Review: Dallas Morning News
by Mario Tarradell
Concert review: At Dallas' American Airlines Center, Miley Cyrus shows she's moved on from Hannah Montana
Hannah Montanamight as well be history. The successful Disney Channel series has one more season to go, but Miley Cyrus has already moved on.
Her concert performance before a sold-out crowd Sunday night at American Airlines Center was a showcase for Miley Cyrus the singer, actress and entertainer, not the TV star. She clearly has much bigger endeavors in mind.
It's telling that the bulk of the material comprising her 80-minute set came from 2007's Meet Miley Cyrus, 2008's Breakout and the new EP, The Time of Our Lives. It's also notable that she showed the audience the trailer for The Last Song, her 2010 coming-of-age film, and then sang a piano ballad from the movie.
Cyrus, 16, is in that awkward teenager-to-adult phase. She's trying to figure out how to hold on to those tween and teen fans, who showed up in mass quantities at the show, while attempting to grow up artistically and personally. Nothing she did on that platform should stir up controversy, but she's not a kid anymore.
There's an ambitious twinkle in her eye. She enjoyed cavorting across the stage in hip-hugging shorts and curvy tops. Employing a seven-piece band and 10 dancers, Cyrus used seven video screens to create a symbiotic relationship between real and virtual.
"Breakout," "Start All Over," "Bottom of the Ocean" and "Fly On the Wall" all played like music videos come to life. She took to the air a couple of times, once with bungee cords and the other on a motorcycle that flew above the audience.
Cyrus is a serviceable singer. She's got lung power, but not much vocal personality. Her brand of pop-rock isn't special or novel. It just gets the job done, especially for her constituency, which thrives on energy, hooks and that's it.
The most memorable tune from the show was "Party In the U.S.A.," her current single, precisely because it employs a quasi-funk beat folded into the pop-rock formula. It felt like another step toward womanhood. Hannah Montana, who?

Miley Cyrus takes Britney's path
Anyone who becomes the most popular in something eventually figures out that once you get to the top, you usually have to work even harder to stay there. That's especially true when your primary audience is preteens and young adolescents, whose tastes can change as quickly as they grow up.
Miley Cyrus, the reigning princess of pop, came to town Saturday and demonstrated that there are several ways to sustain popularity, and one of them is by expressing your sexuality, overtly and implicitly.
Cyrus pretty much sold out the Sprint Center on Saturday, two weeks after she postponed her original date. Among the nearly 16,000 fans, half were girls 10 and younger; half of the rest were girls in the 11 to 16 range; and the rest were older adolescents and a lot of parents.
They saw a spectacle: an elaborate multi-screen video presentation, a small army of backup dancers, some aerial theatrics that included Cyrus sitting atop motorcycle a few stories above the crowd, a brief tribute to Michael Jackson, a Joan Jett cover and as many wardrobe changes as you get in a Cher concert. It didn't quite match the extravagance of the Jonas Brothers' show this summer, but it came close.
Cyrus, who will turn 17 in November, has emerged from two worlds. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was a brief country sensation in the mid-1990s, and she starred with him in the Disney sitcom "Hannah Montana." At her show here in 2007, she played both roles: Miley Cyrus and her alter-ego, Hannah Montana.
Saturday, she stuck to one super-ego: herself. She and her band performed several of her hits, like "See You Again," "7 Things," "Hoedown Throwdown" and "The Climb," from the movie "Hannah Montana." Like the Jonas Brothers', her music is pop that is crafted, smoothed and shined to a glossy, radio-ready finish. It's all catchy, and some of the newer material borders on the kind of hard pop that Kelly Clarkson produces.
Cyrus also gave her fans a peek at one of her next films by showing a short commercial trailer for "The Song," which comes out next year. Nothing like taking advantage of a captive audience.
Some of Cyrus' wardrobe was borderline salacious - low tops, super-short skirts and skin-tight shorts - all of which were exaggerated several times by some revealing, low-angle camera shots.
Her half-brother, Trace Cyrus, 20, also got into the act. He is the lead singer in Metro Station, the opening band, and despite the age of the crowd before him, he was comfortable shedding his shirt and grinding like Vince Neil in a Motley Crue video. He came out during the main event and busted some more Chippendale moves when he joined his sister on "Hovering."
It's safe to say that most of the audience had been exposed to things more risqué than what they saw Saturday.
