Quality, not quantity.
They invade your space.
They pop over.
They pop under.
They blink and flash and some even TALK.
Web advertising is everywhere, and it's not going to disappear any time soon.
But it CAN be less invasive.
What can you do to make sure your Web page advertising doesn't drive people away?
Let's compare, shall we?
I say: Size matters.
These days, it is all about getting everything in the smallest, most convenient form. Compare the Walkman of the 90s -- revolutionary in its time -- to the MP3 players of today. Televisions once took several people to move, and can now practically be worn on the wrist. We moved from boxy desktop to streamlined tower PCs to laptops that are now more slim than a 3-ring binder.
Look at the evolution of the cell phone, for example. Each advance in technology creates a more powerful piece of equipment that does more, faster, better ... in a SMALLER package.
Why, then, are we still posting hideous 468x60 pixel chunks of data and pretending that they don't get completely ignored? One glance at that familiar shape and people automatically think "ad" and skip it anyway.
Let's look at some more realistic sizes:
120x60 - nice and compact
125x125 - has its merits, stands out in a rectangle world
234x60 - a move in the right direction, the half banner is worth a look
120x90 - for when you just can't squeeze it into 120x60
the old standard - doesn't this look obscenely large and common, now?
I'm using Snapfish as my example site as they offer a great selection of sizes for their affiliates to choose from -- including some horrendously large options I will not appall you with here.
Banner or Bar?
Let's see YOUR bar!
You'll be needin' to contact me with your image URL (photobucket preferred) and the Squidoo lens, lensmaster or group URL you want it linked to.
Make it Squidpretty enough for a Princess!
Bad example. Had to skew it. Make yours 88x31 please!!
