Microsoft Access Lens

Ranked #31,576 in Computers & Electronics, #577,453 overall

This lens is devoted to Microsoft Access versions 2000 through 2007 and related Office 2007 servers. Much of the original content of this lens will be the result of updating my Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2003 book to Access 2007. The new book will be the 12th member of QUE's Special Edition Using Microsoft Access series.

The lens also includes entries from Microsoft's "A discussion of what's new in Access 2007" blog that give folks who don't have a copy of Beta 2 a chance to preview new Access 2007 features. The lens will include information about Microsoft Office Live that's related to Access 2007.

It's Official - The Next Version is Microsoft Office Access 2007
Microsoft announced on February 15, 2006 that the (beta) product formerly known as "Office 12" will release as the "2007 Microsoft Office system."

Office 2007 will come in seven (count 'em, 7) flavors: Basic, Home and Student, Standard, Small Business, Professional, Professional Plus, and Enterprise editions. Click here to compare the features of each edition and here for estimated retail prices (ERPs). The Basic edition is available only with new computers (from OEMs), but anyone can purchase the $149 Home and Student edition. Only Professional and higher versions include Access 2007, which you can buy as an individual suite member for $229 or upgrade for $109.

Business Week's Jay Green says that Microsoft "... is targeting late September or October for product completion, with general availability to customers shortly thereafter." I'm betting that "general availability to customers" will occur in early 2007.

Microsoft dropped the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for "Office 12" client technical beta testers earlier this month. (The NDA applies to "Office 12" servers, such as SharePoint and Groove.) Ed Bott's ZDNet blog entry gives the details of the Byzantine process involved in dropping the client-side NDA. As I mentioned in an earlier version of the introduction, Ed prodded the Office team to remove an NDA which wasn't applied equally to all members of the press (and bloggers).

This means I'll be able to post my experiences with Access 2007 as I'm updating the manuscript for QUE's Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2007. Stay tuned.

Office 12 Beta Brings UI Changes
eWeek's David Coursey says "The Beta 1 versions of Microsoft Word and Outlook are decent enough, but the real Office 12 story will lie on the server side."
Face-to-Face with Office 12's Look and Feel
eWeek's David Coursey takes a first look at the beta 1 version of Office 12 and concludes: "Microsoft looks to be breaking new ground with Office 12's interface. Some things look very good, such as the fresh features in PowerPoint and Access, while others may need to go back to the drawing board. But isn't that the idea of a Beta test version anyway?"