But it's starting to look like Miley and her dad came to a fork in the road, and instead of taking a right at Hilary Duff, they decided to go the way of Britney Spears.
For their sake, let's hope they've seen the trailer to that movie.

Review: Omaha World-Herald

No 'Hannah'? No problem
Miley Cyrus was a little late to the party, but no one seemed to mind.
Packed to the rafters, more than 14,000 folks attended the makeup date for Cyrus' Omaha concert, postponed after the singer got sick.
"I'm so sorry I missed you guys the first time," Cyrus told the crowd. "I got a little sick, but I'm so happy to be back."
Wearing a cleavage-baring tank top and leather shorts, the 16-year-old singer strutted, shook and danced across the stage for an hour and a half Tuesday at Qwest Center Omaha.
She went through as many as eight costume changes, most of which showed quite a lot of leg.
The production was an odd sort of spectacle - a serious case of sensory overload featuring 10 backup dancers, a full band, two backing singers and enough flashing lights, video screens and props to induce a seizure.
It was all designed to focus more on keeping the crowd of mostly 5- to 15-year-old girls entertained and much less on showcasing Cyrus' voice or her kid-friendly pop.
When she was running around the stage (which was most of the time), Cyrus' voice wasn't at its best. Her powerful pipes really shined only during moments when she stopped moving - like when she sat down in the middle of her band during the acoustic "Four Walls."
Kids in the audience didn't care much about the singing. After Cyrus asked them to "make some noise if you know the moves to 'Hoedown Throwdown,'" they practically drowned out the song with screams.
During that song and others, the girls (and a few boys) in the crowd belted out the words and danced along to the videos playing above the stage.
The show focused on her songs as Miley Cyrus, which seems like an effort to distance the singer from her Disney Channel alter ego, Hannah Montana. Popular hits, including her current single, "Party in the USA," and older tunes such as "See You Again," populated the set.
Only a few Hannah Montana tunes made it into the mix. "The Climb," from the "Hannah" movie, appeared in the show's encore, long after "Hoedown Throwdown" popped up in the middle of the show.
She may not have worn her blonde Hannah Montana wig, but her concert still appeared fueled by the Disney machine.
The concourses at the Qwest Center were filled with Miley merchandise stands, program booths, contest entry kiosks, mobile phone fan club sign-ups and innumerable ads for Cyrus' Walmart clothing line.
There was even a Walmart-sponsored booth where fans could "get a picture with Miley," wherein the starlet was superimposed next to a fan.
To top it off, a promotional trailer for Cyrus' 2010 film, "The Last Song," was played in the middle of the concert.
The whole shebang looked poised to sell as many T-shirts, CDs, DVDs and other Miley and Hannah merchandise as possible.
It worked. Lines for the booths were long, and as parents streamed out of the arena, many carried armfuls of posters and programs while their smiling little ones left in brand-new Miley shirts.

Review: Tulsa World

Cyrus flexes music and marketing muscle
Monday night, thousands upon thousands of young girls wailed like whistling fireworks on Independence Day. Monday night's BOK Center show was all about girl power - little girl power.
And the ever-present power of marketing.
Tween superstar Miley Cyrus wasn't competing so much against her TV sitcom alter-ego Hannah Montana as much as she needed to define herself as a legitimate tour de force all her own.
Did she do it?
Well, sort of. Boy, can that girl sing. She can dance, too. She's bubbly, bright, beautiful and talented. But, unfortunately, commercialism roared with its "I can't use my inside voice" lack of subtlety in nearly every aspect of this show, from the moment parents walked hand-in-hand into the venue with their pie-eyed children.
Before the show, kids stood in line to stand in front of a green screen to get pictures taken with a faux Miley Cyrus. Mannequins posed in Wal-Mart's line of Miley Cyrus fashion ensembles. Kid-sized Miley Cyrus concert tees practically flew off tables at $35 a pop.
The 16-year-old still competed with her Disney alter ego of "Hannah Montana." She competed with the new, "Movie Star Miley" and the "Clothing Line Miley."
Metro Station opened the concert with skinny jeans, powder puff black hair, jean jackets, '80s bubble gum keyboards and breathy, angsty vocals. Its biggest reaction was when big brother - and Metro Station lead singer - Trace Cyrus talked about performing with his sibling. (It's difficult to be a tough tattooed rocker when you're opening for your kid sis. What a tough gig.)
Neither act was free from marketing's heavy hand. Metro Station's last song, "Shake It," turned into an overblown infomercial for Miley Cyrus' clothing line.
