Vintage Michigan Maps

I have a love of gas station memorabilia and collectibles and I have blended that with a love of collecting Michigan road maps. From some quick research on the internet I found that there are a good number of numerous kinds of Michigan maps.

You can find gas station Michigan road maps, old Michigan railroad maps, Michigan plat maps for various areas, pre-1900s maps of Detroit, Geological maps, and a number of others. I've tried to organize them a bit in some searches below.

Why am I interested in old gas station Michigan Road Maps?

Might great-grandfather moved from Chicago to rural Michigan (Jones, Michigan to be exact) in answer to a newspaper ad to purchase a Mobiloil gas station franchise that sold Gargoyle gasoline (see picture above for logo). After both of my great-grandparents had passed, the family wanted to keep the station in the family and my parents purchased both the station and farm that went with it.

The station was strictly off-limits when I was a kid so, naturally, I explored it from basement to attic. It was probably heaven for anyone who collects gas station paraphernalia. Old signs for tobacco, Coca Cola, and oil. Since this was also what we could consider a convenience store nowadays there were displays for food items (the old prices were still attached to the shelves) as well.

One of the items that always drew attention was a Gargoyle Mobiloil lollipop sign that stood outside. I don't know what these get at antique shops or anything, but my folks sold it at a yard sale for maybe $50. Must have seen "sucker" stamped on their heads. Too bad this was before the internet and eBay. With a little research they would have had a better handle on the asking price (my quick research shows a value closer to the $200-$300 range).

There were tons of other items that I won't take the time to list here. I think I'll have to create another lens just for all of that. When it's completed, I'll throw a link to it from here.

Anyway, I have a love for Michigan maps and a love for gas station collectibles so that's how this page came about. I hope you enjoy it.

Does anyone use maps anymore?

With the technology of GPS do you even use a map?

Yes, it's still nice to see the big picture instead of a tiny screen.

No, road maps have gone the way of the Dodo.

Do you Save or Collect Michigan Maps

I have a handful of old Michigan state maps that I have saved over the years. They're tattered and worn, but it's neat to look back at them and see how roads have changed and how maps have also changed.

Do you have an old Michigan road map collection or are you just starting out? What's your most prized map?

That Shell map with the license plate background is SO Cool. I am looking for a 1943 Michigan road map. Do you have one for sale?

Yes.....my Grandfather collected Michigan State Maps and I was lucky enough to get this collection when he passed on. And ever since I've been trying to keep up the tradition....yet I've missed a few years (silly me). Now I'm in the process of trying to locate and purchase those missing years.
