- Macabi Skirt
- I used to hike wearing trail pants that converted to shorts by unzipping the bottoms. This conversion involved stopping, removing my boots, then unzipping the bottom portion of the pants above the knees, putting the boots back on and stashing the unzipped pant legs in my backpack. I thought, There's got to be a better way.
Then, visiting the website of Sisters on the Fly, I discovered Macabi Skirts. These skirts are a design marvel. It's easy to convert them from a skirt to pants to shorts of various lengths. A pant clip hangs at the end of an adjustable thin strap, which runs down from the waist in the middle of the skirt. It clips quickly to a hook on the inside back of the skirt. Using the strap, it's possible to adjust the length in just seconds! Converting to shorts is just one more step. On the inside of each side of the skirt are snap straps that attach at the bottom of the pockets. Again, it takes seconds to adjust. Unlike the zippered convertible pants I used to wear, there's nothing to store when switching modes in this skirt.
The supplex fabric is lightweight and soft. It resists wrinkles and dries quickly. There's a comfortable elastic waistband with a drawstring, and belt loops. One of my favorite features is the oversize cargo pockets on each side of the skirt. It's possible to stuff them without looking bulky. On the right side there is deep pocket that includes a zippered security pocket that easily fits a passport, thin wallet, and keys. The large left side pocket has an inner pocket that's just right for a phone, iPod or slim camera.
Two of these skirts are the foundation of my travel wardrobe. In the summer the cool fabric and loose fit combine for outstanding comfort. I wear the skirts so often that I bought long underwear bottoms, so that I can continue to wear them during the Colorado winter!

Manufactured by and available from Macabi Skirt LLC - Adobe Lightroom
- Adobe Lightroom is an imaging software that's excellent for keeping track of large numbers of photos, and also provides an extensive range of processing and manipulation functions. I'm working on version 2.3 as I write this; the 3.0 beta was just released. The program's broken into five intuitively designed modules: Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print, Web.
Making web galleries is ridiculously easy, and printing is much more intuitive in Lightroom than Photoshop (at least CS2, my current version). Now that there are graduated filters and advanced cloning/spot removal in Lightroom, I only do really serious retouching in Photoshop. I'm not sure if it's as useful for processing jpegs as it is RAW files (I don't shoot jpegs), but the RAW converter is comprehensive and a pleasure to use. The keywording and metadata functions are great for retrieval, and you also have the option of duplicating everything you import from your CF/SD cards onto a second drive for instant backup. It also converts RAW files directly to DNG (best for long-term storage) upon import, if you choose.
Lightroom's one of my all-time favorite pieces of software. I don't enjoy the pixel pushing aspect of photography a fraction as much as I enjoy taking pictures, but it's less painful with Lightroom. I haven't used its main competitor, Aperture, but have been told by friends who've used both that Aperture doesn't offer image manipulation capabilities on par with Lightroom.

Made by Adobe - Kiwi Knives
- As I got more serious about cooking, I splurged and bought myself a very nice Kai Shun santoku - like the Tosagata Hocho, previously reviewed on Cool Tools. I used its preternaturally sharp edge with joyous dispatch for about 6 months, until I woefully cut some citrus with it and left it dirty overnight, eroding that wonderful edge. I've never been able to get that magic edge back, even with pro sharpening.
On a visit to a local Asian market, I found a series of Thai-made Kiwi brand knives. In the store, they were nearly free: The large tapered chef's knife (model #21) that soon stole my heart cost around $4, and the paring knife was $1.50.
These knives are very sharp and schuss through veggies and meats like it's nothing. Don't go hacking at bones with the thinner models, but Kiwi also makes quite usable cleavers (for around $8). The miraculous part is, the knives hold an incredible edge for months with proper use of your steel, and they take a new edge with aplomb after a few strokes on a stone.
I have owned knives by Wusthof, Kyocera, Calphalon, and Ikea (shudder) and the Kiwis are the most consistently sharp, most durable, and have the most effective shapes. I've bought or suggested them for all of my foodie friends, and people can't get over how wonderful they are. They don't look like much, but they're well-balanced, very sharp. It doesn't hurt that I could have picked up a full set for less than my crappy block-o-food-manglers cost 10 years ago.
As far as longevity goes, I've had my main chef's knife for about four years, have steeled it every time I used it and given it a few good hones on my Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's still wicked sharp, and while I haven't babied it, it looks none the worse for wear. I used my paring knife to whack the lid off a persnickety glued-shut can of Lyle's Golden Syrup, and in my zeal, the tip bent over almost double. I thought, Oh no! but then I bent it back in place with a pair of pliers, and it's basically good as new.
They're definitely the Jeep Wranglers of the kitchen. I suggest buying them locally if you live in an area with Asian markets; if not, they can be picked up online at generally higher prices.