However, Miley Cyrus wrestled for attention. She flawlessly ripped through "Bottom of the Ocean" and "Fly on the Wall," with costume tweaks and changes on nearly every tune of her set. A tattered princess ballgown bounced around her hips as a hoard of dancers shuffled and kicked around her. "(Let's Get) Crazy" ran into a street-dance version of "Hoedown Throwdown."
For this crowd, it wasn't the so much the scent of beer suds and wacky smoke that filled the air as it was Watermelon Bubble Yum and cotton candy. Girls hopped and bounced and howled. They waved blinking souvenir flashlights in time as Cyrus unplugged for "These Four Walls." She smiled and giggled and waved to her fans as candles flickered on projection screens behind her. It felt like a quick glimpse into the "real" Miley. ... Or was it?
Halfway into her energetic set, Miley Cyrus lost all momentum when the show screeched to a clunky halt for - oh help us - a movie clip for a film that won't be released until next year.
It stalled the show for nearly 10 minutes as she followed with a ballad filled with movie clips projected onto a screen. It took another 20 minutes for her to regain the audience's young and short attention span.
Finally, "When I Look at You," morphed into another costume change. "Obessed" rocked into "Spotlight" and "Girls Night Out."
Cyrus finally had control of her fans again as she roared into a cover of oh-so-Joan Jett version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." Screams reached a fever pitch as she revved a cherry red Harley motorcycle as it floated above the crowd, dangling from wire.
It was a tween dance explosion through and through. Her hits were all there, including "Party in the U.S.A.," "Hovering," "Simple Song," "Start All Over," "7 Things," "Kicking and Screaming," "Breakout" and more.
There was nothing too personal, nothing that grabbed our hearts and wrung it dry. There was little of Cyrus but the commercialized pop queen, doused with Disney sheen and polished with marketing "know how."
She left the G-rating for the Disney channel and brought out her PG-13 dance moves and rump-shaking choreography for several tunes, donning multiple outfits that included motorcycle boots, Daisy duke-like shorts, a Tuxedo jacket with tails and little else, fishnet tops, beater tanks and leather.
Somehow, she danced that fine line of complete objectification and teen BFF, letting fans read into her their own hopes and dreams while never giving away too much of herself.

Miley fans treated to visual spectacle
At most concerts, a performer flying over the audience on a suspended Harley-Davidson motorcycle would be a show-stopping effect.
Yet by the time Miley Cyrus performed that feat Saturday night at the sold-out Bradley Center, it was just another impressive moment in a show that featured numerous costume changes, dancers scaling giant video screens, pyrotechnic flourishes and, of course, plenty of screams from the heavily preteen audience.
Cyrus' "Wonder World" outing is her first tour without the presence of her television and film alter ego, Hannah Montana. That doesn't mean the Disney-created pop star's show wasn't a commercial affair.
Banners throughout the arena - even signs on the floors of bathroom entrances - reminded fans of Cyrus' Wal-Mart clothing collection, and lines of parents and children stretched through the corridors, waiting for a free photograph with a likeness of the 16-year-old star and her merchandise.
Cyrus is a talented vocalist who successfully carried the 85-minute set. Musically, the fare was a mix of upbeat pop ("Let's Get Crazy"), country ("These Four Walls") and adolescent love songs ("Bottom of the Ocean"). Younger fans responded best to songs they recognized from repeated viewings of movies and music videos. During "Hoedown Throwdown," the ridiculously catchy "Party in the U.S.A." and the inspirational "The Climb," tween girls filled the aisles to perform dance routines and sing along to songs they knew by heart.
As for the show, it was a pure visual spectacle. Wearing a black leather vest and black shorts, Cyrus emerged from a plastic, faux-ice pod for the opening "Breakout" as flames burst around 10 dancers flipping and jumping across the stage.
During "Fly on the Wall," Cyrus drove a swampy go-kart down a catwalk. She stood alone on a suspended platform, singing the possessive balladry of "Obsessed," and on "Wake Up America," a platform raised her above the audience as sheets of paper rained down from the ceiling.
In fact, the only thing the show's producers seemed to forget in the tightly choreographed show was a place for Cyrus' personality. With very little between-song banter, the singer often appeared distant, focusing on the next song or costume change instead of the hundreds of homemade signs and thousands of fans cheering in the upper deck.
