Michael Jackson: The King of Pop
Michael Jackson was just a child when The Jackson 5 debuted on the music scene in the mid sixties. For the next four decades he influenced music, dance, and fashion throughout the world, and dominated pop culture unlike any other celebrity. Michael Jackson launched a solo career in 1971, and a decade later the successes of Beat It," "Billie Jean," and "Thriller" enshrined him at the top of the music industry. His state-of-the-art music videos were instrumental in the eventual success of MTV, and also introduced viewers to a number of highly stylized dance techniques, including the robot and the moonwalk. Thriller, released in 1982, remains the best-selling album of all time. Despite a troubled personal life, Michael Jackson was tremendously popular with his fans and won hundreds of awards—more than any other recording artist in music history. When Michael Jackson died unexpectedly on June 25, 2009, the world mourned. Michael Jackson's fans are still drawn to Los Angeles to pay tribute. They visit Michael Jackson's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his family's home, and his final resting place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. Halloween costumes based on some of Michael Jackson's key wardrobe pieces are always popular. Life-size cardboard standups offer another way to pay respect to the undisputed King of Pop.
