Michael's Second Show Feet Of Flames Was Born From Lord Of The Dance

The second show in the trilogy of smash dance shows by Michael Flatley was entitled Feet Of Flames. It bears a remarkable resemblance to his first show, Lord Of The Dance and that was no accident.

The choreography for Feet Of Flames Hyde Park was originally slated to be Michael Flatley's last show as the Lord Of The Dance wound down.

It was a stellar performance in London's Hyde Park in July 1998, playing to approximately 50,000 people. It resembles Lord of the Dance. But Feet Of Flames doubled the dancers, added new numbers, and a new stage with multi-level tiers.

The newest dance number was Michael Flatley's solo - Feet of Flames, which the show is based around. The show introduced some of the key elements that are now featured when Flatley performs. His silver-heeled shoes made by Freed's of London were used for the first time in this show. TV screens on both sides of the stage were also installed and now used in all the shows that featured Michael Flatley from then on.

Feet Of Flames actually underwent four transitions and slightly different releases during it's four tours which we will cover more shortly.

Overall Feet Of Flames had a run from 1998 at it's birth in Hyde Park until it's latest tour which was a two week tour in Taiwan in 2008.

A Little Of Michael Flatley's Story

Michael Flatley was born in Chicago, Illinois. His family owned a construction business on the south side of Chicago.

Michael was of Irish heritage, the son of Irish immigrants and the passion for Irish Dance was in his blood. He often visited family in Ireland as a child. Both his mother and grandmother, Hannah Ryan, were champion Irish dancers. Hannah always encouraged him to follow his heart and his dreams. When Michael realized those dreams, an empty front row seat at every one of his shows marked his silent tribute to the late grandmother he so adored.

Michael's other loves and interests are evident in all his shows. The flute is always incorporated into Michael's shows as he loves the flute and is an accomplished flautist. His love for kickboxing is also evident in his high kicks and flamboyant choreography.

Michael Flatley tried his hand at teaching dance but his love for live performing called him away from that. He toured and performed whenever he could.

His big break came in 1994 when Riverdance made it's rise onto the dancing scene. Michael was one of it's creators and the show created a new love and following for Irish Dance.

Riverdance paved the way for Michael's break out on his own as a performer, dancer, producer and choreographer in his own right. He produced three shows that toured the globe: Lord Of The Dance, Feet Of Flames and Celtic Tiger.

Feet Of Flames

Feet Of Flames bears remarkable resemblance to it's predecessor, Lord Of The Dance. It became a production of the show in a grander scale with twice as many dancers, many more effects and visuals and the addition of new dance numbers.

Feet Of Flames enjoyed stature in three world tours during the late 1990's and early 2000-2001. More recently though, the show was revived in 2008 for a two week tour schedule in Taiwan. For the first time, Michael Flatley would not dance in the show but his production company is testing the waters for possible future tours around the world.

There were three distinct tours of Feet Of Flames. Here is a little more information on how the show evolved and the tours played out:

Feet of Flames: Hyde Park

Feet of Flames made it's debut in 1998. It was originally created as part of Michael Flatley's last show as the "Lord of the Dance". Since it turned into a show all of it's own, it still closely resembles its predecessor, Lord of the Dance. But on a much grander scale!

Feet of Flames 2000 World Tour

In September 1999, Michael Flatley announced a Feet Of Flames world tour for 2000. The tour began in Germany. The show differed significantly from the original 1998 version. The show had new numbers, new leads, a new story line and a "whole new outlook" in the words of Flatley. Original female leads Bernadette Flynn and Gillian Norris were replaced by Sarah Clark and Leigh Ann McKenna. The role of the Dark Lord was changed from Daire Nolan to Stephen Brunning. Both Daire Nolan and Gillian Norris went on to pursue their own careers after the 1998 show. Bernadette Flynn left to dance with Lord of the Dance troupe one until 2001. Some of the characters changed slightly in the show. Saroise the "good girl" became The Swan. Morrighan the Temptress (the "bad girl") became Cleopatra. Helen Eagan's part as the little spirit expanded into a bigger role as she became the Court Jester in the World Tour. The Highlight of the 2000 tour was Flatley and the Troupe performing in Budapest to over 100,000 people. The European part of the 2000 World Tour concluded on July 29, 2000 in Stormont Castle, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Feet of Flames 2001 Victory Tour

The 2001 tour, which was titled the USA Victory Tour, had a preview show on June 6, 2001 in the Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, South Carolina.

The tour officially began in June 2001 in the AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami, Florida. The highlight of the tour was Michael Flatley performing for the first time in Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 29, 2001. The Victory Tour ended on July 29, 2001 in Dallas, Texas in the American Airlines Center, the second event to be held at the venue. The last time Feet Of Flames was performaned with Michael Flatley was July 29, 2001. Michael Flatley was said to have retired that night but later would come out with a new show - Celtic Tiger.

Michael Flatley Is Quoted As Saying......

Here Are Some Great Quotes From The Lord Of The Dance

"Everyone in the world will tell you, 'No, it can't be done.' Every time I hear that, I know I'm close to success."

"I can go back to when I was six years old. I was always getting in trouble for dreaming, and the things I got in trouble for dreaming then are the things I'm doing today."

"I love the flute because it's the one instrument in the world where you can feel your own breath. I can feel my breath with my fingers. It's as if I'm speaking from my soul; when I'm making a note, it's the closest thing to singing to me."

"To tell the truth, I think I could do anything on stage, but dance happens to be my medium. It's bliss. It's what I came to this planet for."

"Life isn't about the number of times you're knocked down, it's about the number of times you get back up."

"I believe in myself, believe in everything that's positive, so I don't let any negative energy come into my life to the best of my ability -- that's the best way to carry on. There are no limitations, no rules. If you believe it, you can do it. You can do anything . . . Nothing is impossible."

"You're out on stage, the music is blaring, the crowd is screaming, the lights are flashing, your heart is pumping, the sweat is flying, and it's the greatest feeling in the whole world."

"You can take as much as your mind can trick you into believing you can take. It proved to me that nothing could stop me. The most important thing is that you believe in yourself and keep on going."

"Think of the thing that gives you goose bumps, then do it!"

"Since I was a kid, I've been a dancer, and, of course, I'll always be a dancer till the day I die."

"I think it is important to keep challenging yourself. That's what keeps me going."

"It has always been my dream and ambition to introduce Irish dancing to the world."