Cyrus' one extended conversation turned out to be another commercial spot, as she introduced a clip from her forthcoming movie, "The Last Song."
Metro Station, a Los Angeles quartet featuring Cyrus' brother, Trace, opened the show with a 35-minute set of synth-pop and emo-punk. But even its dance hit, "Shake It," was accompanied by a video touting Miley Cyrus' clothing designs.

Cyrus show full of energy, skimpy attire
Miley Cyrus is barely old enough to get a driver's license in Iowa, but on Friday night the 16-year-old commanded the attention of a sellout crowd of kids, teens and grown-ups.
Cyrus emerged before 15,000 people at Wells Fargo Arena in a barely-there outfit with short, cuffed black-leather shorts, a vest and a sliver sequined peek-a-boo tank top. Her shins, at least, were covered by black boots.
A costume change later revealed Cyrus in a tutu skirt with a hemline high enough to expose boy shorts underneath, paired with a white tank top through which you could see a black bra.
Cyrus has been criticized elsewhere for being too racy. There was the Vanity Fair photo shoot in which she wore a bed sheet and red lipstick. Then, more recently, her performance at this year's Teen Choice Awards, where she pole-danced while performing "Party in the U.S.A."
But the fans who made Friday's concert didn't seem to mind.
Oskaloosa resident Teri Gunn, 27 was in attendance with her daughter Taihannah, 11. Taihannah bopped in her chair and cheered Miley on with screams and shrieks.
"I think she's really good and down to earth," Gunn said. "She speaks her mind but is caring."
Cyrus' voice stayed strong through her 75-minute set, even though she was in perpetual motion - jumping, throwing her head, tossing her hair. She was even suspended on a harness over the audience during "Fly on the Wall," and circled the audience on a motorcycle during a cover of the song Joan Jett made famous: "I Love Rock N' Roll."
Older brother Trace Cyrus's band set the stage for the teen pop-rocker. The "Shake It" band's sound and style was a hybrid of synthpop, pop and punk. A highlight was singer and guitarist Mason Musso, whose younger brother Mitchel Musso co-stars with Miley Cyrus on "Hannah Montana." Mason Musso's voice was smooth and unique, and it blended well with the retro sounds from keyboardist Blake Healy.
Although there was no visual sign of Cyrus' alter-ego "Hannah Montana," pyrotechnics, 10 dancers and thumping beats kept glow sticks swaying and camera bulbs flashing.
Cyrus changed things up and sang "When I Look at You" from her upcoming film, "The Last Song," while scenes from the movie played on towering screens.
Even when she slowed things down for a few minutes, the audience was with her.
She closed with her ballad "It's the Climb," her single from "Hannah Montana: The Movie."
"Thank you Iowa, I love you so much," she said, descending on a platform while waving her hand in a peace sign.

Teen sensation shows she's moving forward
For most young women, declaring one's entrance into her late teens involves a subtle series of steps: a new hairstyle, shorter hemlines, an older, mildly edgy boyfriend.
Miley Cyrus has done all that.Yet the Tennessee-born performer, who will turn 17 next month, recently tried something far more dramatic: distancing herself from the wholesome, blonde-wigged Hannah Montana alter-ego - a lovably goofy character that turned the daughter of a 1990s country star into a multimillion-dollar Disney icon.
Last night, when a brunette Cyrus (not one mention of Hannah) performed in Nationwide Arena, it was clear the teen queen was making an attempt to grow up and move on. In what direction, though, was unclear. The singer chugged through an 18-song, 90-minute set that ranged from hard rock and country-crossover to the fizzy teen pop that first made the singer a tween-approved sensation.
Opening the show with no lack of symbolic subtlety, Cyrus broke free from a neon-lit igloo to perform the new-wave-influenced Breakout. The Alanis-style Kicking and Screaming found the singer writhing about in black leather boots with mature moves more suited to a Pussycat Doll.
She sat at a grand piano for part of her When I Look at You ballad while footage from her upcoming film - the Nicholas Sparks-penned The Last Song - conveniently played on giant screens (banners, meanwhile, reminded patrons of Cyrus' new clothing line at Wal-Mart).
A flying harness took center stage in several songs, including Fly on theWall and a cover of Joan Jett's I Love Rock and Roll, which found Cyrus circling the floor seats on a suspended motorcycle.
Music and dance breaks were sprinkled throughout, allowing for plenty of outfit changes - and opportunities to dramatically rise from beneath the stage and disappear into it.
