Padre Cole Maynard: Baptist Minister

I joined the Royal Army Chaplain's Department in 1997.... As I explored the issue and took advice from serving Chaplain's I grew excited at the prospect of working very closely alongside service people in whatever theatre of operations they found themselves. It was the incarnational nature of that role that drew my initial interest and the fact that my time would be less taken up with building maintenance and church administration! Instead the focus would be on making the gospel relevant to a much younger and challenging crowd of people!

This has certainly been the case in my eight years of military ministry. Following my commissioning I was first posted to Germany and to an Armoured Infantry unit. Exercises took to me to Poland twice and to Canada where I developed the skills of ministering within the military. Wearing the uniform means that you identify with your congregation and it makes it easier for your unit to accept you as their 'Padre.'

This is further enhanced by your wearing certain badges and markings that pertain to the unit with whom you serve. As you cut about the regiment you soon become well known and conversational opportunities abound. Then when life goes pear shaped, soldiers seek you out as someone they can unburden too and seek advice from. The relational bond develops with unit exercises as your ties with the unit and individuals grow through shared experience. One moment you will be taking a field service to 120 soldiers under 'cam-nets' trying to relate the gospel in a simple and punchy manner, the next you could be listening to the marital problems of a young father sitting in the rear of a Warrior Armoured vehicle; then you could be whisked away by helicopter to another part of the Training Area to conduct a Remembrance Service for a soldier who died there the year before....

About Areopagus

Thanks for stopping by! My wife and I moved to the UK (from Florida) about four years ago. Our friends here think we're crazy for doing that, but we love the people and the culture of Britain.
