Candle Making or Direct Sales - Start The Candle Business That's Right For You!
Here are some details on how you can start a home candle business. Your two basic options are to make your own candles to sell or market for a direct sales candle business.
Both types of home candle business offers many ways to create an income- including retailing, fundraising, and, if you choose to go with an established direct sales company, residual income through team building. Here are some of the factors I weighed when deciding which home candle business to start.
It is important that you choose a home business that is simple, affordable, and...fun. I've also included here some direct sales tips that will help you whether you make your candles or become a candle consultant.

Things to Consider Before You Start a Candle Business
- Highly Consumable with large target market. With 90% of women and 60% of men purchasing scented candles year round, it's clear that the candle product is consumable and the market very large. Among the biggest trends: the natural wax candle, including soy; wickless candles, home fragrance products other than candles, and candle making.
- Has company information been disclosed? Or do you see smoke and mirrors? Can you visit their headquaters or speak personally to the owners? With an reputable candle company, you can!
- Has the company reached a "4-5 year benchmark"? Most businesses, a whopping 95%, fail within their first five years. Look for a course of aggressive, yet manageable growth.
- Are all the start up costs disclosed? Make sure the company provided website details all the costs involved with a candle business. Do your'homework' and have the necessary resources to get a good start in their business. Be sure to include marketing expenses (like business cards and advertising), samples, and collateral.
- Are all ongoing costs disclosed? There are free, low cost, and more expensive ways to build a business. Your potential sponsor should explain all of this before you sign up. This allows me to help you develop a business plan that fits your life and budget.
- Is exceptional company and team training provided? Be sure that your company/team has successful people who give of themselves and supply free training several times per week.
- Are you encouraged to ask questions and think about it? Or are you pressured with someone trying to 'close' you on the first or second call? Quite frankly, I don't like to have someone else controlling the conversation and giving me a sales pitch. Your questions are important.
- Are you treated as an entreprenuer, or is someone trying to force you into a "cookie cutter" system? This is an important consideration. Most people want to go into business for themselves, not to be dictated to. There are many different ways to make money with this business- expos, retail, home parties, fundraising, corporate gifts, team building, online, offline, etc. Decide what you want to do and then get the training, support, and customizable tools.
- Can you market freely? Many direct sales candle companies have restrictions on online marketing. If selling online via ebay or etsy, or your own personal website is something you want do do, you'll need to ask right up front. Also ask if you can use the company name on your websites, etc. If you can't, I can show you how to market your candle business online without violating company policy.
- Is a monthly auto-ship required? You'll need to consider if you can afford a monthly auto-ship. Or, if no auto-ship,do you need a certain amount to be qualified for commissions or to stay active? Most direct sales companies do have some types of minimums.
