Michael Jackson - The Legacy
For 40 years Michael Jackson was the King of Pop: he was the consummate entertainer and one of the best selling artists of the last century.
While we cannot ignore the strange behavior, the court cases and his ever changing appearance, Michael Jackson's legacy as an artist will be his music and his performances. Unlike many singers, his musical influence spread worldwide with fans not only in the US, but also as far apart as Europe, Asia and South America.
His music was influential at a time when the soul and rock genres were going through a transitional period, during the emergence of hip-hop and solo rock in the Eighties, leading to his all time best-selling album "Thriller".
Although he is sadly no longer with us, Michael Jackson's legacy will live on in the memory of those who grew up with his music and those who he "thrilled" during his live concerts.

The disc ends with two versions of the never-released "This Is It." This song is featured in the film's closing sequence and includes backing vocals by Michael's brothers, the Jacksons.
Disc two offers previously unreleased versions of some of the artist's classic tracks. This disc also features a touching spoken word poem from Michael Jackson entitled "Planet Earth" that has never been heard before.
The two-disc "This Is It" is a stand-alone companion to the motion picture and includes a 36-page, commemorative booklet featuring exclusive photos of Michael from his last rehearsal.

Michael Jackson: Personally

When you think of Michael Jackson, what comes to mind first?
Although I might be forgiven otherwise, I didn't think of ''Wacko Jacko,'' the self-proclaimed ''King of Pop'' epithet, ''Jesus Juice,'' the never ending evidence of his ever changing face, or baby dangling - I immediately think of the music.
I thought of one of the first albums I ever owned. It was The Jackson 5's 1970 album "ABC" and how much I loved to listen to their versions of "La-La (Means I Love You)", "Never Had a Dream Come True" and, of course, the singles "The Love You Save" and "ABC".
I thought about how funky Jackson's "Off the Wall" album was upon its release in 1979. And 30 years later, it still makes me dance.
I remember the anticipation of owning a copy of "Thriller". I have it on vinyl. I know every song from it by heart, because it was and still is one of the strongest and brightest examples of r'n'b, soul, rock and pop music. Do you remember how just about every kid of every color and creed could show off some version of at least one of Jackson's signature moves?
I vividly remember going to one of his concerts locally, and renting binoculars so that I could just marvel at the speed of his dance moves. This was at the time when his "Moonwalk" was all the rage, arguably his first true defining superstar moment. It seemed that his feet never touched the ground, as if he were able to float across the stage. And, undoubtedly, there was the music, the atmosphere - and the wonder of Michael Jackson.
I bet that many people who haven't described themselves as Michael Jackson fans for some time, and who might have spent more time joking about Jackson's behavior of the last decade, also are remembering the music first and what it meant to their lives. For those same people, Jackson's music impacted their lives, much the same as Elvis Presley's had some years earlier.
What will be Jackson's real legacy?
After the initial impact of his death begins to fade, it won't be the tabloid headlines, scary photographs or court cases that will continue to be played on radios around the world. It will be the ''Smooth Criminal'' we recall from his videos, dancing with precision and singing with passion.
It will be the tracks from "Off the Wall", "Thriller", "Bad" and "Dangerous" that have become a part of the memories of a generation.
It will be the music.

- Excellent tribute Bonnie. Michael was born in the same year as me, so I kind of grew up alongside him, if that makes sense. Sad to see his demise in latter years and now his departure.
