Who is Tails?
Tails is Sonic the Hedgehog's little sidekick, who first appeared in the Sega game "Sonic 2" in 1992. The two-tailed fox can fly by twirling his tails together.
In the game series he's usually an eight-year-old prodigy who can fix machines and fly a plane. Fortunately he's a good-natured kid who doesn't seem to let his talents go to his head. He looks up to Sonic and is a loyal sidekick.

The Story Behind Tails' Name
Yasushi Yamaguchi is credited for coming up with Tails. He named the character Miles Prower, but the Sonic Team decided the character should be called Tails instead.As a sort of compromise, Yasushi Yamaguchi made it so that Tails' legal name was Miles Prower. However, it's often implied in Sonic comics and TV shows that Tails hates his real name. Considering that Miles Prower is a pun for "miles per hour," I don't blame him.

Tails is cute in the video games, sure, but you can hug and squeeze an actual Tails plushie.
There's a slightly bigger version of this plushie, but I think this one looks much more adorable. It seems to have better detail.

Tails on the Sonic SatAM Cartoon
Although both Sonic and Tails were in the Sonic the Hedgehog Saturday morning cartoon, their world in the TV show was very different from that of the video games. Although Sonic fought against Robotnik and his robotic minions, Tails was usually kept sheltered in the village of Knothole. Everyone thinks Tails is much too young to be risking his life in dangerous missions.Tails is about ten years old in the cartoon. Unlike his video game counterpart, he's neither a pilot nor a mechanical genius. But he can fly, and he practically hero-worships Sonic.
If the series had continued, Tails probably would have become more like a sidekick to Sonic.

Is Tails a Kitsune?
Why does Tails have two tails, anyway? Many fans have theorized that Tails is actually a magical creature known as a Kitsune.According to Japanese folklore, a Kitsune is a spirit that usually appears as a fox, although they can also take on human form. Their power increases with age. The more tails they have, the older and more powerful they are.
Personally, I prefer to think of Tails as a fox with a genetic mutation.
