Don't Fall for Their Games - err Illegal tactics
Midland Credit Management buys old debts in bulk and then abuses consumers through illegal tactics to get them to pay debts that they are not entitled to collect in any way but intimidation.
Many times they will hire outside collection agencies such as FBCS Collections to work the accounts before they attempt to abuse the court system and arbitration to try to collect.
These are common tactics of Junk Debt Buyers.

I fought off MCM a year ago. Now it will be easy to get them off my credit report. To all here who have been contacted by any collectors...do not talk to your collectors. Learn your rights! You do not have to pay junk debt ....educate yourself. Check your state statutes for debts that "expire" and too old to collect on. This article is great. Spread the word!

Midland buys junk debts, most of which the statute of limitations is expired. They have no proof that you owe the money. They purchased three accounts of mine from 7 years ago. I was able to get them deleted by sending letters asking them to validate the debts, which they could not do. According to the Fair credit reporting act, they have 30 days to answer you. When I asked for validation the first letter they sent me said that they wanted to help settle the dispute and asked me to send them any reciepts or proof that I had to bsck my claim. I sent them another letter detailing that it was not my responsibility to prove; it was theirs. Of coursc, they could not prove it and did not respond to my letter. I sent copies of everything I had sent to them to each of the three credit bureaus detailing my attempts to have the debts validated and within 30 days all three were removed from my credit report. Just remember, THEY NEED TO PROVE IT, HAVE THEM VALIDATE BEFORE YOU PAY AT ALL.

Midland employs swindlers and con artists, but you have a lot more leverage over them than you may think. They are pissed at me because I wont pay them what they want, and I won't pay above 40 percent of the total I owe. Sure, they can bully me. Im smarter than them, and sooner or later they will get tired of arguing with me and accept my terms. Just wait and see lol. Hope you all have better luck too.

I disputed 2 separate debts on all three of my credit report that Midland had place on them. Both debts were the same amount with two different account numbers. To top it off they were both over 7 years old. As soon as the credit bureaus contacted Midland for clarification Midland immediately updated the opening date of the account to reflect 2008. In my opinion this is not bad business but illegal.

I was contacted by Midland. They kept calling and sending letters. They finally sent a letter stating that they were going to sue me. They phoned the same day I received the letter. Come to find out they had the wrong person. Don't they check to make sure they have the right person, before threatening them? Well, they better start, for I just may sue them for harrassment.

Please help...I got Midland to stop calling but they keep mailing about a debt that is over 5 years old. I told them it was past the statue of limitations and they couldn't collect.
They lied and told me a payment was made in 2006 and the clock started anew. They told me they are keeping it on my credit report. When I asked for proof of this payment they told me they dont have to provide it.
What can I do??? This is messing up my credit report because of their lying.
thanks,
Jon

I had a call out of the blue from MCM - their agent called Mallory. She refused to repeat information when I said I didn't understand. It was about an account taken out by someone with the same name as me who had lived in a nearby town. She told me they had put a bad notice on my credit report and I had just better check it. She then asked for my social security number and birthdate. When I said I wasn't going to give that to her she riduled me and said with that attitude she wasn't inclined to offer me a settlement. I felt her tone was belittling, and threatening. She hung up on me when I was trying to get her company's phone number and address.
I ran my credit report and they had put a bad item on Experian but not on TransUnion. I sent MCM a letter by certified mail return receipt requested stating that I disputed the debt and asking for validation of the debt within 30 days. They have not replied within the 30 days. I still await Experian's response to my dispute of the item.

They are trying to come after me on a 21 year old debt that was taken care of by a Bankruptcy back in 1987. What a bunch of slime balls-Not only has it been discharged, but the Statute of Limitations is only about 17 years over due. I am waiting to see their response to my correspondance with them, I told them 1 more letter from them and my name will be above their door

Some info- I work in the mtg. business and deal with collection agencies on occassion. If you find something on your credit report, you can call credco, which is a company I use to pull my credit reports with. If a company such as Midland appears on credit and you don't know why, call credco at 800-435-5661, listen to the prompts and tell them your a consumer looking for the phone number to contact ex. Midland. By statute a collection or charge off account should "fall off" your credit report 7 yrs after the last activity date. If your credit is crap and you want to clean it up, you can call the collection companies and ask them to settle your account. You will obviously need money to do this and expect they can go to 1/2 the amount you owe. Remember most of the charges by that point are overdue fees and interest. Hope this helps some people.

Midland has reported late payments consistently over the last year on a debt for Fingerhut Credit Advantage (a crappy catalog sales company apparently) and has driven my FICO score into the ground making it difficult for me to get a VA approved mortgage. I have never purchased anything from Fingerhut and have disputed the debt. It is apparent that they specialize in ruining your credit rating as an extortion tactic . I guess they hope I'll just pay them off rather than fight it. If your are tempted to pay these bottom feeders just remember that every cent they collect keeps them in business. This is the financial equivalent of a schoolyard bully, don't give in!!!
