Marketing Genius: Kay Kamen
Product marketing was still a relatively new field when Walt Disney selected salesman Herman "Kay" Kamen to lead Disney character merchandising in 1932. Kamen was best known as a super-salesman, agressively promoting and selling children's toys and games as well as food and clothing. His campaigns integrated every sales techniques available at the time, including print, radio, and direct mail. He was especially adept at cross-promotions -- that is, using multiple media and products to reinforce the brand.When Kamen came on board with the Disney Company in 1933, he made sweeping changes in the company's licensing agreements with manufacturers and instituted strict standards for quality. The first Mickey Mouse watch, produced by the Ingersoll-Waterbury Clock Company, was one of his most lucrative deals. Introduced and featured at the Chicago "Century of Progress" World's Fair in 1933, the Mickey Mouse watch is credited as saving Ingersoll from bankruptcy. Considering that 1933 is recognized as the worst year of the Great Depression, this was an amazing achievement.

Your Favorite Mickey Mouse Watch
Here are three of Mickey Mouse watches. I've had others, but these are the one I still have in my jewelry box. The Sorcerer Mickey is my favorite! As you can probably tell by the cracked crystal, it is the one I wear most. On our next trip to Disney World, I'll be checking out the new watches.
