Michael Myers Mask for Halloween

A Michael Myers Mask or a Michael Jackson Mask

So how did we get from the ancient Celtics of Ireland, Scotland and Wales running around in scary Halloween costumes to the modern day kids running around in a Michael Myers mask or a Freddy Krueger fancy dress costume.

The answer is pretty straightforward, it is the power of media, movies and celebrities. Watch out this Halloween for Hannah Montana, the X-Men and Harry Potter joining the ranks of the favorites over recent years such as the already mentioned Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees and of course the most famous of them all Michael Myers who was the central character of the 1978 movie called, you guessed it 'Halloween.

Well I say the most famous, but that isn't strictly true because there is another Michael who was a real person and came very much to the front for Halloween in the year that he died. The Michael Jackson mask has become a big favourite since the year the most famous person on the planet died.

Don't forget that Thriller was the biggest selling album of all time and that the central theme of the video supporting Thriller was all about the living dead, zombies and ghouls, which couldn't get any closer to being the very essence of Halloween, so watch this space to see what happens.

Just in case you didn't know Freddy Krueger was the central character in 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and Jason Voorhees was the 'Friday 13th' mainstay, I expect you did but just in case.

They all had one thing in common and that was that they all went around slashing and killing as many people as they could, so perfect subjects for Halloween fancy dress costumes.

Haven't really worked out why Hanna Montana is a favorite Halloween character other than she has done some Halloween theme episodes and is extremely popular.

Harry Potter is a little easier to explain, at least his movies are about Wizards, witches some nasty characters and the battle of good against evil. Plus they have some pretty good Halloween type costumes in all the Harry Potter films.

So all this scary stuff does fit with the origins of Halloween and the time when the Celtic traditions of attempting to copy evil spirits and placate them by dressing up in ghoulish costumes used to take place on the 31st October, the day the boundaries between the living and dead were thought to dissolve.

Think I prefer the one from his Thriller days but this one is definitely more scary.

Michael Myers Mask versus Michael Jackson Mask

So this year saw the end of Michael Jackson the man but Michael Jackson the legend is sure to be set live on in history for evermore. Not forgetting that Michael Jackson's 'Thriller Video' contributed to the best selling album of all time and was of course all about Zombie's and the living dead, which as mentioned previously is the very essence of Halloween.

So is this year going to see more Michael Jackson's running around on the 31st October than ever before? The politically correct brigade that vilified Jackson in his latter years have sort of lost the focus of their out pourings because the man has gone and he went having been found innocent of any of the charges that were brought against him.

He certainly won't be brought under suspicion for any alleged misdemeanors again, so there really is no longer any reason for his popularity not to rise to the peaks he held before, that does happen of course when people realise there will be no more new stuff being made and there is much evidence emerging to say that this is exactly what is happening. His name is the 3rd most popular entry in the Internet search engines so far for 2009, which means there are millions upon million of people seeking information on the legend Michael Jackson, bit ironic really.

So I rest my case, this year I think the Michael Myers mask may have to accept second spot to the Michael Jackson mask and this may also prove to be the case in future years as Jacko's return to popularity gains momentum, the bad memories are forgotten and all that people associate Michael Jackson with again is his music and his celebrity status.

You can find out a little more about his musical offerings here where there is a Michael Jackson's this is it article.

So, swiftly changing subject, now the Movies

I have added a couple of what I thought were really scary movies from way back in the 70's, remember the original Halloween Part 1 came out in 1978 when I was a teenager and at that time there were some pretty scary films being premiered. They really knew how to scare you to death back then.

The first I added was the 'Suspiria Trailer', this was said to have included the most vicious murder scene ever and a poll of critics at Total Film named it as the 3rd greatest horror film of all-time, scared the 'you know what' out of me. See Wikipedia for a bit more information. It is basically about a witches coven that was set up in a dance school for teenagers and shows some pretty horrific scenes of how a lot of those teenagers met their end, the glass ceiling scene was particularly well done, but that's not in the trailer.

The second I added which a little better known is 'The Exorcist' starring Linda Blair, this was a really scary film from the seventies which anyone who knows about horror films will know.

What you may not know is that when the film was first released to all the cinemas around the country, there was a big hoo hah about how psychologically disturbing the film was and it was hyped up to the point that there was a public information announcement before each showing of the film telling you where you could go for help if you became disturbed and could not cope after watching the film.

Have to say it worked on me, I have never watched the film again since not even the trailer I just added for your information. Probably wouldn't think that it was particularly scary these days but why take the risk.
