Ecolicious Jul 17, 2010 @ 12:44 pm | delete
never had these. they sound tasty. i'll have to give them a try.
  • Joie May 8, 2010 @ 2:26 am | delete
About 35 years ago, my husband and I visited an out-of-the-way restaurant in Canada, of all places, and tasted our first sopaipillas. They were made with yeast, like yours. They were UNFORGETTABLE. Ever since then, I've been looking for that recipe, but most I've found are made with baking powder. I am so thrilled to find your recipe, and I can't wait to try it. Muchas gracias!

What a terrific talent you are! I grew up where family and all friends had the "Mexico Chiquita habit." The tastes we became accustomed to defined the way I judge Mexican food till my dying day! This mexican sopapillas recipe is very tempting! 5*/fav/roll to secret-cheese-dip
(I'd love your opinion of it!

These are one of my favorites. Kind of like a fresh donut with ice cream - they're good. Great work!