Available from The Wok Shop - SilverTool
- Here's a tool I wish existed about 25 years ago. Silver Trucks makes this updated version of the classic skate key, with added functionality, so it works in a complete skateboard build-up and isn't limited (as its predecessor was) to maintenance and adjustments. The SilverTool is a solid, straight, T-shaped tube that feels much better in my hand than other tools I've used and has more features than anything else out there on the market.
Like the old skate key tool that was the standard for years, the SilverTool has openings to adjust the nuts for the wheels, as well as adjusting the nut tensioning on the truck kingpin. What is revolutionary about this tool is that it has a reversible ratchet at one end and a removable Phillips/hex driver. These features allow me to install and adjust the hardware holding the trucks to my deck. (Rush makes a ratcheting skate tool that has a hinged ratchet socket, and a hinged pullout Phillips/hex driver. Rush's tool is smaller than Silver's, but I believe some stability/torque is sacrificed in exchange.)
The SilverTool is also equipped with a medium-grade file for smoothing out the griptape edges around the skateboard deck. This is a nice bonus, though it's not quite enough for me to perform a complete setup. I still need to use a separate razor blade or Stanley knife to trim away excess tape.
I hope to purchase, or make, adaptors for the ratchet that will allow me to use this tool for basic bicycle maintenance as well. If Silver were to think a little beyond just skateboarding, they could easily manufacture the tool of choice for those who are into both skateboarding and riding bikes.

Manufactured by Silver Truck Co - Rigid Shop Vac
- I purchased this shop vac after multiple online reviews recommended this model. The feature that stands out the most for me is its Scroll Noise Reduction, which I find is actually effective. Most vacuums are extremely loud, but with this one it's possible to have a conversation while it's running.
I initially sought out this shop vac after renovations left our house coated with a layer of dust. We used the Rigid vac to clean up drywall dust, sheetrock dust, sawdust and other debris. Later we confirmed its wet application utility when a pipe burst in the bathroom. When not being used elsewhere our vac sits attached to saws in the garage, keeping the space clean. The whole unit is light enough (22 lb.) and easy to carry around. It uses a three-layer replaceable air filter, and though it's not included, there is an option of a HEPA replacement filter.
While the 2-gallon Singer wet/dry vac previously reviewed on Cool Tools seems useful for smaller clean-ups, this 14-gallon Rigid has been well worth its purchase price.

Manufactured by Rigid - Brooks Saddles
- We have three points of contact while riding a bicycle: pedals, handlebar grips, saddle. As anyone who's been uncomfortable on a ride knows well, the latter's by far the most significant in terms of comfort. Saddle choice is as personal as musical preferences; the only way to know if a saddle works for you is to plant your butt on it and take a spin. One general design, however, made by an English company since the late nineteenth century, has proven itself a tried and true favorite.
Brooks leather saddles come in configurations for nearly every type of rider and every mode of riding. Among the choices for leisurely upright cafe bikes is the B67 model, which I use on my utility/errand bike. It's the most comfortable saddle I've ever owned. I'm obsessive about bike fit (bike fit is more important than bike quality), and there isn't a component I've used that makes my bike fit me better than my Brooks saddle. Brooks' B15 model has been around since 1937, and is best suited to a racer hunched over in the drops. Other options include women's models, and wider models with bigger springs.
Like baseball gloves, Brooks saddles require a break-in period, though under you instead of your mattress. After a couple of months mine became noticeably more contoured to my contours. It's felt custom-made ever since. Also like baseball gloves, bike saddles should be chosen for your size and position (on the bike). A wider platform is better suited to an upright riding position/wider body; narrower is better for racing-oriented cyclists/narrower bodies.
Leather saddles don't tolerate wet weather as well as modern synthetic models. They're also heavier and more expensive, too expensive for me to have a Brooks on all of my bikes, though I would.

