MGMT- Fake Music at its Finest

Ranked #2,444 in Music, #67,373 overall

People from the future trying to make music from the 70's!

Usually I don't like fake music, but when I was introduced to the song Electric Feel, I was hooked onto MGMT's music. When I say fake music I mean computer generated or auto tuned music. Don't get me wrong, MGMT does use real instruments in their music, but they also use computer generated sounds. After discovering some of their other songs, I decided that I preferred the slightly less popular songs like Congratulations and Siberian Breaks. MGMT, pronounced M.G.M.T. or Management, has a catchy psychedelic pop sound. Make sure to listen to some of their songs below, you may discover that you like it, if you don't already!

About the Band

Ben and Andrew are the leading force

Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanwyngardenBen Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden started MGMT during their freshman year at Wesleyan University. "We weren't trying to start a band," stated Ben. "We were just hanging out, showing each other music that we liked." They experimented with noise rock and electronica before settling on their psychedelic pop sound. MGMT started as "The Management", but changed the name to MGMT after discovering that there was another band with that name. After graduating in 2005, they toured for Time to Pretend EP.

When they got a phone call from Columbia Records in Autumn of 2006, they thought someone was joking with them. In 2007 they teamed up with Flaming Lips/Sleater-Kinney music producer Dave Fridmann to make their first signed album, Oracular Spectacular. The other three members were added at this time.

They were nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and their song "Kids" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals.

They will begin work on their 4th album, MGMT, in April 2011.

Andrew VanWyngarden

About the Members

Andrew VanwyngardenAndrew VanWyngarden is the main singer of MGMT. He was born on February 1, 1983 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born under the Aquarius birth sign. When asked what he thinks the best time to pretend is during an interview (reference to MGMT's song Time to Pretend), he answered that the best time to pretend is during interviews. Does that mean that nothing he says in an interview is true?

Andrew's parts in the band are the lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, and drums.
Andrew has a tattoo reading the word "real" on his chest.

    Flash Delirium

    my favorite music video

Usually music videos make songs worse, but this video really improved the song for me. I wasn't a big fan of Flash Delirium, but it became one of my favorite MGMT songs after I watched the video.

I don't know why you think that electronic or computer generated music is "fake". Are paintings less real than engravings, were locomotives somehow fake compared to horse-pulled buggies?
Music is real, regardless of what created the noises. What makes music music is the thought behind it, It's the message that the artist is attempting to convey.
Whether someone is beating drums or raising their voice in song or using computerized beeps, they're all doing the same thing.
The sound of wind whistling through trees is music, because it causes emotion in the listener.
So why are computer generated noises somehow less real??
      Just some food for thought.

I agree with you that the music is no less real because it uses computer generated noises. It is a step into a new generation of musical style, a way of making music with new technology instead of the old instruments. Thank you for your thoughtful and well put comment. :)

Just curious if you were categorizing computer generated sounds as "fake" music. MGMT are great and their live show is top notch. I'm still getting into them, but I've liked everything I've heard so far. Nice lens!
