Michelangelo's David

My favorite Decade - the first 10 years of the 16th Century
You must know I am crazy about history, and I am fascinated by art. I have read a lot about the Renaissance, I have been to Florence and I stood there, looking at Michelangelo's David.
And here we are - in the first ten years of the 16th century...
Florence in Italy
One of the important Italian cities in the 16th century

Italy in the 15th and 16th century consisted of many city republics which were dominated by families like the Medici in Florence or the Della Scala in Verona.
Florence - The Republic
A city state governed by the people
Since the second half of the 13th century the family of the Medici had been ruling Florence from behind the scene. They had supported many local artists, among them Michelangelo, whose full name was Michelangelo Buanarotti. But they had ruled with a heavy hand, and at the end of the 15th century the people of Florence decided to throw them out of the city. For a short time, Florence was in fact a republic, and during that time Michelangelo created the statue of David.
Michelangelo's David
Before the battle
This is David before his encounter with Goliath. The way he looks shows that he is certain of his victory. His athletic body is a beautiful sight, a celebration of the male body.
Michelangelo is said to have uttered rather negative remarks about the female body, and some art historians say, that he could not create a female body - he just created a male one with breasts.
David - created by Donatello
After the battle
This is David, sculptured by another famous Italien sculptor, Donatello. The big difference between his David and the one created by Michelangelo is, that Donatello's David is shown after the battle with Goliath.
Whereas Donatello's David is a slender young man with elegant clothes, Michelangelo's David is pure muscles. He really looks like a warrior going into battle.
Would you believe that Donatello's David killed the giant Goliath?
Do you like Michelangelo's David?
