Instead of using 40 or 50 minutes to complete a math assignment while listening to music, responding to chat messages and answering phone calls, try this strategy. Studying in 20-minute blocks may be a more efficient solution. Following each study block take a five minute break to relax, make a quick phone call, answer chat messages or engage in another activity of your choosing. Gradually, your focus will extend past the 20-minute mark. Studying for 30 - 45 minutes might be a goal to work towards as your ability to focus increases. The goal is to stay focused on your homework. You can accomplish a lot more in 20 minutes of focused time than you can in 40 minutes of unfocused time filled with continued distractions.
Although there are a variety of study strategies designed to beat procrastination, prepare for tests and remember information the first step is to create a consistent study space. With an effective study space and a commitment to studying "smarter" not harder your ability to achieve in school will improve. The added benefit to studying smarter is a dramatic increase in the amount of time you can create for more enjoyable activities.
