How to Mic Guitar Amps and Drums

Guitar, bass, and keyboard all run directly into amps, but recording/amplifying drums and amps themselves requires a more complicated set-up. It is not, however, difficult to learn how to do.

Micing a Kick Drum:
- w/ front head: Stick a mic about an inch away.
- w/ hole in frint head: Put mic in hole as far as you can.
- w/ no front head: Put mic 5 to 9 inches in.
Snare:
Put mic aiming toward center of drum, with about three fingers height from rim of drum.
Toms:
Same as snare.

Micing a Guitar Amp:Put an SM-57 microphone right against the grill of the amp, not in the middle of the speaker but to the side.