The elaborate concert mimicked the behavior of any teen girl rifling through her wardrobe.
Not surprisingly, a wig could have worn well with what worked best. Songs from this summer's Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack (Let's Get Crazy, Hoedown Throwdown) and older fare such as 7 Things and Start All Over had hands clapping and glowsticks flailing.
Strangely, though, a brief nod to Michael Jackson's Thriller elicited some of the night's biggest cheers.
But the show's most rewarding moments came when Cyrus chipped away the glitzy Vegas-style veneer and backup dancers to simply become a regular girl, just like the thousands who had come to see her.
A low-key acoustic performance of Four Walls backed by cello and mandolin was genuinely pure, as was a solo, couture-free performance of The Climb.

More mature Cyrus still knows how to have fun
This was no Hannah Montana concert.
The blond wig that magically transforms Miley Cyrus' character into a superstar on her hit TV show was nowhere to be found Tuesday during Cyrus' sold-out concert at The Palace of Auburn Hills. For one, she didn't need it, as Miley has become a star in her own right since packing arenas on her hysteria-inducing Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus "Best of Both Worlds" tour, which played The Palace in December 2007.
Also, she's making the point that she's not Hannah Montana anymore. This was a more grown-up Miley, one who still played to the kiddies but who made plainly clear is no kid herself, donning a series of revealing outfits that accentuated her cleavage and may have a had a few parents in the audience temporarily covering their daughters' eyes.
For the most part it was harmless fun, showcasing an artist caught in the not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman phase of not only her career but her life. But being that Miley is still just 16 years old (she turns 17 next month), Tuesday's concert may have raised a few eyebrows from parents in the crowd who might not have known they were in for a concert that occasionally veered, ever so gently, into PG-13 territory.
The 19-song, 83-minute concert focused on Cyrus' solo career, pulling mostly from last year's "Breakout" album and also showcasing 2007's "Meet Miley Cyrus," this year's "Hannah Montana" movie soundtrack and the recent EP "The Time of Our Lives." None of the early "Hannah" material was touched.
Tuesday marked Cyrus' first concert back after canceling a handful of dates due to a bout with strep throat, and there were times when her voice sounded scratchy. To her credit, she sang the entire show, and didn't rely on the backing tracks so many of her peers employ. She was best during the speedy, rock-edged numbers, blasting through "Breakout," "Start All Over," "7 Things" and "Kicking and Screaming" in succession at the opening of the concert.
But during more vocally demanding songs like "When I Look at You" and "Obsessed," her weakness showed, as she shrieked the songs' lyrics and traded volume and shoutiness over emotion. And it wasn't just the strep that could be blamed.
At this point in her career, her performance chops trump her vocal capabilities. The show was full of modern arena spectacle, as Cyrus rode high above the crowd on platforms and sailed out over the audience not once but twice (during "Fly on the Wall" and a cover of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll"). She went through a series of costumes, from junior biker chick to tattered, Avril-like riot grrrl to what looked like Aquamarine going to the prom, and the stage acted as everything from a classroom to a swamp to, most confusingly, a traffic scene.
Cyrus worked the stage throughout, doubling over while singing, dramatically falling to the ground and stepping through her choreography, while she was joined on stage by a five-piece band, two backup singers and up to 10 dancers. The show was fast-paced, gunning through songs in rapid fire succession, though the show crassly paused to show a trailer for Cyrus' "The Last Song," a movie she has due out next year.
Cyrus is still at the top of the Disney heap and proved on Tuesday she can carry an arena show full of glitz and pyro. But whether she can scale it down and connect with fans on a more intimate level remains to be seen and will likely be the key to a lasting career.

Sickly Cyrus still entertains
It took a while for the audience to realize something wasn't right during the third song of Miley Cyrus' concert at the EnergySolutions Arena Tuesday night.
The song, "7 Things" started OK, but Cyrus walked off the stage and one of the backup singers took over the lead vocals. Even the musicians looked around in confusion.
When the tune ended, Cyrus' stage manger announced the band would take a short break because Cyrus had a touch of the flu.
That was the only real glitch of the night, because Cyrus, after that short break, resumed her set with "Bottom of the Ocean." And, with a few adjustments to the set list, completed her show and gave the audience an eyeful of visual presentations and flashy choreography.
The teen idol left "Kicking and Screaming" and "Wake Up America" out of the song lineup, but performed the other songs, which included "Breakout," "Start All Over," "Obsessed," "Spotlight," "G.N.O." and "Party in the USA."
