Milk, the movie

Ranked #54,081 in Entertainment, #691,391 overall

Sean Penn is Harvey Milk

After moving to San Francisco, a middle-aged New Yorker named Harvey Milk opens a camera store on Castro St with his lover Scott Smith (James Franco) and there becomes a potent and effective Gay Rights activist. After three hard fought elections Milk eventually wins a post as City Supervisor in San Francisco in 1977 making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States.

When the city's mayor, George Moscone (Victor Garber) backs Harvey Milk's power play to terminate a rival, the slightly deranged former city supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin) takes matters into his own hands.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk stars Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, James Franco and Josh Brolin.

Harvey Milk Was America's First Openly Gay Politician

He was elected to City Supervisor in San Francisco in 1977

Harvey Milk has already been the subject of several books and an Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984), directed by Rob Epstein and produced by Richard Schmiechen, this feature film presentation is the first long format narrative to explore private aspects of the man's personal life and career.

The story is narrated by Sean Penn as Harvey Milk (first person past tense) leaving his last will and testament on a series of audio cassettes. The foreboding is present right from the beginning, and the ending will echo in the minds of the viewers for days after.

Milk was filmed on location in San Francisco. Many of Mr Milk's real-life surviving friends and former associates participated in the making of this film, several appearing on camera.

During the fight against the attempt by California State Senator John Briggs (Denis O'Hare) to ban gays from teaching in public schools, the film actually shows real TV reports and documentary material. These home movies and vintage news reports are fluidly mixed with fresh footage throughout the film to best depict the life and times of Harvey Milk.

Book and Videos about Harvey Milk and the History of Gay Rights in America

I think it's odd that the 'Pictorial History of Harvey Milk and the Story Behind the Film', is the only related title on Amazon without a picture? Oh well with a title like that I had to include it in this lens.

Sean Penn's transformation into Harvey Milk is VERY remarkable. I was also very impressed with the 1970s period recreation present in sets, costumes, cars etc and even the way the actors talk.

Movie Review: Director Clint Eastwood Stumbles with Ambitious Misfire J. EDGAR
Ironically, Black solved this problem in his Milk screenplay; that earlier film made time for Harvey Milk the Politician and Harvey Milk the Man because it limited its focus to Milk's San Francisco years. If Black made central the Lindbergh kidnapping, ...
