Michelle Obama Quotes

Comments from the would-be First Lady

No matter what the outcome is, we have to keep our eyes on the bigger picture. We need some kind of change. We can't cut off our noses to spite our faces.

You can't make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.

We want our children - and all children in this nation - to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them.

My piece of the American dream is a blessing hard won by those who came before me.

The Great Comment Controversy

The quote that caused the stir

In February 2008, Michelle Obama told a crowd of Barack supporters in Madison, Wisconsin: "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."

The comment immediately drew criticism from conservatives and others who wondered how the wife of a presidential candidate could have lived her entire adult life without being proud of her own country.

Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign later clarified the statement by saying, "Of course Michelle is proud of her country, which is why she and Barack talk constantly about how their story wouldn't be possible in any other nation on Earth. What she meant is that she's really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who've never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change."

Yes, I understood what she meant and think the whole thing was blown out of proportion

As a union organizer I have come in contact with many workers who have never felt hopeful about the future the way they do now, and many who have struggled their whole life to feel proud and accepted as Americans. It's not about being proud of history but proud of the now.

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Yes, and people who listened to the entire sentence and did not pick out a couple of words probably all agree.

Oh, yes and putting a whole life together, not just one phrase.

lisadh says:

It's hard to be taken literally all the time.

No, I think the campaign was just trying to put a spin on a remark that shows her true feelings

tdove says:

It's just another reason of many why I will not be voting for Obama.
