Mickey does Venice ?

I read that the Instituto Veneto has recently given a prize to a British economist John Kay who suggested that the current state of tourism in Venice could be saved by Mickey Mouse.This is not of course going to happen because of the proud loyalty of the Italian people. But lets look at the facts..
Venice is still sinking.The 70,000 residents appeal to the outside world for help quite often.We help them because Venice itself is the most beautiful city in the World. Just 70,000 people canot themselves hope to save their city- that's not practical.
There are of course two major problems in Venice - the usual problem of local people disliking invasion by millions of tourists and the hordes of rip-off artists coming into their city to rip off the tourists.
There are other problems too - the smell from the lagoon is horrid in Summer - Venice was built to house a small medieval population and its systems just cannot cope with millions of tourists ( and the things they leave behind them ..).

Disney has done a wonderful job on their Tokyo theme park Disneysea which has an almost identical problem with its waste from tourists.
Many years of handling masses of tourists on a daily basis makes Disney a sensible idea for managing Venice.
At the moment Venice is crowded with hustlers,pickpockets,a large number of other undesirables and has a population that really do not want visitors (except for the hoteliers and restaurants and expensive gift stores)

Disney at least gives value for money in a safe friendly environment which Venice sadly does not.
Expensive hotels,gift stores selling poor quality souvenirs at ripoff prices and restaurants that hustle tourists out the instant they finish their equally expensive food ,coffee or drinks.
The small population seems to just want the money from the tourists but not their presence. Mr Kay has very valid points from my own experience of Venice.
You might want to think of this - there are VERY few public seats in Venice.They do not want you to sit and enjoy the view or have a rest from the heat of Summer. (Actually there were many seats until visitors from Eastern Europe appeared by the coachload and just brought sandwiches and did not spend money in the cafes or gift shops - the City Father had the seats removed to dissuade them from coming)

The Walt Disney Company knows how to treat its guests and what their needs and wants are.
The Burghers of Venice could take a number of lessons from Disney (and for goodness sake build some public toilets !)

I actually do NOT think Disney should run Venice.
My view is that Venice cannot bumble along on it reputation and has some serious shortcoming vis-a-vis tourism.

The good Burghers of Venice I know there is an official title but I forget ...) should club together and visit Disneyworld to see how a great theme park is properly run (yes I KNOW Venice is not a theme park but it acts like one !)
They would discover that tourists want :
Good Clean Toilets
Reasonable Prices
Friendly Service
Park Benches
Good Security
Less beggars
Good bistro-style food
Facilities for children
Gondolier Trips at reasonable fees
Guides who inform guests instead of just leading punters to the gift store that pays them the best commission.
Medium Price Clean hotels
A Restaurant grading system

and quite a lot more.

Having said all that I have a confession to make...
Venice is my FAVOURITE City in the World !
(but then I have no sense of smell at all ..)
