MGS 4 vs GTA IV

Gamespot has only ever rated six games a perfect 10/10 score, two of these have been released within two months of each other. One being Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and the other being Grand Theft Auto IV. These games have quite a few things in common with the main being that you kill lots of people in the game. One of the other things I'd like to say these games have in common is that they are both forth in the series. But if I said that I would be wrong as Grand Theft Auto IV is the ninth in its series and Metal Gear Solid 4 is the fifth in the Metal Gear Solid series and seventh in the Metal Gear series.

So the questions we will explore in this debate is is there such a thing as a perfect game and which of these games is the best.

Let the ripping apart begin.

10/10

We start off this debate with the question "Does any game deserve 10/10?"

To me 10 out of 10 means that everyone should like the game no matter what as 10 out of 10 denotes that the game is perfect. So tell me what you think on the subject.

Does any game deserve 10/10? Also tell me why you think so.

Yes

Bainesy92 says:

I think that Uncharted: Drakes Fortune deserves 10/10 coz it is a world class game and it isn't a game were you complete it in a day, also it has trophies and they are something to play the game for if youve already completed it.

pele_rocco says:

If the game is absolutely epic such as MGS4 which I am yet to find a fault with because it is the best game ever, of course.

Dylan says:

Obviously, if you're using a scale based on the opportunity to have "10" as a potential score, then yes...games can deserve a 10 out of 10. But our perception, I believe, of a perfect game will change in time as our technology progresses. Think about it:

Nintendo games back in the day were incredible works of art...in their time period.

But now, a new era of technology allows us to experience much more richer games compared to those in the past.

To sum it up, I think you can have a game with a 10/10 rating...but it's all based on your own personal perception.

That's the best I can explain it.

Dude says:

10/10 is a toughy. However I think that if the game is pretty much the best ever, despite imperfections (that's life I suppose), then 10/10 should be rewarded. It should not be taken as "Perfect" but as IGN put it "Masterful" which both of these games are.

mucas says:

yes everyone knows that no game could be perfect but there is some games that are close to perfect like mgs4.

dudas says:

raj says:

i say that grand theft auto 4 is a hundred times better than metal gear solid 4 because it is way more realistic and because the story line and, just the all out gameplay is better. And yes i do think there can be a perfect game, which is GTA 4 and not MGS4

paper says:

MGS 4 is sooooooo much better than GTA 4. All of the gta games are the same,, killing and "earning respect". However MGS 4 has 4 different incredible story lines.

Justin says:

Yes, but no one should ever view "10 out of 10" as "Perfect". Because no game is perfect, but the game can be close to bringing perfect enjoyment to the player(s).

Rick says:

Yes because certain games deserve the recogntion.

Junito says:

yes

Marc says:

games can deserve 10/10 but that does not mean it's perfect. ratings are meant to sum up a review of the opinion of a reviewer, and help readers decide if they should play a game. a 10/10 usually means a game is worth playing

mgs4 says:

i think that if a game is good enough then it can be perfect. it cant have any glithches or flaws though. But i think that mgs4 is a lot better than gta4.

Gamefreak says:

Both of them rock u dumbasses!

yamumhasadick says:

Vice city is better than any other metal gear solid and thus deserves a 10

JKKK says:

Yes, I do think there are games out there that are considered the "best of the best", and those games should receive perfect scores. However, it should be almost impossible to achieve a perfect ten. Only a select handful of games do deserve a 10/10.

No

Zaphod B. says:

No, because 10 out of 10 denotes that every1 should like the game.

MGS4 is only really a 7 out of 10 game (maximum). Cutscenes in games are ok, but when they go on for that long it really makes you want to rip the game out of the drive and throw the damn disc in the fire.

onlinegangster says:

No

Ryan says:

As long as personal opinions exist there is no such thing as a perfect game, the only perfect game is perfect by preference.

Noel says:

personally i wouldnt give any game 10/10. but mgs4 and gta4 comes extremely close. ppl who say that gta4 is better than mgs4 are stupid. its like comparing star wars to indiana jones. they arent in the same type of genre. one focuses on story and feelings while another focuses on the realism and hard life. both games hit their mark and both deserves praise; none lesser than the other.

