Microscopes in Action

Every young child needs to the opportunity to explore the natural world with a microscope. In this lens we'll look at why microscopes are important and discover that you can choose a microscope to fit any need or budget.

What you need to know about microscopes

Since they were first made at the dawn of the 17th century, microscopes have opened a whole new world waiting to be discovered. From a piece of fabric to a drop of water from a nearby stream, the microscope allows you to explore things at a level the un-aided eye cannot see. In fact, our modern understanding of the larger world would be impossible if it weren't for microscopes. Medicine, science, biology and others would still be in the Dark Ages; and by default, so would we.

However, don't be fooled, microscopes are not just for white-coated scientists working in an austere research lab, but for anyone who has the slightest curiosity and can appreciate seeing things in a new and unexpected ways.

Quality and price varies greatly, but there is sure to be a model that fits within any budget. Look for a microscope that fits your needs. Are you using it for school, work, or pleasure? The first thing you will look for is the magnification the microscope provides. This is listed a number followed by the letter 'x'. For example, if it magnifies things to 100 times their normal size it will say 100X. The bigger that number, the more detail you will be able to see. Next, look at the light source. If you will be looking at solid objects at relatively low magnification, then a light from above will do; otherwise you will need a light from below that will shine through slide.

There are other considerations, but for hobbyists it comes down to preference. Eyepieces, number of lenses, how adjustments are made, and can they be hooked up to a computer are some things to keep in mind. Though it can take time, the number of models and options available means the right microscope is out there.

Even though we are now in the 21st century, microscopes are still useful - not to mention gaining in popularity. If it's your first microscope don't be surprised if you are soon running around outside looking for things that can be examined. A whole new world awaits!
