Mickey Mantle: A Childhood Hero

Like millions of other baby boomer young boys, Mickey Mantle was my childhood hero. A large poster of "The Mick" was over my bed.

I owe my lifelong love of the New York Yankees to my Dad, and to a lesser extent to Mickey Mantle. I remember seeing Mantle live on NBC's "Game of the Week"

Mantle was at the end of his career and was making a "cameo" appearance in the All-Star Game at the Astrodome in Houston. Mickey got in as a pinch hitter towards the end of the game.  Really, this is all me and my Dad were waiting for. Mantle worked the count to 3 and 2.

I remember my Dad saying, "Mantle is the best 3 ball, 2 strike hitter in the game." Alas, this time he struck out, but it's a moment with my Dad that I'll always treasure.

I'm sure countless other Mickey Mantle fans have similair memories. I'd like to hear yours.

Three reasons to love Mickey Mantle

Reason #1 Mickey Mantle was a gifted athlete who could run, throw, hit, hit with power, and field. If a player can excel at all five of these area of baseball, he is generally considered a superstar. Mickey Mantle excelled in all five areas.

Reason #2 Mantle was a modest superstar. When asked how he would like to be remembered, Mickey replied simply that he would like to be remembered as, "a great teammate". Those word now adorn his Hall of Fame plaque.

Reason #3 Though Mickey Mantle was one of the most naturally gifted athletes to ever don a uniform of any sport, he often played taped from his waist to his ankles.

Rival Carl Yastrzemski once said that if Mantle was truly healthy he would "hit 80" homers a year.

I have several Mickey stories, but I will share my earliest memory of him.
I was 6 years old and at batting practice. My parents had seats on the first base line right by the tarp. Mickey was just tossing the ball around. My younger brother and I began waving to him and cheering him. He removed his cap and smiled at us. The sun was behind him and it lit up his blonde hair like a halo. I swear I thought I had seen a god!
