Wow, this must have taken a lot of research. This is an amazing lens! I loved finding out more about Michelangelo's David. It is truly a masterpiece! Although that thing about his eyes not being centered? That scared me a little. Society really has told us that The David is perfect. The idea that he might not be is frightening.

It is right and fitting that such a great sculpture as this should have such a great lens. I was fortunate enough to visit the Michelangelo Studio in Cararra, Italy this year, where David was carved, and I saw another one - full size - standing there in the studio. It was quite a shock to see such a close replica and yet on inspection it was clearly not carved by Michelangelo. The gift he had is one which only comes around every 100 generations it seems. The nearest we have to it today is, I believe, Anna Chromy.

Love this lens! A most well-deserved purple star, congratulations!

However, I disagree that David is uncircumcised. Today circumcision removes the entire foreskin, but prior to about A.D. 140 the Hebrew circumcision removed only the tip of the foreskin. Research the bris milah v. the bris periah and you will see that Michelangelo correctly depicted David with a milah circumcision:

Absolutely awesome lens. However, the Michelangelo version is somewhat steroidal. You know, large head, no body fat, etc. Michelangelo was dreaming of the perfect man, which I doubt the real David was. I am so impressed however that you have amassed so much information about this subject. Blows my mind.

This is a fantastic lens. Is you could rate it twice, it's definitely worth 10 stars. I read a lot, read a lot more, thought I must be close to the end, and I wasn't even halfway. It's wonderful!

So many lenses of the day are barely 1/10th of the length. But this is how a lens should be.

What an amazing lens. I can see why it is featured. Inspiring to get me to Italy and to do more lenses.

BTW, I didn't see the refrigerator magnet series that I have. David, complete with a t shirt, worn jeans, Doc Martin boots, and other costume. He can be naked or in any stage of dress.

I love it that you can be both so reverent and irreverent about this on the same page!

    Thank you so much!

I enjoyed seeing all the posts on David and Michelangelo. You might want to put in some reference to Vasari's account of how they transported it to the Palazzo de Signoria after it was sculpted (it swung from a frame on wheels and the rope that held it was knotted in a novel way).

In the bodybuilding community, there are people that believe the Greek's statues were the perfect example of a good looking body and they would use calculators online that let them figure out what size they need to get based on their wrist size to reach that ideal. Good guide.

A restaurant in Seattle has a beautiful art photo in the women's rest room of David, shot from bottom up, showing an interesting angle between his legs, if you know what I mean. The photographer placed it in the woman's room for the women to enjoy and is looking for an idea for a similar photo for the men's room. If you have an idea, or what to know the address of the restaurant so you can visit this exciting photo, please contact me at the lens below.

    Absolutely awesome site!

I was blessed to be able to visit Italy and to see the David in person. You wait in a line until the magic moment when you make a 180 degree turn and then WHAM! you see it at the far end of a long hall.

More accurately than seeing it, you gasp and breath it in, which leaves you "in-spired" if you will. Just like the word 're-spire-ation' the air is charged by the energy from the 500-year-old statue as if it were a fresh flower generating oxygen.

    A wonderful site, Margaret!

What a fantastic lens. I have been to Florenece many times but until last September, never bothered to see David as I didn't see the attraction.

That's because I had become used to the copy in the Palazzio Vecchio and the tourist souvenirs.

When I did turn up at the Accademia I thought it was stunning and now understand what all the fuss was about. The girls seemed to enjoy looking at his bum as well as all the seats at the back were filled by females gazing up with awe.

Its quite a story- it took Michelangelo three years to sculpt David from start to finish, but it took eleven years of arguing to decide whether, and how, to clean him! The cleaning process was a high-stress, very worrying time. Many people were deathly afraid he would be damaged beyond repair, even using distilled water only!
  • Best-CD-Rates Feb 1, 2008 @ 11:48 am | delete

I've read that the reason David is such a great sculpture is because its perfectly symetrical. The Neck, arms, and legs are all the same circumference. Maybe that should be the goal of weightlifting considering what other people perceive to be beauty :)

An intellectually exhaustive lens. Besides a 5 star rating, I had to lensroll it because I surely need to return again and again. What a treatise on this artist's important work. In my opinion, you have set the standard for others to be compared with. Terrific work.

  • Vintage_Crow Aug 11, 2007 @ 5:54 am | delete
Excellent lens I can see now why it is ranked so highly. Oh and Lawrence, did you O'D' on the apple from the garden or what? If this is historical porn in your eyes, then at least they had superior production values than today!

Geeesh, call David porn and it all hogwash is quite a reach =)
  • Frankster Aug 8, 2007 @ 7:21 pm | delete
Note to Lawrence: A naked body is not always pornographic. Look at this artwork again and, yes, see the beauty of the body, but also see the mastery of the workmanship. Michelangelo was the artist that made me fall in love with art at 9 and become a sculptor at 48. A brilliant lens. 5 Stars/lensroll
  • Internet-Grandma Aug 6, 2007 @ 11:27 am | delete

    Great lens. 5 stars!
  • Margaret_Schaut Aug 2, 2007 @ 10:13 am | delete
Lawrence, your view is extremely harsh. From a modern, in-your-face tv culture, perhaps you are right. From an historical perspective, though, the Renaissance and its art was an incredible turning point. Michelangelo studied human anatomy on corpses to be realistic and accurate.
  • Lawrence Jul 31, 2007 @ 12:59 am | delete
I think this is such a bunch of hogwash. THis was a chance for a sculpture in a time when they indulged in seeing nude males to feed their sexual fantasy. And to create a lens "all you need is a slingshot" just shows that the nudity was the focus, not david. This is pornography in public

Hey--super great lens! I really enjoyed reading everything about David because I was there last month! It was really an impressive statue. It's sad that they have made this such a "sex" symbol all over Italy since he was such a man of God (boxers, aprons, etc.). 5*s Great job!

Margaret you have once again come up with an exquisite lens.Micheangelo painted for the Holy See and most of his works still adorn Vatican and in particular St. Peter. But just to echo what Jeanie had to say I feel a bit awkward with the display of nudity.
