Poker Pro Mike Matusow
During his time as a poker dealer, Mike learned every detail of the game, studied players, and took mental notes of everything he witnessed. Finally, he entered a small poker tournament and won it, prompting him to play more tournaments, build his bankroll, and enter the cash game scene. Local players quickly realized that he was a skillful player, especially in hold'em and Omaha variations. He also became known as a vocal, emotional player - engaging in banter at the tables and never failing to make friends and enemies at the same time.
Mike won his first major tournament at the World Series of Poker in 1999, taking home a bracelet in the $3500 no-limit hold'em event. Several years later, in 2002, he took his second bracelet in the $5000 Omaha hi-lo split tournament, leaving no doubt about his poker skills. And he has become a familiar face on the World Poker Tour with two final tables - one in the third season at the Aruba Poker Classic where he finished third, and the other in the fourth season on the famed Bad Boys of Poker II event as the runner-up. Most recently, in 2005, he won the WSOP Tournament of Champions for $1 million, and he can be seen (and heard) at any casino hosting a major tournament. While he still struggles to keep his emotions and personal life in check, Mike is much respected and liked by the poker community, and his wins at the poker table keep adding up.
Mike Matusow at a Glance
Michael B. Matusow (born April 30, 1968 in Los Angeles, California) is an American professional poker player, residing in Henderson, Nevada. Matusow's nickname of "The Mouth" reflects his reputation for trash-talking at the poker table. He is also known for sometimes ruining hours or days of good play with a single spectacular misjudgment, (known as a "Mike Matusow Blow-up" or "Mike Matusow Meltdown").
Matusow began playing poker seriously in the early 1990s, first while working as a poker dealer, then as a professional player. His successes include being a three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, and the winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.
Mike "The Mouth" Matusow
In the early 1990s, Mike discovered a new arena in which to compete - poker. Mike had already discovered video poker when he began working as a dealer at a local casino. Although he loved the game, he wasn't winning much, and he used his time at the table to study the players and their techniques. Soon, his game improved and he entered a small local poker tournament, which he promptly won.Encouraged, Mike quickly became a regular in these small tournaments, winning often enough to boost both his bankroll and his confidence. With some money behind him, Mike decided to move up the ladder. He began playing in cash games around town, specializing in Omaha 8/Better, where he quickly excelled. Even to this day, Mike is widely considered to be one of the best Omaha 8/Better players in the world.
Mike is continually working on his game and remains one of the most successful - and out-spoken - players at any table he joins.
Matusow is both widely reviled and loved in the poker world, depending on whom you speak to. Some find his loud-mouthed antics and blow-ups hilarious and endearing, while others actually refuse to engage him in casual conversation at or away from the poker table.
His knack for causing mischief in the poker world matches his once chaotic private life, which has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Matusow has battled drug problems and depression and even spent six months in jail on drug charges following the broadcast of the 2004 WSOP Main Event on ESPN. He's worked on getting his life straightened out and has been clean for more than two years now.
And his life isn't the only thing he's been working on. Despite being considered the best Omaha poker player in the world and one of the best Texas Hold'em players, Matusow continues to improve on his extensive and skillful poker game, and remains one of the most successful - and outspoken - players at any table he joins.
