Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) is the wife of the forty-fourth President of the United States, Barack Obama, and is the first African-American First Lady of the United States.

The comment immediately drew criticism from conservatives and others who wondered how the wife of a presidential candidate could have lived her entire adult life without being proud of her own country.
Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign later clarified the statement by saying, "Of course Michelle is proud of her country, which is why she and Barack talk constantly about how their story wouldn't be possible in any other nation on Earth. What she meant is that she's really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who've never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change."

- I'm reading this after the fact (the election is over) but I wanted to tell you that I did vote for Barack Obama and I'm very proud of that. I think that he and the First Lady are wonderful people and I'm so impressed the way they handle all of negative media about them. They're definitely a class act. We need to give them a chance to accomplish their goals which will not be easy, by any means.
