Migratory Birds Are Both Wild and Predictable Signs of the Season!
Along with armies of yellow school buses and unmistakable fall fragrances, migratory birds are on the wing.
Migratory birds contribute to the moods I attach to every season. In spring the wild birds make life more congenial. More, hospitable, somehow.
I'd like, here, to give a notice to migratory birds whose bravery must play some little part in the instinct for travel. I wonder if they must not feel the adventure of it all. Or, if maybe some of them take pride in gaining access to imperial heights. Since I'm among the non-migratory birds, it appears to me as no small feat.

This picturesque show of migratory birds photographed in Spain, in September 2010, includes a dramatic crescent Moon and the planet Venus, on the far right. Birds are easy to see beneath the moon. Can you also see them on the left, "posed" in front of clouds during sunset against a deep blue sky.
NASA's APOD featured this picture on September 15, and said, "Very soon after this picture was taken, however, the birds passed by, the storm ended, and Venus and the Moon set. The Moon and Venus have now separated, although Venus will remain visible at sunset for the rest of this month."

* Canada goose
In 2010, The United States, Canada and Mexico made their cooperation official. For the sake of bird species they share, bird conservation experts from all 3 countries work together to provide stats and condition information.
"The United States, Canada, and Mexico share 882 native land bird species, more than one-third of which depend substantially on all three countries each year. The (participants') report identifies 148 bird species in need of immediate conservation attention because of their highly threatened and declining populations and the threats they face," according to USFWS.
These are the days when Birds come back -
A very few - a Bird or two -
To take a backward look.
These are the days when skies resume
The old - old sophistries of June -
A blue and gold mistake.
Oh fraud that cannot cheat the Bee -
Almost thy plausibility
Induces my belief.
Till ranks of seeds their witness bear -
And softly thro' the altered air
Hurries a timid leaf.
- from the poem by Emily Dickinson
Migratory Bobolinks ~ A Bird Emily Dickinson Made Famous

The Missouri Department of Conservation is featuring the little bird with, "literary fame because of frequent mentions in the works of famed poet Emily Dickinson."
In one poem Dickinson uses the "brave bobolink" as an inspiration for letting go of cherished surroundings.
No Bobolink - reverse His Singing
When the only Tree
Ever He minded occupying
By the Farmer be -
Clove to the Root -
His Spacious Future -
Best Horizon - gone -
Whose Music be His
Only Anodyne -
Brave Bobolink -
10,000 Migratory Birds Stunned & Paralyzed by New York's 9/11 Light Show
National Audubon Society: "Federal Law Protects Migratory Birds"

In an effort to draw attention to side effects not planned, Animal Planet monitors the conditions surrounding migratory birds.
A dramatic incident for migratory birds took place this year when New York held its 9/11 memorial events.
"This year, more than 10,000 birds flew into the beams and got trapped, unable to fly away," says a blog by The Discovery Chanel and Animal Planet.

Approximately 1800 of world's 10,000 bird species are long-distance migrants.
Wikipedia says: "Bird migration is the regular seasonal journey undertaken by many species of birds. Bird movements include those made in response to changes in food availability, habitat or weather. These however are usually irregular or in only one direction and are termed variously as nomadism, invasions, dispersal or irruptions. Migration is marked by its annual seasonality. In contrast, birds that are non-migratory are said to be resident or sedentary."The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 made it illegal to hunt and kill migratory birds outside licensing procedures. This treaty implemented the 1916 Convention between the U.S. and Great Britain (for Canada) for the protection of migratory birds. Later amendments implemented treaties between the U.S. and Mexico, the U.S. and Japan, and the U.S. and the Soviet Union (now Russia).
Would you be able to guess which migratory bird is British and which one is American without the title?

The Humble Mourning Dove

As imperceptively as Grief
The Summer lapsed away -
Too imperceptible at last
To seem like Perfidy -
A Quietness distilled
As Twilight long begun,
Or Nature spending with herself
Sequestered Afternoon -
The Dark drew earlier in -
The Morning foreign shone -
A courteous, yet harrowing Grace,
As Guest, that would be gone -
And thus, without a Wing
Or service of a Keel
Our Summer made her light escape
Into the Beautiful

- With the advent of pollution and destruction of natural habitats, migratory birds are finding it difficult to trace their habitats. Hope they all live happily in this lonely planet, a great lens on migratory birds.

- Beautiful! Yes, we miss the birds when they migrate but I do love to watch (and hear!) the geese flying overhead when they leave for a warmer climate.

- I do love watching the birds come back each year and I always hate to see them leave. My heart breaks for the migrating birds affected by the light shows. Poor babies! Love the posters you selected. Most Excellent!
