Fashions of Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama enjoys accessorizing with vintage brooches like many other first ladies did in the past. I personally think that this big green flower brooch really looks beautiful pinned on her bright yellow sleeveless (yes, sleeveless) dress. Michelle Obama seems to have quite a stash of flower pins, as she's been spotted wearing one on numerous occasions. Of course, flowers have been favorite women's fashion accessory this year in general. Flower bracelets, flower hair pins, flower pins, and flowers accenting shoes and bags have all been seen among the most trendsetting of fashionistas. 6/10/09 Up until now, Michelle Obama fashions were considered simple and elegant. But, what you see above is not a mirage. It's Michelle Obama visiting Westminster Abbey in London yesterday in a rather interesting getup. The tunic - with rows of appliqué ranging from flowers to what look like plastic leis to we don't even know what, paired with a checkered belt with a bright-purple buckle, worn over pants and under two cardigans in lavender and bright yellow - has caused the Daily Mail to dub her the "First Lady of flamboyance." It's unclear why Michelle decided to layer herself to the point of near suffocation. Maybe she was cold? But she wore less than that on Inauguration Day, when it was colder, so that seems unlikely.

So maybe Michelle Obama was just taking a risk and having fun with spring colors. Maybe it's an art project by one of the children she's visited and she's wearing it to be nice. Whatever her thought process, even the nearly perfect people of this world will wear eyebrow-raising outfits from time to time. We all make sartorial mistakes. Just think of your youth! Maybe you wore scrunchies every day. Or floral biker shorts with black-lace trim. Or those neon reflective sunglasses Jay tried (and failed) to bring back in an early episode of The City. So Michelle wore an unflattering tunic. She wore a charming Hussein Chalayan number the other day, also. And has worn innumerable lovely outfits in the past. Also, Michelle pays attention to what people say about her clothes. She quickly broke out the long sleeves after nearly everyone in Washington made a fuss over her bare arms. By tomorrow she'll probably have digested the headlines and chosen something splendid to wear, as usual. We do hope, however, that she eases up on the chunky waist belts. She looks divine without them. And the power of simplicity, as this outfit proves, must not be underestimated.

3/23/09. After Michelle Obama planted the White House vegetable garden with some kids, she talked to reporters about something far more interesting: her clothes. She said Barack tries to monitor her fashion purchases.

"He's always asking: 'Is that new? I haven't seen that before.' It's like, Why don't you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet."

She teasingly imitated him: "You didn't need any more shoes. The shoes you had on yesterday were fine. Why can't you just wear that for the rest of the presidency?"

Barack may not understand that there is no "need" in "fashion," but he redeemed himself. Take Michelle Obama's gray metallic belt:

"Barack calls it my 'Star Trek' belt," the first lady said in an interview this week. "He doesn't understand fashion."

Personal Note: Isn't it refreshing to have not only a First Lady, but a President that are so much like we are? I mean, don't most husbands try to monitor their wives' fashion purchases? Her saying "It's like, Why don't you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet." really made me laugh. Michelle Obama wore a simple black and white outfit by Isabel Toledo, and a cardigan by Azzedine Alaïa to meet with the Queen. Michelle appears to have kept her cardigan on for her meeting with the Queen, but removed it as soon as she left the palace and all its formalities. Her shoes were black pumps by Jimmy Choo. She did not wear a hat like was expected for her Queen meeting, but looked classy by wearing a double strand pearl necklace and pulling her hair halfway up in a classic bouffant.

Michelle Obama's signature style, like her upbringing, is modest. Chic and modern, Obama favors down-to-earth belted shifts and chunky pearls. She also shows off her shoulders and arms and often experiments with prints. Obama's flipped hair and modest ladylike attire suggest an updated Jackie-O look, which I guess could be considered a Michelle O look, too. While Hollywood stars dressed their best for Oscars Sunday, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama looked just as elegant for an event at the White House! Michelle Obama is set to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine's March issue.

The Washington Post reports that the First Lady will be the second in her position to be on the fashion magazine's cover, following Hillary Clinton's December 1998 cover.

In the Vogue cover shoot, Michelle Obama wears a stunning magenta dress by Jason Wu, the designer who made her one-shoulder white ball gown for inauguration night.

According to the paper, the First Lady is also photographed in a black Narciso Rodriguez gown inside of the issue. In the article, she tells the mag she is adjusting to life in the White House, saying she is still looking for a church to join and plans to take her daughters to school every morning.
