More Than a Headache

Migraine is an often misunderstood disease. It is not a headache, but a whole-body disease which may not even include a headache. A neurological disease, migraine can make it difficult to follow through on daily activities and can even increase your chances of having a stroke. If you do not have migraine attacks, you may be tempted to compare it to your worst headache, but there is much more to the picture than that.

Migraine runs in my family, as it often does. Compared to the options available to my Grandfather and mother, I am very lucky. Research has allowed for the development of a new class of drugs for the treatment of migraine. I'm so grateful.

Having dealt with migraine for many years, I've gathered quite a bit of information. I've tried just about everything from preventative drugs to special diets and biofeedback. Cured? No. I'm still living with Migraine, but I know I am not alone. Read on for a summary of resources and stories about migraine. I hope this will help you in your own search.

Sources of Information on Migraine

National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke
Reliable information on Migraine Disease including the following: "For many years, scientists believed that migraines were linked to the dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the head. Investigators now believe that migraine is caused by inherited abnormalities in genes that control the activities of certain cell populations in the brain."
Beyond the Pain of Migraine
This article included on About.com, talks about the link between depression and Migraine. Here is an interesting quote they have included from a Dutch study: ". . . Migraine is not just a headache. The problem is that Migraine sufferers also have difficulty in managing everyday affairs, and that there are problems in social and emotional functioning that don't necessarily get picked up when doctors talk to patients about their headache histories." Check out the article for very good information on the effects of Migraine on everyday life.
Migraine Information Center from About.com
From "About.com", this is a very comprehensive and well organized gathering of information on Migraine. It begins with, "Migraines aren't 'just bad headaches.' Migraine is a genetic neurological disease that requires special treatment. It is, however a disease that we can control. One key to Migraine management is learning about it."

About njg

Though I am still a Northwesterner at heart (I lived in Oregon for 20 years), I now make my home in beautiful, historic, semi-rural New England. Not far from Boston, I am able to partake of big city life, as well. I do love the Northeast, but still miss the Northwest. I moved here for love, so I am staying.

I earned a Master's degree in art with a concentration in drawing and have taught art at the university and college level as well as to young children and seniors. My teaching style is one which focuses on guidance and support as well as perfection of technique. One of my passions is helping people see things in new ways.

After noticing a huge need, I also spent many years raising money as a professional, for both the arts and for higher education. Since moving to New England I have returned to my roots and enjoy sharing my creativity with others as a high-end floral designer, window box/garden stylist and artist.
