Amanda and Carrie, a.k.a. The Pink Tigers, are at it again! This is our third year walking!

This year the Michigan Three Day Breast Cancer Walk will be held September 26-28. We don't know where the walk is going to be yet--all we know is that our little feets will travel 60 miles over the course of 3 days.

Yep--that's a lot of walking!

I put this Lens together so our friends and families could keep up with our fundraising activities. Be sure to check back often as I'll be updating this page as the year progresses!

Fundraising Goal: $4400
Total Money Raised to Date: $4400

Thank you donors for helping us achieve our fundraising goals for 2008!

Photos From Michigan 2006 Breast Cancer Walk

In 2006, the walk started at Stoney Creek Metropark and ended at Metrobeach Metropark. This was our first 3-Day and we were totally blown away by the whole experience! It was a challenge but we're ready to do it all over again. We hope the weather is nice again this year!

"The people along the way cheering and giving us treats, the awesome number of souls involved with one cause - it was amazing. I never cried so much as over those three days. There are no words to describe the joy."
--Susan Strauss, walker, crew member, survivor

"The 3-Day experience is something you will never forget. It allows you to push your limits in many ways--endurance, committment, fundraising. If you can do this, you can do anything you set your mind to."
--Barbara Jo Kirshbaum, 3-Day Walker

I Walk Because I Can't Walk Away

Everybody has their own motivation for walking. I thought long and hard about doing the walk again this year. Raising $2200 is no easy task. And walking 60 miles is no picnic either.

So why would I go through all that again?

Well, last year during the walk I experienced something that I will NEVER forget.

On Day Two we passed a little old man sitting all alone in a lawn chair in his front yard right by the sidewalk. A sign he'd made out of a cardboard box was sitting at his feet. In scribbly black letters it said, "THANK YOU for walking-my wife died of breast cancer." He held a 8 x 10 picture of her on his lap and smiled at walkers as they passed by.

I still cry when I think about him!

I walk for all the people who's lives have been affected by breast cancer. I walk for the little old man.

I WALK BECAUSE I CAN'T WALK AWAY!

Comerica Park Here We Come
May 11th, May 25th, June 14th

Amanda and Carrie along with their cohorts will be selling food and drinks at a concession stand at Comerica Park. The Detroit Tigers (and every other team in MLB) designate a certain number of their concession stands to non-profit organizations. A portion of the profits made during the game are donated to your chosen organization.

--Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch

"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."

"Go as far as the eye can see, and when you get there, look farther."
--Dag Hammarskjöld

You do have a big heart and the inspiration you embody is in itself curative. The story about the little old man was touching. And the quotations from famous people lifted my spirits. I believe the heart holds the answers to all our human ills.

    AMERICA'S WOMEN

YOU ARE MARCHING TO STOP BREAST CANCER IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AND IT WILL NOT WORK. YOU THINK THAT YOUR 3-DAY MARCH WILL RAISE MONEY FOR STUDIES TO FIND A CURE FOR CANCER RIGHT?

    ASK YOURSELVES THESE QUESTIONS FIRST;

WHY DO WE KNOW SO LITTLE ABOUT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?
WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL DYING OF CANCER AFTER 50 YEARS OF RESEARCH?
WHY IS ONLY TREATMENT REMUNERATED AND NOT PREVENTION IN MEDICAL CARE?
WHAT PART DO THE FINANCIERS PLAY IN THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT?

FOR ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS GO HERE:

I was trying to find some info on how to have a fundraiser for our best friend. His wife has terminal cancer and has 6-12 months to live. They have 5 kids and 3 of them are under the age of 7 years old. I want to help them raise money for food and bills. They are not the type to ask for help, so I will do it for them.
I call around and email people but I get referred to another place and given a ph#, then the people there refer me to will refer me else where. I don't know where to start, who to turn to. Anyone who could help me, I would really appreciate it!!

Walking for cancer not only helps raise money for cancer research but is healthy for you as well.

You might think all Hugh Grant can do is star in romantic comedies like Love Actually, but you'd be wrong, he can also rock the sauce out of some pretty serious charity action.

Tips for First Time Walkers

I'll add to the list as I think of more tips!

  • Do not underestimate the importance of training. I can't emphasize that enough. Yes, this is just walking. But you're WALKING 60 MILES IN THREE DAYS. This is not something normal people do. Your body will need to practice.

  • Don't leave fundraising to the last minute. When the walk gets closer you need to be focusing on your training--not fundraising.

  • Buy Body Glide and USE IT. Especially on your feet.

  • Buy a good pair of walking shoes MONTHS before the walk and train in those.

  • Pack extra toilet paper! This will be especially handy to have when you wake up in the middle of the night to use the potty and they're ALL out of toilet paper!!