Mattias says:

Ugh, what's with the security word? lickmeow? Anyhow, yes, I think MGS 4 deserves to have 10/10

sissors says:

A game does not deseve 10/10 but everyone has opinions.

rock says:

i dont think that a game can be perfect because there can always be glithches of mess-ups. The gameplay will always lag and even if it is a little it will,,,,, therefore its not perfect.

Gdoogy says:

Games can't be perfect, everyone has different opinions.

Matt says:

If any game gets a 1010 .. it should automatically be deducted to 9.9 for making other games look bad

Matt says:

No. 10/10 is, literally, perfection. That means that every single texture is perfectly aligned, and not repeated once. Every single model is perfect in detail. There are absolutely 0 bugs at launch. The FPS never drops below 60. Ect, ect. And, on top of that, the game mechanics, balance, skill factor, yada yada have to be 100% spot on. It's just not possible to make something that perfect. 10/10 shouldn't mean that the game is really, really, good (as some reviews use it), but that the game is _perfect_.

GameStock says:

No, games always have flaws. GTA IV and MGS4 have a lot of game play time now they're on blu-ray. PS3 MGS4 is an epic and I did buy them both. MGS4 wins hands down.

http://www.gamestock.co.uk/mgs4

RichLeigh says:

No, a single game can never possibly be perfect. A game will never appeal to all - there will always be some that do not appreciate the game and no game will ever warrant a 10/10 for that reason I feel.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Guns of the Patriot

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (commonly abbreviated to MGS4) is a stealth action video game in the popular Metal Gear series. Directed by Hideo Kojima, Shuyo Murata and Yoji Shinkawa, Guns of the Patriots was developed by Kojima Productions exclusively for the PlayStation 3 video game console. The game, designed around the motto, "No Place to Hide!", is the last Metal Gear game developed by Hideo Kojima, and the last game in the series starring Solid Snake. The game was released worldwide on June 12, 2008, 10 years after the release of Metal Gear Solid and 20 years after the first Metal Gear.

Gameplay

In Metal Gear Solid 4, the player (Old Snake) must navigate the game world in order to progress, using stealth and cunning in addition to traditional combat. It uses the series' traditional third person view with full camera manipulation, but also allows the freedom to play in first-person mode, as well as an over the shoulder view which can be switched from right shoulder to left for corner maneuvering. The Close Quarters Combat system has been completely revamped. The player is also able to interrogate guards for information and supplies.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV (abbreviated to GTA IV and GTA 4) is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North."Grand Theft Auto IV: GamePro is the first to play the biggest game of 2008," GamePro 235 (April 2008): 50-51. It is the ninth title in the Grand Theft Auto series and the first in its fourth generation. Grand Theft Auto IV was released worldwide (except in Japan) on 29 April 2008 for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Two episodic packs will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360, the first of which has been delayed until the first quarter of Take-Two's 2009 financial year.

The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from Eastern Europe, who comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, only to find his cousin has lied about the wealth that was promised to be awaiting him. Like other games in the series, GTA IV features "open-world" gameplay that gives the player more control over their playing experience. GTA IV is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode, which contains fifteen different game types.

A major commercial and critical success, Grand Theft Auto IV broke sales records by selling about 3.6 million units on its first day of release and grossing more than $500 million in its first week. The game received overwhelmingly positive reviews, becoming the highest-rated video game of all-time on review aggregator sites Metacritic and Game Rankings for over a month after it was launched.

Metal Gear Solid 4 vs Grand Theft Auto IV - The Debate

Which of these two games is the best and why?

Metal Gear Solid 4

pele_rocco says:

Obviously GTA:IV doesn't win hands down, due to the fact that Snake is Big Bosses son.

mike says:

metal gear solid 4 is better then gta 4 hands down. when i bought gta 4 i was so hyped but it turned out that it was just overrated.with mgs4 it was everything i wanted and even more.

Ryan says:

I enjoyed both games a lot, but MGS 4 amazed me in a way that GTA 4 definitely did not. Sure, GTA 4 had some awesome new gameplay elements with an enjoyable story and had top-notch production value.. but MGS 4 did the same a lot better. It was simply more memorable.. and throughout the entire game I found no flaw. One major flaw GTA 4 had was that near the end it got way too repetitive.. and that brought the personal score I gave it from its original 10 to a 9. MGS 4 deserves not game of the year but game of the century.. while GTA 4 stands only as one of the better games of the year.

every says:

MGS 4

Gdoogy says:

Metal Gear Solid 4. I like being stealthy.