She even gave a little nod to the late Michael Jackson with a "Thriller" dance interlude that segued into "Let's Get Crazy."
The big stage effects came during "Fly on the Wall," where two of her dancers climbed video-screen walls, and a cover of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock N' Roll," where Cyrus mounted a motorcycle that was lifted over the crowd with stage cables.
There was also an acoustic set where the band gathered at the tip of the center stage-extension and performed "These Four Walls."
Cyrus, looking a bit tentative throughout the show, didn't seem to mind when her voice went flat. And neither did the fans.
In fact, they helped her out during "Hoedown Throwdown." Most of the audience, even the parents, participated in the country line dance that highlighted the song.
Cyrus also took advantage of the captive audience and showed the trailer to her new movie, "The Last Song" before emerging at a grand piano to play "When I Look at You," the signature love song from that movie.
Opening the concert was the Los Angeles band Metro Station. The four-man band, fronted by Cyrus' older brother Trace, plowed through a set that included the rock, pop 'n' roll hits "Kelsey," "Shake It" and "Seventeen Forever."
The guitar-slinging, long-haired, tattooed Trace Cyrus got the audience pumped and ready for his sister.
If there was any worries that Miley Cyrus would become another Britney Spears train wreck, those worries were quelled during Tuesday night's show.
She kept the show family-friendly and, although obviously sick, looked like she had a good time.

Miley Cyrus gives energetic performance
Miley Cyrus broke away from her alter ego Hannah Montana and put on an energetic 19-song set Friday night at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
With the exception of "Spotlight" and "Let's Get Crazy," you couldn't find Hannah Montana on stage. No blonde wigs. Few overly choreographed or colorful group dances. More sexy moves and revealing clothing. More black - as in short shorts, skirts and tank tops.
The 16-year-old pop diva kicked off her show off with "Breakout" by breaking out of an ice glacier. Wearing a tight leather tank top and short shorts, Cyrus sizzled against the fiery backdrop. She showed that she had grown up since her highly popular Best of Both Worlds Tour in 2007, where she opened as Hannah Montana and danced to Kenny Ortega-choreographed "nice girl" moves. Ortega is best known for directing Disney's "High School Musical" franchise.
Strutting and squatting in PG-13 fashion across the I-shaped stage, Cyrus quickly moved into popular songs "Start All Over," "7 Things" and, from her new EP, "Kicking and Screaming."
A guitar duel gave Cyrus time to change into a long flowing gray robe to sing a mellow "Bottom of the Ocean," where after falling into the stage, she appeared on the video screen under water. The concert picked up pace again with "Fly on the Wall." Taking a Peter Pan leap into the air with the help of some wires, Cyrus looked a little like "Sex and the City" character Carrie Bradshaw, her outfit resembling the "naked dress," just with more frill and a black bra peeking out.
With a few pyrotechnics to give it some flash, the highly anticipated tour didn't disappoint die-hard fans. And she has plenty, from toddlers to grandmas.
During fan favorite "Hoedown Throwdown," a Miley song from "Hannah Montana: The Movie," she shouted "I want to see all of you guys out of your seats and doing this with us."
It was primarily a girls' night out. There were some dads, but they didn't seem as into the show. A few refused to get up and dance, as if terrified to be seen enjoying the concert.
Cyrus shared her green message, which didn't come off as preachy, via the song "Wake Up America." "All it takes is one person with a dream and you guys can do that; you can change the world," she told the capacity crowd. Video screens then began showing traffic and pollution. As the song progressed, the screens shifted focus to gorgeous nature scenes - from mountains to deserts - showing what we can save by taking action.
She also aptly covered Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" -- which fits her vocal range - as she circled the audience, suspended overhead in a red motorcycle. Fortunately, she didn't attempt the cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," which is on her "Breakout" album. But she did give homage to Michael Jackson, with a quick "Thriller" dance and shout-out in her "Party in the U.S.A." performance.
Fans also got a sneak peek at her upcoming movie, "The Last Song." Before rolling the clip, she revealed she learned a lot about herself on the set over the summer.
Cyrus ended with a two-song encore of big hits - "See You Again" and "The Climb."
Metro Station opened with a nine-song set, including hit "Shake It." Other crowd pleasers included "Seventeen Forever" and "Kelsey."
