What Is Bing? (Courtesy : Wikipedia)

Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search) is the current web search engine (advertised as a "decision engine") from Microsoft. Bing was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009 at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego. It went fully online on June 3, 2009, with a preview version released on June 1, 2009.

Notable changes include the listing of search suggestions as queries are entered and a list of related searches (called "Explorer pane") based on semantic technology from Powerset that Microsoft purchased in 2008. Bing is the 3rd largest search engine on the web by query volume, at 3.16%, after its competitor Google at 85.35% and Yahoo at 6.15%, according to Net Applications.

On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search.Microsoft and Yahoo seal web deal.

Image Search Comparison

Google Vs Bing

I personally love the image search capabilities offered by Bing. I tried searching for 'Firefox logos' and Bing gave me the above results. I have just included the first few results of the first two rows.

Google, on the other hand, returned one image which definitely didn't look like a Firefox logo! I have blurred that part of the image below.

Bing Image search also allows you to view the picture in different sizes. Once you click on a picture of your choice, you don't have to ever go back because you can actually scroll the list of search results at the side of the page.

I love the way in which they arrange the images in a single page (pictures load as you scroll down) which eliminates the need of going to multiple pages!

Bing Features

Bing Travel

Bing travel is powered by the popular Farecast technology. Using this the users are able to view low and cheap air fares, plus book hotel reservations. According to a study conducted by Time magazine, Farecast returned more than 75% accuracy rate for searches and users were able to save an average of $55 off their airfare.

Shopping

All the important information required by a shopper is put right on top of the decision engine.

Other features

It also includes optimized search for health related topics and local news.

Bing Maps are proving highly useful for school kids and their projects (as I saw from some tweets). They provide an aerial view of earth showing 3D images of cities and places.

Bing also has teamed up with Twitter and Facebook to provide user's updates along with search results.

Bing Translator tool allows translation between different languages. It allows automatic transation of text and web pages.

What's In A Name?

The Reason Behind Naming Their Search Engine 'Bing'.

Microsoft spokesmen have said that the name was specially chosen so that it could easily be turned into a verb. The hope is that 'Bing it' becomes as common a phrase as 'Google it' is currently.

Success Rate

How successful is Bing so far?

The site is being called a success right now, since it has taken up about 10% (9.64% in August 2009) of the search engine market within a week of launch. Keep in mind that Google's market share is over 80 percent (80.08% to be exact).

Some of this could be attributed to MS making Bing the default search engine on Internet Explorer.

Another factor for its popularity might be the massive advertising that is being unleashed in the US to tell the common man about the site. So far so good!

Update : In September 2009, Bing showed its first decline in share percentage since its release in June 2009.

Stats - 2009

July - 8.9%
August - 9.64%
September - 8.51%
October - 8.86%
November - 10.3%
December - 10.7%

Security Efforts

A series of online public service announcements (PSAs) are being published on the Bing search engine. These ads help to warn searchers about online scams. When you enter a keyword, the scams and security issues concerned will appear on top of the search results.

This has been launched by Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) in conjunction with the Federal Trade Commission, the United States Postal Inspection Service and Western Union.

Search Results

How Good Are The Search Results As Compared To Google?

Try searching for the book 'The 65 Lakh Heist'. Results -

1. Returned same set of results as Google, but the ordering looked more sensible.
2. Newspaper reviews of the book came up early.
3. Wikipedia entry is on the first page.
4. The publisher's site is on the first page too.

Google's first result is a link to an online bookstore selling the book. The second is to a blog that ran a review of the book. The actual publisher's site comes up only somewhere on the second page.

The User Interface

How User Friendly is Bing?

Bing has some dynamic programming that make the site easier to use.

1. Hovering the mouse to the right of the page pops up a preview of relevant text in the page.
2. The 'Images' tab of the results also looks less cluttered than Google. There's also an added advantage of filtering results based on size, colour, layout etc.

How To Get Your Website Noticed By Bing?

Website Optimization for Bing

1. By laying more emphasis on title tags

Bing places more importance on the title tags as compared to Google.

2. More the text, the better

Unlike Google, Bing places a lot of importance to the amount of content you have in your site. It's preferable to have a minimum of 300 words in your site for Bing to notice it.

3. Outbound links are ok

Bing doesn't seem to mind one having a lot of outbound links in their website. Google thinks otherwise.

4. Backlinks help

Google recommends backlinks to your site to boost your page ranking. So does Bing.

5. Older the domain, the better

Just to get a higher ranking on Bing.
