What is Micr Toner? What You need to know!

MICR Toner or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition is a specially formulated toner that includes iron oxide which makes it magnetic. Most banks require that the line at the bottom of your checks is printed using a MICR font with magnetic MICR Toner so it can be read quickly and accurately by their check scanners.

So, if you have any reason to print your own checks, you need MICR toner in order accomplish that.

Pictured is an example of a Compatible MICR toner cartridge.

What Do I need to Print Checks?

1. Check Printing Software
2. Use a MICR Font
3. Use special safety paper
4. HP or Lexmark Laser Printer
5. MICR Toner

Who Needs MICR Toner?

Basically, anyone who wants to print checks on their own laser printer absolutely needs MICR toner.

The reason for this is that there are certain federal requirements that are necessary to print checks.

** The ink needs to be magnetic.

** The MICR font needs to be to spec.

When shopping for the right toner, this is something to keep in mind.

How to Purchase MICR Toner

Here are some things to keep in mind before you purchase MICR toner.
  • Is the MICR toner compatible with your printer?
  • What kinds of checks do you want to print?
  • Do you need Lexmark, HP, or another company's MICR toner?
  • Is the MICR font to spec and is it truly magnetic?

MICR Toner - is your printer compatible?

Banks have special MICR printing machines. In order to print checks at home or at your business, it isn't necessary to buy a special machine. All you need is a laser printer. Yes, I know, there ARE MICR inkjet printers. You're going to have to trust me on this one, but you should use a laser printer.

But is your printer compatible?

Before you go through all the trouble of buying check printing software, check paper, or a MICR font, you need to make sure there is a MICR Toner available for your printer. MICR Toner is available for most Hewlett Packard some Lexmark printers. MICR Toner for Brother, Canon, or any other major brand is not readily available. Make sure the you can find a MICR Toner cartridge for your printer

Pictured here is the HP C7115X MICR Toner Cartridge Compatible which works with the HP Laserjet 1000, Laserjet 1200, Laserjet 1220, Laserjet 3300 and the Laserjet 3380.

One of the newest MICR cartridges available works with the HP P2015, P2014, and the M2727. HP Q7553 MICR Toner

What Do You Really Need to Print MICR?

Yes, it is important to use MICR toner in order to be able to print that MICR line at the bottom of your check. But what else do you need?
  1. Check Printing Software - I recommend Versa Check
  2. MICR Fonts - MICR actually refers to a type of font that meets the ANSI and ABA banking standard requirements. You need to make sure the MICR font you use is the right kind.
  3. Printer - there are special MICR printers you can buy. But, if you don't want to purchase something that specialized, you can use a laser printer. Just make sure the MICR Toner is available for your printer.
  4. Magnetic Ink - it is a federal requirement that MICR printing is done with special ink. If you buy special MICR toner cartridges, you'll know that the ink meets these requirements. These cartridges contain iron oxide which will make it magnetic.
  5. Safety paper - If you print your own checks at home or for your business, don't forget the special safety paper. You can find Special Check Paper Here

Which MICR Toner to choose?

Remember that MICR toner needs to meet certain requirements. If you want to use your laser printer, the printers need to be MICR enabled.

HP MICR toner and Lexmark MICR toner are used often because HP and Lexmark laser printers are pretty common.

Just to be safe, check to make sure which printer you have before you purchase the toner.