The energetic electro-rock group, popular with teens, formed in 2006 thanks in part to Hannah Montana. Band members include Trace Cyrus, Miley's half brother, and Mason Musso, older brother of Miley co-star Mitchel Musso.

Metro Station and Miley & The Rockits Plays Staples Center
First, oh discriminating HuffPost readers, please bring half an open mind to this review, okay? Second, did you know Billy Ray Cyrus has a musically talented son, Trace, and he's one of the two front men for the power-pop group Metro Station? It's all true. These hyper-pop-rockers played the Staples Center Tuesday night and pretty much set the tone for the act that followed...Miley somebody. Now, granted, they played in front of the largest, youngest audience probably ever, but those thousands of little eyeballs were hypnotized by tattoo-boy Trace Cyrus and his best friend and main guitarist, the headbanded and be-sunglassed Mason Musso, as they really did rock for a full 41 and change minutes.
During that time--normally reserved for rudeness to the opening act--Trace and Mason had full control of their screaming pre-pubescent minions, and they, along with synthist Blake Healy and drummist Anthony Improgo, supplied many faux-U2 and Clash hooks to the surprisingly receptive youngsters. Watching Cyrus and Musso cheerlead the sold out arena was impressive since they didn't have the following act's technologies with which to mesmerize, but there was a lot of onstage (and offstage) jumping, electric guitar flingings, nymph-y choreography (uh, dudes, these are little girls, come on), and a not so spontaneous shirt striptease (hey, remember the South Park episode on Disney and The Jonas Brothers?).
Musically, they chugged out infectious, punky anthems such as "California," "Tell Me What To Do," and "Kelsey" so expertly, it seemed to have all the challenge of texting; and the best compliment would be that, playing live, the boys are as good as or, occasionally, better than their studio recordings. On the other hand, "Seventeen Forever" seemed to miss the cool dynamics and textures of the recording; but on the other, other hand, the band's performance against a back-screened video of the track was a nice moment. Their new song "Japanese Girl" was sufficiently seventies and Cure-like (on speed), and their wacky "Shake It" was a cute aerobic closer. However, whatever song has the raunchy "Take It Off, Let's Just Touch" suggestion, well, I dare them to sing it to my six-year-old daughter. But this creepy faux pas probably occurred because Metro Station should be enjoying a slightly older, more rock-appreciative audience, not just little kids.
Now. About Ruby & The Rockits. David Cassidy, his brother Patrick, and their brother Shaun...what? Oh, right, Miley Cyrus. Mostly famous for being the sister of Trace Cyrus of Metro Station, Miley Cyrus always was bound to someday make something of herself with some hard work, a little luck, and about two hundred million Disney dollars. From the technological perspective, this was an amazing show to witness, sophisticated enough for parents as well as their rambunctious preteens. And there were moments of brilliance, like when Miley's song "Fly On The Wall"--complete with an audience flyover by the young lady--concluded with a mini-Thriller tribute that included Vincent Price's macabre laugh track. The sets and Broadway-style choreography were the absolute best that money could buy, with themes ranging from futuristic to apocalyptic, and effects covering colorful pyrotechnics and indoor fireworks. Nothing sucked here.

Miley Cyrus leaves Hannah behind
They sure grow up quick, don't they?
Less than two years ago, Miley Cyrus appeared at the Oracle Arena in Oakland and played the part of her Disney Channel alter-ego Hannah Montana. She smiled as she bounced about the stage, singing happy tunes that delighted pigtailed little girls and comforted their minivan-driving chauffeurs (aka, parents).
In that role, Miley (the daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus) wasn't threatening in the slightest. Her function seemed simply to provide a much-needed stepping stone between Raffi, the Wiggles and other children's music favorites to young-teen idols such as Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears.
Now, however, little Miss Cyrus wants to join that latter group.
On her current "Wonder World Tour" _ the first not to advertise the Hannah Montana name _ the 16-year-old brunette has tossed aside her Disney character's blonde wig, as well as most of her teeny-bopper charm, in order to further establish her own star. Compared to what we've seen in the past - including the 2007-08 "Best of Both Worlds Tour," which was billed to both Montana and Cyrus - this trek is a decidedly more mature affair.
The result, at least at the gate, has been more of the same for Cyrus. She drew a capacity crowd of screaming young girls and earplug-wearing parents to the Oracle Arena on Friday night. A similar scene awaits the pop princess when she performs Sunday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Artistically speaking, however, it was more of a mixed bag. She tried mighty hard to prove that she's all grown up - wearing racy outfits while she worked the microphone like a graduate of Rock Star 101 - and some of her efforts were convincing. At other times, she came across like a run-of-the-mill plastic pop star, which is something that even detractors wouldn't have called Hannah Montana.
