What is auto insurance?
Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:
- Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
- Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
- Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.
Auto Insurance Coverages
- Bodily Injury (BI) Liability Coverage pays up to the coverage limits for damages due to injury or death of others in a vehicle accident for which you or the driver of your vehicle are legally responsible. It also pays your legal defense costs. This coverage is mandatory in Michigan.
- Property Damage (PD) Liability Coverage pays up to the coverage limits for another individual's vehicle or property that has been damaged in an accident for which you or the driver of your vehicle are legally responsible. This coverage is mandatory in Michigan.
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) provides unlimited medical benefits for you and your family members for injuries arising from an automobile accident. It also includes a "work loss" benefit that pays up to 85% of your gross wages for up to three years if your injury prevents you from working. This coverage is mandatory in Michigan.
- Property Protection Insurance (PPI) pays up to $1,000,000 for damage done to stationary property caused by a motor vehicle. This coverage is mandatory in Michigan.
- Unisured / Underinsured Motorists (UM / UIM) Coverage pays up to the coverage limits for pain and suffering that is not covered by medical, disability, and PIP.
- Unisured Motorists (UM) Coverage pays for bodily injury to you or your family resulting from the negligence of another driver who does not have insurance.
- Underinsured Motorists (UIM) Coverage pays for bodily injury to you or your family resulting from the negligence of another driver whose liability insurance limits are insufficient.
- Collision Coverage pays up to the Actual Cash Value for damage to your vehicle by a collision or rollover. This coverage is usually required if you have a vehicle loan or you lease your vehicle.
- Comprehensive Coverage pays for physical damage other than Collision. It pays up to the Actual Cash Value for damage to your vehicle resulting from theft, fire, vandalism, flooding, hail, or other perils except damage by a collision or overturning. It is usually required if you have a vehicle loan or you lease your vehicle.
- Rental Reimbursement Coverage pays up to a specified amount for rental vehicle charges while your vehicle is being repaired for damage covered under your policy. If you prefer not to cover the cost of renting a vehicle yourself and cannot be without a vehicle while your's is being repaired, you might consider this coverage.
- Towing and Labor Coverage pays for some of the costs incurred for services provided at the place of the breakdown or for towing to a repair shop. It covers the delivery of gas, oil, or a battery, but not the cost of these items. If you lock the keys on the vehicle or need a tire changed, this may also be covered. These services are often included in auto club memberships, which can result in unnecessary duplicate coverage.
Most auto policies are for six months or a year. Your insurance company should notify you by mail when it's time to renew the policy and to pay your premium.