Manufactured by Brooks England - 4Sevens Quark
- LED flashlights are still evolving, but the best model powered by a single AA battery is currently the 4Sevens' Quark. Its nearest competitor, the Fenix LD10, is a fine flashlight, but it's not that much of an improvement over the L1D-CE that I reviewed a couple of years ago on Cool Tools. The original Fenix L1D-CE used a then-revolutionary LED emitter, the Cree XR-E, but since then several flashlights use even newer and more efficient LED emitters from Cree -- including the 4Sevens Quark.
The Quark, as with Fenix, has the ability to use the same interchangeable head for three different battery configurations: a single AA battery body, or two AAs, or a single CR123 lithium body. And though the Fenix LD10 has a higher max output from a single AA than the 4Sevens Quark, the Quarks show better efficiency-brightness when used in the 2x AA or 1x CR123 configurations.
The Quarks also have a self-centering design for their emitters, so their beams are really close to flawless. Compared side-by-side with the Fenix beams (which are still pretty good) the difference is pretty obvious.
The maximum output of the Quark with a single regular alkaline AA battery is now an astounding 109 lumens. This is brighter than the once-monster Xeon SureFire 9P rated at 105 lumens with three CR123 Lithium batteries!
Although the Quark's max output with a single AA is indeed very bright it is sometimes too bright -- imagine trying to read with 109 lumens a few inches away. That's why almost all of the better flashlights have lower light levels; and most users tend to use these lower levels far more than the maximum. The Quark AA goes one step better by providing a very low Moon mode level of 0.2 lumens (compared with the LD10's 9 lumens low setting), which helps preserve one's dark vision adaption for those close hand-held tasks.

Manufactured by and available from 4Sevens - Mary Moppins
- I previously used a basic cotton deck mop, which is the best of the conventional choices, as far as I'm concerned. Most of the grocery store alternatives to the cotton deck mop are flimsy and don't work very well. This mop is superior to others in several respects. First is that it is solid and sturdy. It is a real tool rather than a flimsy piece of junk. Second is that it works so much better. It takes less water and cleaner and less effort but picks up dirt better and faster. I use mine with vinegar and water or other environmentally preferable cleaning solutions. Third is that you don't have the problem of storing a wet, dirty mop.
This mop is basically a cylinder at its base, with Velcro-like hook fasteners that hold onto a typical terry cloth towel. The towel or rag you use comes off the mop head when you are done and goes into the wash. Nothing hangs around wet in your cleaning closet getting funky. It's similar in design to the Cuban Mop previously reviewed on Cool Tools, but with a better means of keeping the towel on the mop head.

Manufactured by and available from Mary Moppins - Eskimold
- This is loads of fun, and a way to get the kids out of the house during the winter. It's also a way to make a cheap two- or three-person ice fishing house that doesn't require transport at the end of the season. Any type of snow can be compacted into this nifty device, which will create, quickly, hundreds of perfectly formed, slanted, and stacking igloo building blocks. The Eskimold is different from other snow block kits in that one block edge is concave, the other is convex, allowing them to fit together, almost like puzzle pieces, edge to edge. The blocks also curve in slightly (picture an igloo's interior walls). The last block on each row has to be trimmed, and a plastic snow knife is included in the kit for that purpose. It works well, since the igloo gradually leans in as it's built, and the diameter shrinks with each row. A skilled builder could mimic the traditional half-sphere igloo design, and the casual builder (or parent working with kids) will end up with a more pointed, and taller, beehive design, which one can actually stand up in. Unlike the previously reviewed Icebox, the Eskimold is oriented toward play more than serious shelter construction.
If you have a couple of kids, it works best to get two of them, to avoid fighting between the kids. These plastic buckets are durable, and will last for years. You can make the blocks in advance, if you wish, and let them freeze overnight on a scrap of plywood. It's simple, but time consuming. We spread it out over two days, with hot chocolate breaks. You do not need to haul the snow to the igloo site (it takes a lot of snow); you can use a shovel to make the blocks a distance away from the site, stack them on a piece of plywood on a sled, then haul them to your building spot. Once you make a block you need to stick it on the igloo, or on a smooth board. If you leave it on the ground, it will freeze there overnight, and you will not be able to use it.
My teenage son actually slept in his own igloo creation one night, and was comfortable in -15 degree F weather. He and a group of his friends used it to make a circular shelter, without a roof, about 15 feet in diameter, and about 5 feet tall, with our metal firepit in the center. This created a nice sheltered bonfire site in the backyard, out of the wind, where they could have adult-free discussions, with food.

- As literature, the biblical book of Genesis has it all: sex, violence, angels, war, murder, heroes, incest, world-wide disasters, spooky mystery, and a timeless story. All it needed was illustrations by the comic genius R. Crumb and you'd have a underground manga hit. And that's what this book is. Crumb brilliantly did not alter or omit any words from the scriptural text, and even toned down his drawings to a PG-13 rating. But man, is this strong drink. It will burn your eyelashes. Like it must have done 2,000 years ago. Now you have absolutely no excuse not to read the first book of the Bible.