Admittedly, Cyrus is in a tough spot - the human embodiment of the Britney Spears' song "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." Her fans are rooting for her to succeed, and go from Disney Radio staple to the regular pop charts, but, more than anything else, they still want her to be Hannah.
To her credit, Cyrus is consciously trying to make the transition as easy as possible on fans. She's paying attention to the little things and taking baby steps. The star's performance, while not exactly Disney friendly, isn't all that daring in comparison to what else exists in the market place. For example, she got a bit friendly with the male members of her band, but there was no groping, bumping or grinding to be seen. That, presumably, will come with the next tour.
The 90-minute show opened with the raucous single "Breakout," the title track from Cyrus' 2008 sophomore outing, and it continued at a breakneck pace through "Start All Over," "7 Things" and "Kicking and Screaming." She scratched and clawed through these numbers, channeling her inner Alanis Morissette at the best of times, before slowing things down with the ballad "Bottom of the Ocean."
The visuals were dramatic, if too obvious, as the big overhead screens displayed such things as bubbles rising through water ("Bottom of the Ocean"), a frog catching a fly ("Fly on the Wall"), etc. These were the same screens that would show a lengthy preview of Cyrus' forthcoming film, "The Last Song," a smart marketing move that Hannah Montana would certainly sign off on.
The 19-song set list was primarily drawn from the two studio albums credited to Miley Cyrus. It also included one cover (Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll), a snippet of another (Michael Jackson's "Thriller") and, just to make things more confusing, four numbers off the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack.
Care to guess what songs the fans liked best? Without a doubt, the "Hannah Montana" material _ especially the fun "Let's Get Crazy" and the tender closer "Climb" _ drew the biggest responses.
That's to be expected - huge transitions like the one Cyrus is trying to pull off can't be accomplished without a few growing pains. We definitely saw and heard some on Friday night, but not enough to make us think that Cyrus won't someday be able to achieve her end goal.

Miley Cyrus rocks the Rose Garden as she kicks off tour in Portland
America's reigning teen queen Miley Cyrus kicked off her 43-city concert tour to a packed house at the Rose Garden on Monday night. With Portland as the first stop on her much anticipated second tour as Miley, the 2009 "Wonder World Tour," proves that "Hannah Montana" will soon be a distant memory and that Miley intends to rule.
A huge crystal-like ice dome emerged from the bottom of the stage to reveal the trapped pop princess trying to break out of her cocoon, thus her opening number, "Breakout," brought screaming tweens to their feet as she hit the stage ready to party. Wearing her trademark black boots, skimpy black shorts and tank top, she was draped in a white fur-like vest that rounded out her rock star ensemble.
Familiar songs from her "Breakout" album -- "7 Things," and "Wake Up America" -- showed what a powerhouse she can be using her voice and influence to get her message out. Huge screen videos surrounded the stage to give the crowd a close-up look and to add video images that rounded out the entertainment.
Miley and her dancers turned up the volume when she donned a harness and went airborne during her "Fly On The Wall" number. Dancers scaled imaginary walls while Miley literally flew above the crowd belting out her wish to have the inside scoop.
Concert goers were treated to a special sneak preview of her new movie, "The Last Song," which is based upon a Nicholas Sparks novel. The film, due out early next year, stars Miley and includes her original songs. The film clips were followed with Miley introducing some of those songs.
Emerging again from center stage seated at a white piano, Miley showcased her many talents and proved she really just beginning to grasp her star power.
One of the highlights of the concert was her rocking rendition of the Joan Jet classic "I Love Rock & Roll." Miley, dressed in black leather short shorts, boots and not much more, straddled a bright red Harley Davidson motorcycle and was again airborne, circling the crowd as belted out the tune.
Rounding out the concert were a couple of new favorites; "The Hoedown Showdown" and her recent summer hit, "Party in the USA." The backup dancers were first-rate, adding hip-hop style and energy to just about every number.
The final song was really a moment to remember -- Miley's soulful and touching rendition of "The Climb," the hit song from her Hannah Montana movie.
Miley and her opening act, Metro Station, will head to Tacoma for a Wednesday night concert, then on to California for four concerts followed by 39 more before the U.S. tour wraps up in early December
