Miami Central Attractions
A walking tour of this precinct is recommended to fully appreciate the spectacular rejuvenation of the 1920's buildings in the Art Deco Historic District. This district is the heart of South Beach and is one of the largest areas on the US National Register of Historic Places.
Miami has several buildings that are unique and stand out from their surroundings. Although morbid curiosity draws most visitors to Versace Mansion (aka Amsterdam Palace) where the famous fashion designer was murdered on the front steps, the magnificent architectural features make this house a genuine attraction in its own right.
The Estefan Enterprises' headquarters is hard to miss in its whimsical building with a facade of fanciful shapes and carved color-lined waves.
Dating from 1937, the historic post depression Miami Beach Post Office building features a fabulous rotunda, an intricate sun motif, coral steps up to the entrance and a mural depicting parts of South Florida history.
The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a magnificent villa built in 1916 and serves as a reminder of the extravagance displayed by the business czars of the period. This was he winter retreat for the industrialist James Deering and the ornate mansion took 1,000 artisans 5 years to build.
The magnificent gardens are a highlight of this visit. The villa is overflowing with valuable antiques, relics and works of art fating from the 16th century. Most of the original furnishings and paintings are still intact.
The Venetian Pool is Miami's most beautiful swimming pool, dating from 1924 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The lagoon pool is fed by underground artesian waters which is shaded by three-story Spanish porticos with fountains and waterfalls. The pool is drained and refilled nightly from an underground aquifer during summer.
Miami Surrounds
A Miami favorite is the Parrot Jungle and Gardens. The entertainment is provided by cockatoos on roller-skates, card-playing macaws, and parrots performing stunts. Along with the hundreds of parrots, macaws, peacocks, cockatoos and flamingos, the park features an Everglades exhibit, a petting zoo, and several theaters, jungle trails, and aviaries.
The Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, is located at the southern end of Key Biscayne and has some of the most secluded beaches in Miami. The historic 1825 lighthouse is the oldest in South Florida. This reserve is consistently rated in the top 10 beaches in the U.S. for its 1.25 miles of wide, sandy beaches.
The 83 acres of rare and exotic plants are the attraction at Fairchild Tropical Garden. It is the largest rainforest environment of its kind anywhere in the continental USA. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded at the garden and the 11 lakes and numerous meadows are home to palmettos, vine pergola, palm glades, and other unique species of fauna.