Rick says:

Compared to MGS4, GTA4 was just a complete let down. I mean MGS has the brilliant story, excellent graphics. GTA4 looks like n old ps2 game compared to MGS4

Alex says:

There is no aspect of GTAIV that is better than MGS4. Story, Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Lifespan, Presentation, all better in MGS4. GTAIV was just a bit of a let down really.

bardo says:

wait on the other hand i just got convinced that metal gear solid 4 is way better than gta 4 the first time i picked gta 4 because i have always been a fan of gta and not so much of metal gear i played the 2nd and the 3rd metal gear but gta has much more gtas but ifu think about it metal gear is so good that it counts as like 6 gta's.but what they need to do is come upwith a new franchise not just continuse on with old classic games cuz if u think about it the next ones always just and enhansment kinduh like madden but the changes are alot bigger

JKKK says:

Each of these games has their certain pros and cons against each other. MGS4's story is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than GTA4's. However, the replay value of GTA4 is much greater than MGS4. I will still play GTA4 a year from now just for fun. As for the inline play, neither game really excels, but I prefer MGO. As a series, Metal Gear tromps all of over Grand Theft Auto. Every game Metal Gear game is interwoven with all the others, where as GTA4's story has nothing to do with it's predecessors. I give MGS4 a slight edge.

Grand Theft Auto IV

The Trophy Hunter says:

GTA IV wins hands down, especially since trophies have been announced. Give MGS 4 trophies and I may re-consider my choice

ForteanJo says:

GTA4 may lack the graphical polish of MGS4 but in sheer variety of gameplay it knocks the socks of MGS4.

Typical game play in GTA IV: Steal a car/fly a helicopter/buy a hotdog/play darts/play pool/drink 'n drive/buy clothes/shoot people/punch people/stab people/become a bounty hunter/become a taxi driver/watch TV/do stunts/drive around town/walk around town/evade the cops/take in a show/go to a strip joint/jump on a train/and on and on and on

Typical game play in MGS4: Watch a 20 min cut-scene, sneak past some soldiers, watch a 20 min cut-scene, take out a boss, watch a 20 min cut-scene, repeat for umpteen acts (did we really need a 20 min cut-scene at the end of every act to be followed by another 20 min cut-scene at the start of the next one?)

Now MGS4 is polished to the extreme but it's hard to become immersed in a game where you end up watching events unfold, especially where the story isn't exactly the easiest of things to follow.

If I wanted MGS4 style entertainment, I'd be better off playing Splinter Cell and pausing it every so often to watch Ghost in the Shell on DVD. Exactly same thing.

GTA4 might not have lived up to all the hype, but MGS4 is really a case of the Emperor's New Clothes, with all you fan boys playing the part of the Emperor.

Christien says:

Metal Gear Solid 4 has too many ****ing cutscenes. If they want to make a movie, they should make a ****ing movie, but without the pretense that it's a game. GTA IV, however, feels like a movie while retaining amazing gameplay.

bardo says:

i think gta 4 is better than metal gear simply because grand theft auto got a 10 so now their gona start giving a whole lot of games a 10.but i think the metal gear story line s much better then gta 4 but gta 4 has that feel to it that and in metal gear its all about killing and shooting wich get real boring and in gta u always have somthing to do but the one thing i hate about gta 4 is when u drive cars they dont turn realy well and its very hard to drive but both of these games go along in my top ten games along with banjo tooie, gta san andreas, gta vice city, gta vice city stories, mario kart 64,halo 1, and kingdom hearts 2.those games are kinduh gay but if u grewup with them and u play threw the story u get to like them alotso in all its kinduh a tie but i go with grand theft auto 4 ohh and before i forget gta 4 left out to many things that san andreas had and saints row is picking them all up and making an overall better game.but i still hate saints row for thinking they could mess with the gta series and say their better when their not

GTA seems to be a game for the masses, something to pick up and play for 20 minutes every once-in-a-while, but with no depth. MGS4 is impossible to just play for a short time, and wont suit everyone, but get into it and its a much MUCH more rewarding game.
