Mezzaluna means half-moon in Italian and the crescent shaped knife blade of the mezzaluna makes short work of chopping and mincing herbs and vegetables and best of all it's really fun to use.

What is a Mezzaluna?
A Mezzaluna is a crescent-shaped knife.
A mezzaluna is a curved knife which typically has a handle on either end, allowing the cook to use a rocking motion to chop, cut, and mince foods. This style of knife can be extremely useful in the production of a wide range of foods, and while it is not a vitally necessary kitchen tool, you may find yourself enjoying and appreciating one if you have access to it. Many kitchen stores sell mezzalunas, and some also offer sharpening services for these unique knives.

Handwashing is recommended!
Although your mezzaluna may say that it is dishwasher safe, I recommend handwashing it. Dishwashers tend to dull knife blades.

- My very OLD "halfmoon" cutting knife has ONE SINGLE HANDLE in the middle (instead of two handles on each end. This single handle is oriented parallel to what would be the two end handles of a normal mezzaluna. This allows you to press down really hard with one hand when parting foods. I cannot find a new single handled mezzaluna like my old one - can anyone help?

- My folks took an extended RV trip around the country a few years ago and brought these back for everybody. They had seen them being used and decided we could all use them. I have to admit that we often forget about it. I'm definitely going to go pull it out again!

- Mezzalunas are also great for slicing pizza... I much prefer them over traditional (round, rolling) pizza cutters!
