The Mighty Mouse Cartoon

Mighty Mouse was another one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. I actually enjoyed cartoons like Mighty Mouse, Underdog and Rocky and Bullwinkle more than I did the Loony Tunes or even Tom and Jerry. Although it was in reruns to me it was brand new, and that's the same way it is for children (Even some of us grown ones) today.

The Mighty Mouse character was originally created by Izzy Klein as Superfly, a house fly with super powers. Paul Terry, head of the studio, decided to change him into a mouse. When the mouse made his first appearance in 1942 in The Mouse of Tomorrow he was called Super Mouse. When Terry found out that a comic book character had the same name he changed the name of his mouse to Mighty Mouse.

Mighty Mouse made some costume changes over time. In the early days his costume was blue, but later it was changed to yellow, throughout his "career" his cape and shoes were red.

Interesting Things About Mighty Mouse

Mighty Mouse was the most popular cartoon that Terrytoons ever produced. In 1955 Terrytoons was sold to CBS who was soon airing it as The Mighty Mouse Playhouse.

The voice of Mighty Mouse was provided by Roy Halee, but in some of the later cartoons the voice was that of Tom Morrison.

Mighty Mouse's temperament softened over the years. In the beginning the mouse was a merciless fighter who would dish out a lot of beating to his enemies. Over the years he became less ruthless. His main enemy was Oil Can Harry

Mighty Mouse's girlfriend in the cartoon was Pearl Pureheart, however, did you know that in the comic book (195s to 1960s) version his girlfriend was Mitzi?

When Mighty Mouse was called into action to fight evil he would sing out, Here I come to save the day! in an operatic voice.

Mighty Mouse's hometown was Mouseville.

Mighty Mouse Villains

The Battles of Cat and Mice

The main arch-villain in the Mighty Mouse cartoons was Oil Can Harry. He battled many other enemies, but most of them showed up in only 1 or 2 episodes.

Mighty Mouse usually fought cat villains, but in one episode he was actually cheered on by the cats as well as the mice. In The Green Line a town's main street was divided into two sides by a green line running down the center of the road. The mice stayed on one side of the street and the cats on the other.

In The Green Line, Satan in the form of a cat, suddenly appears and begins playing tricks on the cats and mice to cause them to start fighting. Mighty Mouse comes in to fight with the Satan cat and, of course, when he wins the battle the fighting between the cats and mice ceases and everyone cheers for the mouse hero.
